Meet the Tutoring Staff

The transition from high school to college marks both the evolution to legal adulthood and the beginning of focused academic study. For rising 12th graders, Upward Bound offers the Senior Seminar class.

Students will begin deeper exploration of college and careers, learn more about how colleges operate and practice good citizenship and networking. Seniors will learn about local government, job-shadow area pro-fessionals and meet UW-L administrators and other local professionals. Some will have work-study opportunities. It’s a great way to start this most important year!

Check out www.seniorseminar.net for more info!

Seniors

Chong Yang is new to UB this summer. She’s a communication/business major at UW-L with good tutoring experience and lots of on-campus organizational work.

In addition, UB’s professional staff includes:

Kate Oganowski - UB’s director. Kate has many years of experience with pre-college and college students in a variety of settings. She’ll teach a Bridge seminar this summer in addition to her myriad other duties!

Paul Krause - UB’s assistant director. Paul has decades of experience with UB and will teach the Senior Seminar class this summer.

Lisa Yang - UB’s advisor. A graduate of UW-L UB herself, Lisa will supervise in the residence hall and teach UB’s Chinese class.

PLAN TO EAT EVERY MEAL WITH UBUB must order all our meals ahead of time,so if you miss a meal without giving adequate notice, you are wasting UB’s money!

We expect every student to eat every meal with UB. But if you must miss a mealbecause of an appointment, family event, or other approved absence, you MUST let us know at least 48 hours in advance! If you miss a UB meal and don’t give us atleast 48 hours’ notice, you will be charged for the missed meal.

#2IMPORTANT UBSUMMER FACT

Page 4: UB Summer Pump Up 2013

FoOd MEAL TIMES:Breakfast: 7:30 a.m.Lunch: 12:40 p.m.Dinner: 5:00 p.m. (new time!)

MILK IS OPTIONAL AT EVERY MEAL.

To avoid waste, if you must take an item you do not want to eat and it’s whole or sealed - like a piece of fruit - you may place it on the sharing tray for someone else to consume at the meal. If servers have left overs of prepared foods (like mac & cheese or spaghetti), students may go back for seconds once everyone has gone through the line once.

If you are ill or miss a meal due to a pre-planned appointment, we will get a meal tray for you and bring it to Eagle. If you have pre-approved scheduling confl ict during meal time, we will either get you a bag meal to take with you or a meal tray you can eat when you get back to Eagle.

You may not eat someplace else unless you’ve clearedit in advance with staff. We must order meals several days in advance. If you are absent for a scheduled meal without giving us at least 48 hours notice (except for illness), we will bill YOU for the missed meal.

During summer UB you’ll get three meals Mondays through Thursdays and two meals on Fridays plus snacks on Sunday evenings and Friday afternoons. Most break-fasts will be in Eagle with lunch and dinner in Cartwright Center.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) pays us back part of the cost of our food so we must guarantee that the food we serve meets portion and nutrition requirements.

Menus will be posted in Eagle and at the meal site. You will always have at least two menu options. Most of the food on the menu is required - you have to take it. Some items are optional. The menu will note which is which.

Please follow our simple rules for meal enjoyment!

* Show up on time to eat with the group. If you’re not on time it can cause problems for everyone.

* Choose your meal and swipe your card at thecashiers station. (Remember to bring your card!)

* Pass by UB checkers who make sure you have a full USDA-approved meal. If you’re missing something, we’ll send you back through the line. Really!

Special Events* Twelfth Night, a Shakespeare comedy, performed by professionals at Winona’s Great River Shakespeare Festival. UB will attend on Wednesday, June 26. “Better a witty fool than a foolish wit!”

“Eating food is probably good for most humans.” - anon.

arts & recTuesdays and Wednesdays after dinner, UB students will be able to explore and expand their creativity. This summer, students will take

the same art class for the whole summer to have time to get in depth into the subject.

Choices will probably be: Theater Arts, Visual Arts, Yoga, and Cooking. Students will choose their arts and rec options during orientation days, June 19 - 21.

SpBThe Student Programming Board (SPB) is a group of students elected by their peers that helps UB staff with planning and carries ideas and concerns from fellow students to UB staff. In the past, the SPB has chosen the color of the UB t-shirt and planned SPIRIT WEEK activities. SPB members will serve as hosts on Visit Day and assist with the “FINE DINE/Which Fork For my Future?” dinner. Each small group will have an SPB member. It’s a great way to build your leadership skills (and your resume)! Elections for SPB will be held during orientation. If you are interested but need more information, please get in touch with Kate or Lisa!

* Little Shop of Horrors, an award-winning musical performed by UW-L’s SummerStage players - this will be an optional event on Sunday afternoon, July 7 with sign up info available after June 19.

UB special events will include:

Page 5: UB Summer Pump Up 2013

During the week you may do your laundry during your free time in the Eagle Hall

facilities at your own expense.

(Or you can take your laundry home over the weekends)

Laundry card can

tWIN cITIES !Most students will end their UB summer with an all-expense paid trip to Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, July 29-August 1. Home base will be a residence hall on the University of Minnesota campus.

College visit possibilities include U of M, Hamline, Augsburg, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Macalester, and/or UW-River Falls. Business visits may touch on health, engineering, social services, business, arts, and science careers. Plus, we’ll probably attend a festival, go to a museum, see a play or professional ball game, eat at a great ethnic restaurant, tour an historic neighborhood ... have a great time! More info about the visit will be available in late June.

NOTE: Space for the Twin Cities trip is limited. UBstaff will decide who will go based on academic effort and program participation. Trip eligibility will be discussed during orientation week.

Life at SuMmEr ub* You will be charged if you lose your UB summer ID which is your ID, ACCESS, and MEAL CARD so DON’T!!! If you lose it, we will chage you for a new one!

* UB’s Eagle Hall offi ce is open from 8:00 a.m. through 10:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Fridays and 6:00 p.m. through 10:30 p.m. Sundays. The offi ce will be staffed by UB graduates. Offi ce aides will help check items out, answer questions, take messages, and prepare for activities.

* School supplies are free - notebooks, folders, pens, paper, highlighters, fl ash drive, etc. Most will be in your room when you move in. You can get more if needed from the UB Eagle Hall offi ce, but supplies are limited!

* Recycling: UW-L recycles glass, aluminum, tin, paper, and type 1 and 2 plastic. Use the bins in the Recycle room. YOU are responsible for correctly disposing of the garbage and recyclable material you generate. DO NOT DISPOSE OF YOUR TRASH IN THE RESIDENCE HALL (lounge, offi ce, kitchen, bathroom) CONTAINERS!!!

* Transportation - You do not need a car at summer UB. If you absolutely must bring one, we will keep your keys and you must purchase a summer parking permit ($66). We recommend that you do bring a bike and good lock (and use the lock every time!)

* Stipends will be given out every Friday (and Tuesday, July 3) The fi rst Friday, June 21, students will earn $5 for the half week plus their Bonus Stipend (if earned, for summer paperwork turned in by deadline). The July 3 stipend will also be $5 for the half week. Deductions may be made for tardiness, poor participation, or other violations of the Code and/or campus policies.

* Schedule - UB’s schedule is full! Please keep track of your schedule and be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there! Otherwise, the whole group may be late or miss out on important stuff!

* Illness/Injury - UB maintains an infi rmary near the UB Eagle offi ce. If students are too ill to attend class, they may rest in the infi rmary. Minor injuries can be treated with fi rst aid supplies available in the Eagle UB offi ce. If your illness or injury requires professional attention, a UB staff person will contact your parent/guardian and accompany you to see a doctor.

* Participation & Responsibilities: The Code of Conduct you read and signed as part of your UB summer application is similar to those used by most residence halls. It will help you get ready for a successful living experience at college and help all of us get along this summer. The Code will be discussed on the fi rst night. Call us with questions, 785-8539
