President’s Letter

Summer is around the corner and The 84th Annual SWA Convention will be here soon.

The membership of SWA extends a warm and heart felt invitation for you and your family to come and join us at the Baypoint Wyndham Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida. We are excited about this new venue and this year’s convention is shaping up to be the best ever.

We are hearing from many of our members that the economy in our region is slowly starting to recover. Last year’s theme was “Success By Choice Not by

Chance”. This year our SWA theme will be The New Normal which describes the significant changes that have occurred over the past several years in the marketplace, and in the way we conduct business. At this convention you will have the best opportunity in the industry to mix education, networking, and social time with your peers in a relaxing atmosphere. Our exciting keynote speaker Nadira Hira will enlighten us about Generation Y, Best Practice sessions will stimulate ideas for improving our businesses and our Leadership Development Council will network the next generations of leaders and our vendor/wholesaler meetings will provide a great mid-year review, this year’s convention has it all.

As in the past, our convention is a family event and we encourage everyone to bring their families to Panama City for a great time. We will continue our tradition of allowing spouses and children under 18 to attend the convention as registered guests at no additional charge. We have many attendees whose families have become great friends through the years.

We look forward to seeing you and your family in Panama City in June.

Best Practices

Workshops

Sunday, June 24/ 2:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Successful growth requires companies to use "best practices." This is an opportunity for all Wholesalers, Manufacturers, and Reps to participate in some very informative discussions.

This year we will have a Manufacturer & Rep panel the first session and a Wholesaler panel the second session. We want your questions for these panels. We want your questions for each area!!!

Submit your questions to the Southern Wholesalers Facebook page or e-mail them to [email protected]. The questions we use will be from the ones you submit! Need examples to get you started?

Sales - How do you strategically plan for sales? Or

do you?

Purchasing - How involved should the purchasing

dept. employees be with the total inventory management? Cycle counts? Warrantee returns? Cost negotiations? Etc.

Marketing - What does "marketing" mean in the wholesale distribution world?

Vendor Relations - What do you expect from a vendors representative on an average call? How often are expectations met?

We are providing excellent opportunities to hear about other company's best practices. You will learn how others in the Industry have chosen to grow and succeed in their companies and the most direct and efficient pathways to success. Consider bringing your finance, sales, marketing, purchasing and operations managers as they will benefit from our discussions on Sunday. Encourage them to be involved in our network of Wholesalers, Manufacturers and Reps.

Don’t’ forget, we need your questions!!!!

Meetings Learn from your peers and develop stronger Connections in the industry

Monday, June 25/ 8:00 - 9:45 a.m.

Nadira A. Hira will explore how this generation will be shaped by

the current recession, understanding how they are critical to the future workforce, and how to turn today’s Gen Yers into the business

leaders of tomorrow. Nadira Hira speaks on how to creatively engage Generation Y as important contributors to corporate culture and productivity, on racial and generational diversity, and on the role of social networks in the modern workplace and in society in general.

Award-winning writer Hira has become an Award-Winning writer and leading voice on Generation Y, the fastest-growing segment of the American workforce, through her work as a journalist at Fortune magazine and her cultural commentary as a member of Gen Y herself.

She authored Fortune’s widely discussed 2007 cover story on Gen Yers and their impact on corporate America. Nadira’s work has also appeared in various other national publications—among them, Essence, Smithsonian, and Men’s Fitness magazines. Her media presence extends to television, where she has been a featured personality, a regular contributor and an expert guest on many major outlets.

While it may seem to some executives that, given the current economic climate, it’ll be easy to get and keep Yers, Nadira has found just the opposite: If Yers were suspicious of corporate America before, they’re completely distrustful now, having had all their fears about corporate life confirmed by the financial crisis and its fallout. And while some Yers may take a job now to pay the bills, they’re sure to be off pursuing work that’s more in line with their values—be it at a nonprofit or with an entrepreneurial venture—as soon as it’s possible. So it’s even more important than before that organizations focus on recruiting, retaining, and developing the best Gen Y talent.
