Hilltoppers Started Freedom

The associat ion between Western Kentucky basketball and Freedom Hall is about as old as Freedom Hall itself: The Hilltoppers played in the first collegiate game the structure ever hosted, downing San Francisco in the building's ··Dedication Game" December 19, 1956, 61-57,

A gala occasion it was. Larry Bieck, then a Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL w riter and later president of the U. S. Basketb.~ 11 Writers Association. called the throng of 15,133 the ·'biggest erowd ever to sce a ba~ke tba ll game south of the Mason-Dixon Line."

What that huge crowd saw set a meaningful standard for basketball played at F reedom Hall, a string of hardwood extravaganzas that has included some of the na tion's top games ever, h ighlighted by several NCAA Finals.

The lead in that fi rst game changed hands six times and the score was tied five times. Western held a 25-20 lead at halftime against a team that had a national record st ring of 60 straight victories broken only a few nights earlier.

The West Coast quin tet took the lead back early III the sC('ond half, but the HilllOppers' Owen Lawson sank a field goal to tic it at 29-all. then hit a free throw to give Western a lead it never relinquish ed.

The Hilhoppers speedy guards set the pace for the night, with Eric Back gelling 15 points and Lawson adding 13. Big 6-9 Art Day led the DOllS with 23.

It was a great start for Western in Freedom Hall. Since that time the Hilltoppers have played in the big roundhnll palace nine other times. The record over the years shows Western wilh four wins a gainst six losses.

J erry West Tallies 30

One of the most memorable games in Western's Freedom Hall history was a 72- 74 loss to West Virginia January 23, 1959.

Hall's Basketball Tradition

20 from Ralph Crosthwaite. Big Charlie Osborne joined Crosthwaite on the bo;u'ds to outrebound the Cadets, 51-28.

In December, 1960, the Hilltopper s were back in Freedom Ha ll for the Bluegrass Invita tional Tournament. Despite 20 ])Oinls from Utah State's Cornell Green (now a defensive halfback with the Dallas Cowboys). the Hi!ltoppers bumped the Aggies, 86-72, in the fiTSt round . A!l-Amer ican Bobby Rascoe led the way with 22 points, fo!lowed by Osborne with 20 and Bobby Jackson with 19.

The next night, in the finals, Louisville's Cardinals stopped the Hilltoppers for the first t ime in six games that season to win the tourney title. MVP John Turner led Louisvi!le with 25 points, while Osborne had 17, Rascoe 16 and Harry Todd 16 for Western.

Revenge Against U of L

Western bounced back later that same season to reverse the decision against Louiwi\le, 96-80. It was a blazing night for the Hilltoppcr gunners as they hit 60.4 percent of their shots from the floor- an amazing 81 per cent in the second half. Rascoe had 30 points, Osborne and J ackson 20 each.

The Hilltoppers were back in the Bluegrass Tourney again in December, 1961, but lost in the first round to St. Bonaventure, 65-66, and in the consolation game, 68-78, to Texas, Western overcame a 13-point deficit to take a late lead against eventual tourney winner St. Bonnie in the first game , but couldn 't hold on.

The HiUtoppers' late and great coach, Ed Diddle, missed the tournament as he recovered from su rgery - in a Bowling Green hospital while present Western Athletic Director Ted Hornback handled the team.

The Mountaineers' Jerry West lookood as if he were goinl( to gun down the HiHtopP€rs all by himself <IS he pumped in 18 points in the first nine minutes of play. But Western came back after trailing at halftime, 35-46,

Western's Bob Daniels (88) and Ralph Crosthwaite batt le San Franl'i sco's ru gged front line for a rebound in the firs t cOlJegi'ltc b"skct ball game played in Freedom lIall. Western siol'Pt-d the Dons, 61-57.

Western has played in Freedom Hall only twice since that time. The HilJtoppers, al ready Ohio Valley Conference champs and headed for the NCAA Tour_ nament, were upset by Louisvi lle, 71-88, March 7, 1962. It was one of the coldest nights ever for Western as it hi t only 20.7 per cent of its fie ld goals, even t hough Bobby Rascoe pumped in 27 points.

to take a 72-70 lead with less than three minutes to go.

West Virgi nia center Bob Cloussen tied it with a field goal at 2:37. Western tried for a final shot, but lost the bnn on a bad pass out fron!. The Mountaineers went to West, everybody's All_American for the winning shot, but the Cabin Creek whiz, ddensed by AI Ellison missed. However Cloussen was there to tip it in with three seconds left , giving the l'IIountaincers the win. West finished with 30 points,

l~~ter that s .. me season. the HJlItoppers returned to Freedom H all to wallop Army, 94_73, behind Ellison's 22 points and

The Hilltoppers' last Freedom Hall appearance prior to tonight was on January 30, 1963. when Louisville outscored the Western quintet 20-3 in one five-minute, second-half stretch to pin a 66-81 loss on the 'Toppers, Western AU-American Darel Carrier had 22 points in tha t one, with John Reuther's 20 leading U of L ,

All-American: JIM McDANIELS

A basketball fan gets a thrill out of watching an All-American in action. He gets an additiona l treat in watching a talented seven-footer perform. When he sees a seven-foot All-American in a top-flight game, he might think he is in "hog heaven."

Tonight's game offers fans a unique opportunity: They get to see two-COUNT 'EM .. TWO------sevenfoot All-Americans in action against each other, Western Kentucky's Jim McDaniels and J acksonville's Artis Gilmore (see page 16A).

McDaniels is one of the most talented big men to come down the pike in years. He is the type of player who would be outstanding even if he were six to eight inches shorter.

The reason? Mainly his shooting abil ity. He has hit well over 50 per cent of his field goal

attempts from the day he first put on a Western Kentucky uniform. He led the Ohio Valley Conference last year with a .570 percentage.

But, you say, it isn' t unusual for a man so big to hit a fine percentage. After all, he is so much bigger than everybody else and he spends so much time around the bucket, his shots come mostly from inside.

That's where there is a difference with "Big Mac." He is as fine a shooter, if not better than most players at the same range from which forwards and even guards must pump up their shots. While it is true that Hilltopper Coach Johnny Oldham wants McDaniels around the bucket as often as possible, it is not unu su al for Mac to float in jumpers with a feathery touch from 15, 20, or even 25 feet out.

As Coach Cal Luther of arch-rival Mu rray State put it last year, "McDaniels can move as quickly as any 6-4 man and when he can't get a shot off underneath, he simply goes outside where he's just as effective."

"Big Mac" is in the process of smashing just about every scoring and rebounding record in Western history . He compiled the best single-season scorin g average ever for any Hilltopper last season when he tallied 28.6 points per game (11th best in the nation) on his way to becoming the OVC Player of the Year.

He started the cunent season with a total of 1,360 career points in bis fi rst two seasons of varsity play. He needed only 321 more to break Clem Haskins' three-season mark of 1,680 and 717 (h e scored 716 last season ) to eclipse Ralph Crosthwaite's four-year record of 2,076 points.

McDaniels' total of :~05 field goals in 1969-70 set both Wcstern AND Ohio Valley Con fe rence record s. He has led the ave in scoring for each of his varsity campaigns, having rapped in 24.8 poiDts per g;:1ll1C as a sophomore in 1968-69.

Perhaps consistency has been McDan iels' finest all-around attribute. For example, he scored below 20 points only three times all last season, below 25 only six times.

"Big Mac" picked up valuable experience last summer as he captained the United States team in the World University Games in Turin, Italy .

He has seen a lot of the world. But befot'e he finishes his phenomenal basketball career, the world will have seen a lot of "Big Mack."

HILL TOPPER.DOLPHIN REMATCH A CLASSIC BATTLE

Tonight's game is a classic battle: Two nationally-ranked basketball powers clashing for the second time in less than a year, one with a motive for r evenge, the other out to prove that its win in the firs t duel between the two teams was just the way things should have turned out.

Jacksonville brings a perfect 5-0 record into the till. risk ing it against a Western Kentucky quintet which lost to the Dolphins in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last March a,t Dayton, 109-96. As every basketball fan knows, Jacksonville used that opening game as a springboard to the runncrup spot in the national playoffs, finishing second only to champion UCLA.

The Dolphins' supporters say they are even stronger this year than last. The first five games of their 1970-71 scheduile has shown nothing to disprove tha t theory. They have dusted off Biscayne, 132-88; St. Peter's, 152-106; George Washington, 110-85; Florida State, 1l4-108; and Richmond, 94-69.

Jacksonvil le's big man,

GREG NELSON

7-2 center Artis Gilmore, is off to a fabulous start. averaging 35.4 points and 27.4 rebounds to dale whi le hitting 65.2 per cent of h is field goal attempts. And that's not good enough to lead the team. The Dolphins' other seven -footer, Pembrook Burrows. holds that distinction with a fantastic 72.5 percentage wh ile averaging 13.2 points per game. As a team, Jacksonville is hitting a lofty 55.2 per cent of its shots from the floor.

The Dolphins' other starters, 6-7 wingman Ernie Fleming. 6-2 w ingman Harold Fox and the 5-10 jewel of a point guard, Vaughn Wedeking. are all averaging in double figures. Fleming shows a mean of 20.6 points, Fox 16.8. and Wedeking 10.4. Reserve front-liner Greg Nelson is also a double - digit scorer a t 13.6.

The team is averaging 120.4 points while limiting their opposition to 91.2 points per outing.

Western, of course, is led again by seven- foot pivotman Jim McDaniels. the Ohio Valley Conference's P layer of the Year last season. His scoring average has been fluttering around the 30-point mar k all season (he averaged 28,6 in 1970-71) and the agile sharpshoote r is pulling in nearly 14 rebounds per game,

The Hilltoppers' 6-8 h igh post man, Clarence Glover, is giving "Big Mack" a real battle for team leadership in rebounds, averaging almost 13 per game.

Veteran guard Jim Rose fol_ CHIP DUBLIN lows McDaniels in scoring with a near-18-point average, while junior college transfer Jerry Dunn has averaged around 15 points a game. Another JC transfer, 6-2 Rex Bailey has been Western's starter at the point, slightly more than five points.

Western's early going has been hampered somewhat by injuries. Two-year starter Jerome Perry banged up a knee in pre-season workouts and under went surgery shortly before the Hil!toppers' opening game. He will be out for most of the season.

Last year's regular point man, 6-4 Gary Sundmacker , broke an ann in mid-October, and is just now getting back in top shape,

Western knocked off Old Dominion (96-82), University of California, Davis (88- 65), Virginia Commonwealth (96-71 ) and Duquesne (69_62), before moving into Indianapolis against a pesky Butler team Saturd ay night.

If great shooting, lots of running, rugged rebounding and tenacious defense make a great basketball game, tonight's crowd at Freedom Hall is in for a rare treat.

All -American:

ARTIS GILMORE Jacksonville's meteor ic r ise as a national basket

ball power has been coincidental with the emergence of Artis Gilmore as one of the collegiate game's dominant figures. At seven feet, two inches in height , he is the Dolphi ns' coun terpa r t to Western's seven-foo t All-American, J im McDaniels (see page 12B).

Tw ice a junior college All-American, G il more earned the same honors in the big show last season as he led the nation in rebounding (22.2 per game ) and paced the Dolph ins to the run ner up spot behind UCLA in the NCAA Tournament. Nationa lly he was tenth in fie ld goal accuracy (.580, one pe r cent ahead of McDaniels) and his 26.5 scoring average was 21st (ten spots behind McDaniels' 28.6 average.)

While "Big A " is a prolific scorer in his own righ t, his most highly acclaimed attr ibutes have been his defense and his rebounding. He goes to the boa rds at both ends of the floor with an agility and determination that are enhanced all the more by h is size and st rength .

He has been acclaimed in many circles as last season's unoff icial na t iona l leader in b locked shots, a maneuver he manages with a considerable sense of the spectacular. If anyone word can descr ibe h is defense, it is "intimidating." He vir tually cuts off all inside scoring when he is in a game, ra rely movng fa r away fro m the bucket.

A tremendous leaper with outstanding agility and cvell more impressive timing, Gilmore has caused many a team to comp letely revise it s offensive ph ilosophy because of the defens ive threat he poses. His defensive dominance as a collegian, perhaps, can be compa red only with that of fo rmer UCLA star Lew Alcindor.

What's more, the presence of J acksonville's "other seven-foote r." Pembroke Burrows. in the Dol phin lineup forces opposi ng coaches to "stay honest." II brings on considerable limitations as to what can be done to coun teract Gilmore's height because the team has almost as much size in another spot on the floor.

Even wi th the great season he had last year, GilmOI'C has shown definite signs of Hdded matu r ity in the early going this season. He raised eyebrows all over the country with a record 34 rebounds against S1. Peter 's in New York's Madison Square Garden. then shortly followed with 26 more in a win over highly regarded Florida State in the Sunshine Classic.

Even after only a little more thOln one fu ll season, Gilmore alrcady hold s ol fistful of field goal and rebound records for the Dolphins. In fact, he already holds ALL the rebound records except the ca reer mark , and he will undoubtedly have that one as soon as he finishes his collegi:lte eligibility.

The "Big A" grades out a t an "All-A" rate on the cou r t.
