Managers Profile:

Name: Jason Jackson How long have you been involved with Pennine Juniors? I have been

involved with Pennine Juniors around 7 years since 2007 season.

How long have you been managing a team? I have managed a team every year

What is your football background? I was a Man Utd season ticket holder in the Stretford end for

eight years. Prior to this I played Saturday and Sunday football for local teams (Kingsway on

Saturday’s and The Grapes in Bamford on Sunday’s). I also played regular 5- a-side games but an

injury to my knee stopped me playing around two years ago.

What do you find challenging when managing a team? The thing I find most challenging is trying to

keep the training sessions fresh, fun and enjoyable and also not boring and predictable for the lads.

What do you like most about managing a team? I get to see a great bunch of lads develop as

footballers and also see them grow into young men.

What has been your funniest/best/most memorable moment? My best and most memorable

moment was being the first ever Pennine Manager to win a trophy when my under 10’s Red’s 2009-

10 season came runners up in the league narrowly missing out on being Champions by 1 point

Describe your team: My Team are a very skilful hardworking Team with a fine balance of “silk and

steel”

What are you focusing on in training at the moment? In training we are about to start playing one

touch passing, to move the ball quickly but with purpose, and ball retention, to win the ball back

when we lose possession.

Tell us about your best game to date and why it was the best: My best game is in the season we

came runners up 2009-10. We beat the eventual winners at their place 5-1. We totally dominated

all game and never gave them anything. The best game with my current team was 2 seasons ago

when we beat Roach Dynamo’s away in the cup. We were 1-0 down at halftime against a hostile

crowd and bad referee but showed great character and came back and won 2-1

What advice/tips would you give to young, up and coming footballers? The advice I would give to

any up and coming footballers is to enjoy what you’re doing and always try your best (and listen to

your Manager!)

Match reports: Opponent: Rossendale Valley Wasps Date: 07/09/13 Venue: Home Result: 5-0 (W) Match report: The fixture list wasn’t kind to us, as first up this season was a repeat of last season’s opener, home to Rossendale who, to put it bluntly, battered us 6-2 last season. As Sean has moved on to pastures new, the only change to the squad was the welcome return of Tommy Simmonds. This stability reflects the belief we have in the quality of our squad. With us playing on a very good pitch at Hopwood, there was no excuse for the footballing ability of the players not to shine through. The team set up with Joe Wrest sitting in front of the back four. This provides security for the mid field to press and allows both fall backs to get forward. The early stages were very tight with only half chances falling to both sides. This was until a quality corner from Steven was met with a powerful header from Jack which, despite a couple of desperate attempts from Rossendale defenders, found its way into the goal. 1-0 Confidence grew, however, Rossendale are a very strong team and were still very much in the game. It was crucial we got the second and that’s exactly what happened on the stroke of half time. Steven played Tommy through on goal who finished superbly. 2-0 Half time. The second half started as the first had finished, every player giving 100%, chasing down the opposition, not allowing them to play. Two great finishes from Steven put us in control and when the same player was tripped in the area he got up, dusted himself down and smashed home the resulting penalty for his hat-trick and the teams 5th goal. 5-0 final score. On days like this it is hard to single out any individuals, from keeper Jack through to Danny the quality and willingness to work for each other was top draw. However, as an example, Danny was awarded MOM. Notable mentions to Steven, Oliver and Tommy. Opponent: Middleton Lads Date: 21/09/13 Venue: Home Result: 2-3 (L) Match report: Another stern test awaited us as recently promoted ‘Middy lads’ provided the opposition. We struggled initially to get to grips with a much taller and stronger side and it was no surprise to find us 1 down. However, a superb move, involving Lewis J and Oliver, allowed Danny a sight of goal. He still had a lot to do but effortlessly clipped the ball over the advancing keeper, 1-1, quality goal. Without reaching the heights of the previous week, we were still playing well. At this level, it is a fine line between winning and losing, we almost took the lead as a long range effort from Oliver just missed the post. Unfortunately, from the resulting goal kick, they broke away and scored, 1-2. Just before the half time whistle we were punished for a handball on the line-penalty. Despite Jack getting a strong hand to it he was unable to keep it out. 1-3 Half time. As the second half began, we started to get on top. A superb finish from the impressive Dylan, made it 2-3, game on. We continued to press but the breaks wouldn’t fall for us and Middy held onto the victory.

MOM, Dylan-great goal, had a good shout for a penalty and his overall contribution was excellent. Notable mentions for Jordan and Conor. Opponent: Chaddy Park Eagles Date: 28/09/13 Venue: Away Result: 1-4 (W) Match report: Third game of the season and another good test for the lads away to Chaddy Park. On a bright sunny day, the game started fairly evenly. The only surprise in Pennines line up was Jordan starting at right back. This positional change brought an early reward when Jordan’s hopeful half volley from 40 yards out was heading towards goal. The unfortunate Chaddy keeper lost the flight of the ball in the sun and it dropped into the net, 1-0. As the half continued we began to get on top, although we were unable to extend our lead until a good move involving Lewis Jordan and Dylan allowed the impressive Steven a yard of space to smash the ball into the bottom corner, 2-0, half time. With Jack in goal, playing as good as ever, behind a solid back four, led by Will Marsh, we were confident of continuing in the second half where we had left off in the first. However, the second half started and we were slow out of the blocks, this handed the momentum to Chaddy so testing through balls were dealt with by Jack and Will to keep the game at 2-0. We slowly started to get a grip of the game and when Steven let fly from outside the box the keeper carried the ball twice only for it to drop at the feet of Ol, who knocked it in from 2 yards, making it 3-0, game over-or so we thought but Chaddy came back at us, their impressive right winger whipped a cross in for their striker to finish off the post for 3-1. Any thoughts of a comeback were soon quashed when a Steven corner found its way to the back post for Dylan to poke home the 4th. Final score 4-1. As ever our team seemed to take it in turns to shine, notable mentions today go to Keeper Jack-some excellent saves and superb handling and positive in all he did. Jordan D’Arcy despite carrying an injury played right back and his excellent performance was rewarded with a goal. Kane appears to be getting stronger and better with every game. Dylan Robinson continued his goal scoring start to the season. Steven Nairn was a constant thorn in the opposition’s side. However, the MOM deservedly went to Will Marsh his performance today reminded me of one of my favourites, Paul McGarth. In conclusion, at the end of the game there was no over celebration just a sense of the players beginning to believe in themselves and each other. Opponent: Ladybridge Date: 05/10/13 Venue: Home Result: 2-3 (L) Match report: League newcomers LadyBridge were today’s opponents in what turned out to be an excellent contest between two well matched sides. Despite LadyBridge having the majority of possession it was Pennine who took the lead. A great through ball by Brandon found Dylan who cut in from the right and coolly clipped the ball over the advancing keeper. 1-0. LadyBridge though, were still very much in the game and following a goal mouth scramble levelled 1-1 half time. The match was finally balanced so when a moment of magic from Ste firing left foot from the edge of the box gave us a 2-1 lead we thought the game was ours. However, with 20 mins to go the game was far from over. A very tight offside decision denied Dylan his second

and what would have been a crucial third. None the less, we were in control, and looked capable of seeing the game out. Then the sucker punch-with just over 5 minutes to go, a free kick was lofted into our area and so for the first time all afternoon we failed to defend the ball and were punished as possibly the smallest player on the pitch nodded in from only a couple of yards out. The cruel LadyBridge winner came in the last minute, when another free kick took a deflection off a Pennine head to fall invitingly to the LadyBridge player, whose first effort was saved by Jack, only for the rebound to come straight back to him for him to roll into the empty net. Joy for LadyBridge, despair for Pennine. In summary, the effort and work rate today cannot be faulted, seeing the despair on all the lads faces today showed it was a game we didn’t deserve to lose but that’s football. MOM Dylan Robinson, great goal-could possibly should have had two whose form has been top drawer all season. Notable mentions, Will Marsh quality display at the back, Kane Donohue getting back to his best, Jack Flett solid and faultless in goal. Opponent: Westbury Wonderers Date: 12/10/13 Venue: Away Result: 5-0 (L) Match report: Against the reigning league champs we had to start well, which is exactly what we didn’t do. Within less than 10 seconds of our kick off we were 1 down. Another lack of concentration and we were 2 down within 5 minutes. We don’t half know how to make things difficult for ourselves!! However, against a quality team and a strong wind, we dug in and battled hard to go in at half time only 2-0 down. With the wind behind us, we started the second half brightly, only to concede a third Westbury goal from their first attack of the second half. We continued to show character and but for some inspired defending and an informed keeper, who was voted their man of the match, we could easily have got back into the game but it wasn’t to be. Two further goals gave Westbury a slightly flattering 5-0 win. In summary, we must learn to concentrate from the first whistle. To give a team like Westbury, or any team in this league, a two goal start makes things hard for ourselves. However, we dusted ourselves down and showed good character to keep battling away. MOM Lewis Fern, good display in both full back and centre half roles. His form continues to improve. Notable mentions, Ste and Dylan, who battled hard without reward, Brandon who gave his best display of the seasons. Opponent: Oldham Rangers Date: 19/10/13 Venue: Away Result: 2-4 (W) Match report: We had to dust ourselves down and bounce back after last weeks under par performance. We started well, however the chances we created were not being converted (a theme that carried on throughout the game) that was until Dylan played the ball through to Danny whose shot came off the post to the feet of Oliver, who found the back of the net via bar and post, 1-0. This should have settled us down but were having none of it and came back to equalise 1-1. The lead was soon restored when Danny’s shot was parried by the keeper; Oliver pounced on the loose ball and squared it to the advancing Danny whose neat finish gave us the lead 2-1. We once again let Oldham back into the game (when one of the

few times the ref didn’t blow his whistle even though it appeared the Oldham forward was stood in an offside position) they equalised 2-2 half time. The lads were told to up their game at half time; it seemed to work as were created chance after chance. It was only a matter of time before one of these were converted which happened when Steven, not for the first time this morning, was one on one with the keeper but this time found the net. We began to dominate but until we got a 4th they were still in the game. Danny put our nerves at rest by taking a superb through ball from Lewis Jordan to finish with some style, 4-2. In summary, the game was disjointed by numerous free kicks which although you could argue were technically correct the discussions that followed each decision prevented a flowing game. MOM Steve for keeping going when things were not going his way and notable mentions Lewis Jordan, fearless and dominant in mid field, Tommy-great effort and trickery on the wing, Conor for a solid performance at the back and Keeper, one great save and faultless throughout. Opponent: Middleton Boys Date: 09/11/13 Venue: Away Result: 1-2 (W) Match report: Away game in the cup verses Middleton Boys who are flying high in the division below and unbeaten this season. The recent rain had made the pitch heavy but playable. From the first whistle Middleton was obviously up for the game! Driven on by our old player Sean, they had the upper hand from the early on. Despite Middleton having the greater possession the better chances were falling to us but we were unable to convert what were mainly half chances. It was no surprise when a nice passing move led to Sean (no surprise) giving Middleton the lead. However, as the half went on we began to get a foot hold in the game and could easily have grabbed an equaliser but Steve was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post and rebound to safety. Half time 0-1 Strong words were had at half time and the lads reacted well, we began to compete better and win challenges. This effort was rewarded when Steve clipped the ball over the advancing keeper for the equaliser. Not long after a fantastic move was rewarded with what turned out to be the winner. When Tommy received the ball from Conor deep in his own half he ignored the advice from the side lines to ‘clear it’. Instead he hit a perfect first time pass, in field, to Oliver who had time and space to pick out Steven. His fine ball over the top enabled Steve to run onto the ball and take it deep into the penalty areas. As the keeper came out he looked up and squared the ball to Tommy, who was rewarded for his ‘lung busting’ run, to fire home his second of the season, 2-1. With 20 minutes to go Middy were still very much in the game the lads showed great character to dig in and be strong in the challenge. In difficult conditions, the heavy rain now lashing down, every player battled for everything. Middy had chances but Jacks handling was safe and secure despite the atrocious conditions. With the game opening up we had a couple of chances to put the game out of reach but were denied on both occasions by a convenient offside flag. Final score 2.1.

In summary, a great cup tie, very well refereed (the best this season) between two well matched sides providing great entertainment to both sets of supporters. Good luck to Middleton for the rest of the season, keep this level of performance up and we will surely see you in the premier next season. M.O.M and Notable mentions are not easy today as everyone put in a decent shift. However, for his continued improvement this season culminating with his best performance for a long time Kane Donohue was deservedly awarded M.O.M. Notable mentions, keeper Jack, Will, Dylan, Ol, Steve…in fact the whole team, well done to you all. Opponent: Chaddy Park Eagles Date: 16/11/13 Venue: Home Result: 2-2 (D) Match report: With Chaddy Parks results showing recent improvement we expected a tougher challenge than when we first met them earlier in the season….we weren’t disappointed. In what has now become a worrying habit we started slowly allowing Chaddy to get the upper hand in early exchanges. Gradually we began to win individual battles and imposed ourselves in the game. With Danny and Ste battling hard up front we started creating chances, none better than when Stevens cross found Oliver in the penalty area. Oliver’s shot was saved by the keeper, however, the rebound fell to Danny who did everything right but the keeper showed fantastic reactions and palmed the ball away and again, stopped the shot going in. It was stalemate for the rest of the half with both teams equally sharing a number of corners and half chances. 0-0 Half time. If the first half was even and hard fought, the second half was taken to a higher level with both teams giving their all and plenty of strong but fair challenges. First blood to Chaddy, a smart ball over the top allowed their striker to roll the ball past the advancing Jack and into the net, 0-1. We kenw we were still very much in the match and when Oliver worked some space for himself in the middle Steven didn’t need a second invitation as he set off on a run towards goal and was found by Ol’s perfect ball over the top. There was still a lot to do, however, he finished with some style, 1-1. We began to get on top however we came up against a keeper in fine form who dealt with everything we could throw (or kick) at him. Chaddy were still a threat but Will and Jack were rocks at the back, assisted by some smart work at full back by Conor, Kane and Lewis. We were dealing with Chaddys best efforts until their impressive number 9 burst into the area to fire a rocket shot into the roof of the net, 1-2. Once again, we showed great character and kept taking the game to Chaddy. This effort was reward when following a goal mouth scramble, the ball fell to Joe Wrest whose shot was once again parried by the inform keeper but this time the rebound fell to Steven who calmly side footed the ball home for a deserved equaliser. In summary last week’s game was good, this week was better! Effort, desire and no little skill, the game had it all. Full credit to both teams. M.O.M Oliver Lee for a tireless and skilful display against a quality opponent in the middle of the park, closely followed by impressive displays from Jack T, Will, Conor, Kane and Steven.

Opponent: Ladybridge Date: 30/11/13 Venue: Away Result: 3-3 (D) Match report: After hearing the news that Middleton lads had fielded an over aged player and had all their points taken away this was a great chance for us to go joint second, just beat Ladybridge who are currently second. The weather was perfect and the pitch was good, a bit heavy in places but we fancied our

chances after narrowly losing the reverse fixture to a dubious refereeing decision.

Pennine started strongly and after a couple of early chances took a deserved lead through

Tommy Simmonds with a good move and a precise shot to the top corner. We continued to

probe and plenty of chances came our way. Oli, Danny and Ste all came close, Stephen

hitting the bar with an audacious chip. The general feeling was if we didn’t score soon we

would regret it, as the referee who was coming out of a long retirement for this game, just

wasn’t keeping up with play. This proved correct as Ladybridge scored a goal from an

obvious offside position.

Half time and the score was 1-1 but we knew we should be out of sight by now so were

chomping at the bit to start the second half. This was a more even half and the home team

started to compete more, but after a good move down the right and a quality ball in, Oliver

appeared at the back post to convert. The lead didn’t last long as the Ladybridge midfielder

suddenly found himself in acres of space to run at goal and get a free shot off. Jack had no

chance.

After a few half chances from either side and some questionable referring decisions (for

both sides) the deadlock was broken once again. A Pennine corner was delivered into the

box, then in one swift move Tommy caught it on the half volley and watched it fly into the

top corner. What a beauty!!!

Once again, almost immediately, before we could settle down from our euphoria Ladybridge

struck again. This was a long range shot which was equally as good as our own third goal

and that too went sailing into the top corner. 3-3 and time was running out, both Teams

were trying to win it now but temperatures were getting a bit heated and the referee wasn’t

handling it all so he decided to blow the final whistle.

Managers Summary

A well-earned draw against a good strong Team, but I felt we should have won the game in

the first half. All the lads put in another good shift with special mentions to Danny Cryer

who ran his socks off, Dylan and Jack Flett who put in solid performances and Man of the

Match Tommy Simmonds who scored two great strikes and had his best game to date.

Opponent: Westbury Wonderers Date: 07/12/13 Venue: Home Result: 1-2 (L) Match report: Well, what can I say…..? ’The best team lost’, ‘you don’t always get what you deserve’, ‘we was robbed’ and any other similar clichés you can think of. Okay that is the frustration out of the system, now onto the report. With keeper Jack away, we were looking for volunteers to take his jersey. Dylan and Ol sacrificed their game to take a half each. Following our last two matches against Westbury when we suffered heavy defeats we changed to a five man midfield. We thought playing at home on a bigger pitch would suit our team. It took a while for the lads to adapt to the new system thus allowing Westbury to gain the upper hand although only testing Dylan from long range, until a scramble in our box fell invitingly to the Westbury forward to stroke home. 0-1. They had another chance to double the lead only for Dylan to make a fine save and Jack T completed the clearance. As the half continued, we began to get more and more into the game however once again their impressive keeper mopped up most of the danger before it could lead to any clear cut chances. By this stage the momentum was with us, Steve played a ball back to Lewis J who laid it onto Tommy but his shot was blocked. A couple of free kicks came to nothing, until we won a corner which Ol swung in for Steve to head perfectly into the net. That was just the spark we needed, you could see the confidence surge through the team, we were faster to the ball, stronger in the tackle and starting to pass the ball around as good as any team. Pressing high, we continued to push Westbury further and further back although they were still dangerous on the break, h/t 1-1 Changes at half time, Ol in goal for Dylan, Jorden and Joe were already on and we continued to dominate only to be caught with a sucker punch on the break, for once our defence was beaten by an inch perfect through ball which their striker took in their stride and poked passed Ol into the corner of the net, from then on, Ol was a virtual spectator. We huffed and puffed, Steve shaved the post, Tommy had a shot blocked by the keepers legs, the whole back four were now marauding forward at will, and surely the equaliser would come. Chances came and went; desperate challenges fell kindly for Westbury, a number of desperate Westbury challenges led to free kicks, none of which led to an equaliser. The footballing gods had decided it wasn’t to be. In summary despite the defeat, we have to take a lot from this game. Westbury are a great side and to dominate them for long period’s shows just how good we are. Man of the match was a difficult decision as everyone played at or close to their best however for not only for the part he played in defence but also for his attacking role, Conor Jackson got the nod. Notable mentions, the whole team, you should be proud of your performance today and our improvement continues. Best of luck to Westbury in the County cup semi-final.

Opponent: Middleton Lads and Girls Date: 14/12/13 Venue: Away Result: 7-2 (L) Match report: This was a fixture we were looking forward to replaying, as the original

fixture saw Middleton field an over aged and therefore ineligible player. We only just lost

that match 3-2 with the over aged lad playing a crucial role in a couple of their goals. The

league in their wisdom let Middleton replay the game rather than punish them, a decision

that still baffles us now!!

We turned up on a cold wet day to a pitch whose conditions reflected the weather. When

we saw our opponents, we thought we was on the wrong pitch and this was an under 15s

match as they all looked older, bigger and more physical than us.

Unfortunately we was wrong, this team seemed bigger and older than the previous one. We

started our game and almost immediately Middleton took the initiative, with our boys

looking somewhat tentative.

After 10 mins their right midfielder lobbed a searching ball into our box, with Jack under

some pressure he totally missed the ball and it landed in the back of the net, 1-0 down. This

was pretty much the story of the first half, they outmuscled us and seemed to thrive off our

fear and hesitation. We came off at half time 5-0 down, very despondent and feeling sorry

for ourselves.

After a stern half time team talk, our lads started the second half with the plan to forget the

first half and start as though it was 0-0 and go out and win the second half.

This seemed to work as we sensed Middleton tiring and we galvanised and started playing

like we normally can. It paid off as the ball was played in from the right wing and Dan Cryer

side footed home superbly. But as we pushed forward to try and get another we left our

defence exposed and got caught on the break, their striker taking it round jack and scoring,

6-1 with 10 mins remaining.

Our second goal was to follow with a mazy run by Conor Jackson from right back to half way

inside the Middleton half followed by an inch perfect through ball to Oliver who took it

calmly and finished beautifully on the second attempt.

Opponent: Oldham Rangers Date: 18/01/14 Venue: Home Result: 4-1 (W) Match report: After defeats in our last two games, we were anxious to get playing again so were pleasantly surprised when a pitch change at Hopwood allowed the game to go ahead. With Kane unavailable changes had to be made at the back. Tommy volunteered for the right back slot with Conor switching to left back. The old partnership of Lewis Fern and Will was reunited at the heart of the defence. The pitch appeared in good condition, unfortunately first appearances proved deceptive as the ball bobbled uncontrollably in some parts but ran true in other areas making it extremely difficult to play passing football. We started brightly with Danny making his presence felt upfront and Jordan stamping his authority on the match in the centre of the field. With Ste and Ol starting on the bench, corner taking duties fell to Jordan. He was soon rewarded for this when, after Jacks shot was well saved by the Oldham keeper, Jordan took the resulting corner and curled it directly into the goal for his second of the season. We continued to have the upper hand without creating many clear cut chances, until Danny was fouled half way in the Oldham half. The free kick appeared too far out for a shot, however, Jack floated the ball into the box, and it evaded both forwards and defenders nestling in the back of the net for Jacks second of the season. 2-0 Half time With Lewis Jordan now on for Tommy, the defence continued to provide a solid foundation which we hoped would provide us with the confidence to push on in the second half. It didn’t work out that way; Rangers with a strengthening wind behind them began to get a foothold in the game. A long range free kick was well saved by Jack and soon after we broke away, Steve’s cross evaded all apart from Danny whose goal bound shot was helped over the line by the despairing Rangers defender, 3-0, just reward for Danny’s effort, his fifth of the season. Full credit to Rangers, despite a difficult season and being three down they continued to have a go, pulling a goal back. Any chance of a comeback was thwarted when we scored a fourth. If there was an element of good fortune with our first three goals, this was not the case with the last. A sweeping move when Jack received the ball near the half way line, he looked up and switched the play to Steven, who sped forward taking him past defenders and the advancing keeper. Despite running out of pitch, he managed to pull the ball back for the advancing Ol, to sweep the ball first time into the corner of the goal. 4-1 Full time In summary: The pitch prevented any free flowing football today but the lads battled hard and came out the winners.

Notable mentions: Lewis Jordan-for an impressive performance in the unfamiliar right back role. Lewis Fern-for a dominant performance at centre back, back to his best. Danny-for a tireless display up front, back tracking to help the mid field more than once. MOM: Dylan Robinson who mastered the difficult conditions better than anyone, was a constant threat going forward and showed great commitment to the cause in his tracking back. Opponent: Westbury Wanderers Date: 01/03/14 Venue: Away Result: 2-1 (L) Match report: To follow Opponent: Whitworth Valley-Cup game Date: 08/03/14 Venue: Home Result: 1-0 (W) Match report: Having disposed of previously unbeaten Middy boys in the first round we were drawn against another unbeaten team, in division B leaders and champions elect Whitworth Valley, in round 2 of the main cup. With only Joe Wrest missing due to his broken ankle (best of luck for a speedy recovery Joe) we had a full squad to choose from. The early stages set the precedent for the rest of the game with us having plenty of possession, with Jack a virtual spectator in goal and us being unable to convert the chance we made. The condition of the pitch did not help, long grass in places, very bobbly, the lines not marked out, hardly made it conducive for playing the beautiful game. Surely a cut, roll and some marking is not much to ask for! Despite us dominating possession we just could not break down a brave and resilient rear guard display from Whitworth. However, with 30 minutes gone the decisive goal came…determined play by Dylan earned a corner that Steven took; swinging over an inviting cross that Lewis Fearn met with a perfect header to power home his first goal of the season. We expected to push on and make our dominance count with more goals however Whitworth we not going to just lie down and let us. Although we huffed and puffed with many chances going astray and the crossbar coming to Whitworths rescue with the score at 1-0 there was always the chance of an equaliser. Sure enough it nearly came when a rare Whitworth break away saw them hit the post, this was the closest they came as we safely saw the game out for a 1-0 win. In summary: Full credit to Whitworth who had a game plan and it nearly came off. A bit more composure in front of goal and this would have been a comfortable victory. MOM for a faultless defensive display and an expertly taken goal was Lewis Fearn. Notable mention to Jordan D’Arcy and Oliver Lee.

Opponent: Chaddy Park Eagles Date: 15/03/14 Venue: Away Result: 1-1 (D) Match report: To avoid the ‘ploughed’ field that masquerades as a football pitch, we gave up home advantage to play this match at Chaddys ground. Games between ourselves and Chaddy are usually close, tight affairs and this turned out to be no different. With the wind behind us we started brightly and within 5 minutes a superb 50 yard diagonal ball by Jack found Danny, there seemed little danger when he received the ball, however, he expertly let the ball come across his body and struck the ball perfectly to find the back of the net via the inside of the post, 1-0. The game was very even for rest of the half however we didn’t seem to be getting the rub of the green with the Refs decisions. The first half stat, Pennine free kicks 1, Chaddy free kicks 14…I gave up counting in the second half but the pattern was repeated. Half time 1-0 With Chaddy having the wind behind them they began to dominate the second half with the impressive playmaker Ryan dominating the play. However, despite their possession and due to a resilient display from the whole team especially the back four, few clear cut chances were created. When the equaliser did come there was more than an element of luck about it. Their left winger stretched to keep the ball in and swung the ball across from the bye line. At this stage there seemed little danger until the wind caught it and blew the ball agonisingly into the back of the net, 1-1 Chaddy smelt blood, however our impressive defence, Keeper Jack, Kane, Conor, Jack, Will and Lewis (until he had to go off with a head injury) comfortably saw out the rest of the game, 1-1 a fair result. In summary: It seems Chaddy will be moving onto pastures new next season which if this does happen will be a pity as they are a well-run club and we have enjoyed many great encounters with them over recent years. MOM: Jack Taylor a commanding performance at the centre of defence and created our goal.. Notable mention: Danny Cryer, Will Marsh and Jack Flett Opponent: Oldham Rangers Date: 22/03/14 Venue: Home Result: 5-0 (W) Match report: Having woken up to a bright but watery, sun filled sky we were hopeful of good weather for this morning’s match…it did not turn out like that! Team changes were made with Lewis Fearn and Will reunited at the heart of the defence and a new central midfield duo full of endeavour and quick feet made up of Tommy and Jordan. Up front Jack and Ste were starting together for only the second time this season. Conor, Kane, Ol and Dylan complete the 11. When the referee blew it signalled the start of not only the match but also the bitter North East wind to scythe away the blue sky and bombard the players and spectators with a

combination of rain, sleet and hailstones drenching all (on and off the pitch) to the bone. During this assault from the sky we took the lead. Steven swung a corner in hard and low with Jordan making a nuisance of himself at the rear post the ball was deflected in off the Oldham defender 1-0 . Although the first goal had an element of fortune about it the second was a quality team goal. As the pitch was both wide and in relatively good condition it gave the team the confidence to play some passing football which was evidently displayed when a combination of passes between Conor and Dylan fed the ball through to Ste who sped past the full back crossing for Jack to fire home our second and his third of the season. We created a number of chances most notably when Tommy threaded a defence splitting pass through to the ever alert Dylan whose shot shaved the outside of the post. We looked comfortable at the back and as half time approached Lewis Jordan and Danny had fitted seamlessly into the team. Half time 2-0. Another downpour soaked us all at the start of the second half however we continued to play some good football without increasing the lead until Danny instantly controlled a poor goal kick from the Oldham keeper to return it with interest into the back of the net. In doing so he continued his excellent recent goal scoring form of 6 goals in the last 7 games. Confidence was now high which despite the poor weather we were playing some of our best football of the season. The second goal was a great passing goal but the 4th was arguably better…there seemed little danger when Ol received the ball to feet just inside the Rangers half, he held the ball up well allowing Conor to overlap on his outside, then he found him and sent him the ball with a clever back heel. Conor controlled the ball and played a neat ball inside to Danny who turned and slotted an inch perfect pass through to Dylan who made no mistake to fire into the roof of the net, 4-0. Jack F and his defence were determined to keep another clean sheet as a Oldham free kick seemed destined for the top corner Jack stretched out a strong arm and palmed it on to the post with the defence completing the clearance. Ste who had battled hard all game, without reward finally got the goal his performance deserved when Jack, having swapped positions with Ol, played a neat ball into Stevens feet who then finished confidently to complete the scoring 5-0. In summary: Well done to all today, our form continues to improve with only the narrow defeat to Westbury being our only loss this year. Continue working hard and encouraging each other and this could yet be a rewarding season. M.O.M for an assured performance at the back and a couple of runs forward was deservedly given to Will Marsh. Notable mentions to Conor who was tenacious in the tackle and had a hand in two of the goals, Lewis Jordan for his strength and ability to keep possession in centre of Midfield and also Dylan for some great runs both up and down the field, scored a goal and with a little luck, could have had a hat trick.

Opponent: ROCS Date: 05/04/14 Venue: Away Result: 1-4 (W) Match report: Main Cup 3rd Round: Quarter Final Cup game this week, once again and for the third time this season we were paired against an unbeaten side. ROCS from the league below were providing the opposition. Looking at ROCS leagues record they are steam rolling their way to what seems like an inevitable promotion; therefore we were expecting a tough match. With keeper Jack recovering from illness (barring Joe) at full strength. Drizzly weather greeted both parents and players alike resulting in a pitch which was okay in places but had puddles and areas of ankle deep mud in others. We started off the game on the front foot, within ten minutes chances fell to both Steve and Danny but unluckily they could not convert. ROCS were barely threatening until a long clearance was flicked on to their impressive number three, who was a threat all day, to run onto it and coolly slot pass the advancing Jack. 0-1. With missed chances and ROCS scoring from their first attack, was it going to be one of those games? Their goal certainly spurred on the opposition and their supports as they sensed an upset. The next twenty minutes were fairly even until Tommy won a corner which Steve swung over from the right which resulted in a goal mouth scramble, the ball eventually feel to the feet of Lewis Jordan who poked home with his left foot for his first goal of the season and one that his recent form thoroughly deserved. After the equalizer we began to take control but were unable to turn our superiority into goals. Half time 1-1. Despite pre match talk of how good the opposition were there seemed a realisation amongst the lads during the half time team talk that we were the better side and the game was ours for the taking. This belief was justified within three minutes of the restart as we took the lead with a goal of sheer quality that had both sets of supporters applauding…Jack Taylor, who was in commanding form all match drove a 40 yard diagonal pass to Brandon on the right hand side, Brandon controlled the ball instantly and slid a perfect ball in field to the feet of Ol, who in turn instantly brought the ball under control, glanced up to see Danny curving his run to stay onside who he found with a great ball. The curls of the ball rolled perfectly into Danny’s path however, he still had plenty to do but with the great goal scoring form Danny is in at the moment, he did not hesitate to fire the ball across the keeper into the far corner of the net…what a goal! Our new coach at training is certainly having an effect ;-) With the defence sniffing out any danger, our midfield on top and Danny and Steve a constant threat up front we were in control. However, as we know at 2-1, the game was far from safe, the next goal was crucial. It deservedly came in our favour, there seemed little danger when Ol played Brandon in down the right, he showed great tenacity and a lot of skill to battle himself past two defenders into the penalty area, as a third defender came across to him he poked a square ball to Steven who coolly slotted home for his twelfth goal of the season. 3-1. With fifteen minutes to go we were now well on top, the fourth and final goal deservedly came when Jordan swung over an inviting corner deep to the far post where Brandon was

waiting to power home an unstoppable header for his first of the season and just reward for a great performance. Final score 4-1. Full credit to ROCS who kept battling hard, best of luck for the rest of the season, I am sure you will be in the Prem next season. Credit also to the ref who controlled the game in an excellent manner, acknowledging good play from both sides. In summary: Once again each and every player put in a great shift and fully played their part in an impressive team performance. However a M.O.M award has to be given and no one gave more than Brandon whose all-round performance capped with an assist and a goal resulted with him getting the nod. Notable mentions: Every player deserved credit today however Keep Jacks handling despite the conditions was excellent, Jack and Will a combination of strength, pace and skill were dominant in the back, Ol kept control of the mid field and Danny’s efforts in the final third cannot go unrecognised. Opponent: Chaddy Park Vipers Date: 12/04/14 Venue: Home Result: 9-2 (W) Match report: Main Cup: Semi Final This was the first time during our cup run that we were paired against a team that had actually lost a game! Having convincingly beaten the Vipers in last season subsidiary cup we were confident in progressing however we warned the lads against complacency as the Vipers have obviously performed well to reach this far in the main cup. The pre match preparations were quite frankly a farce. For the semi-final for the prestigious main cup the organisation at Hopwood was nothing short of a shambles! We were allocated pitch five; however we found this was already in use. The next pitch suggested was to be used later so we were moved to a third pitch. By the time the goals were unlocked and in position the allotted kick off time had already past. Thankfully both Chaddy and the referee were understanding of the situation. Perhaps it was the pre match disruption or simply semi-final nerves but we did not start confidently. Ball control was poor and passes were going astray, this gave Chaddy a lift and they sensed an upset. Thankfully nerves were settled when Lewis Jordan fired across the goal, the ball evaded the goal and on rushing forwards alike, however, in what is becoming a reoccurring theme, Danny did not give up the loose ball and kept it in play. Looking up he found Dylan in space who curled the ball with the outside of his foot into the top corner, 1-0. The Danny/Dylan partnership brought the second when Danny chipped the ball through to Dylan who instantly controlled it and in the same movement smashed the ball into the back of the net. 2-0. By now we were on top and if it was not for the outstanding Chaddy Keeper we would have been out of sight. Chances came and went notably when Lewis Jordan headed against the bar. The third goal eventually came after Lewis Jordan fired a shot that was blocked by the keeper only to rebound to Ol who coolly finished with his left foot from outside the box. 3-0. Steven, who started as sub, was now on and determined to get on the goal sheet. This duly happened when he wriggled his way through and fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. 4-0 Half time.

The second half started pretty much as the first had ended so when Jordan was fouled 30 yards out he took the ensuing free kick himself, which crept in off the far post. 5-0. Game over….or so we thought! Chaddy were not going down without a fight and they responded with a fine free kick of their own 5-1. Ste got his second and our sixth with a simple tap in. The team spirit we have at the moment resonated throughout the team. This was epitomised when Lewis Jordan swapped positions with Jack Taylor to allow him a more attacking role. Jack quickly repaid this favour by notching his fourth of the season to make it 7-1. Dylan showed great determination to achieve his hat trick, 8-1. Full credit to Chaddy who showed great spirit to keep fighting and playing to the end, this resolve was rewarded with a 2nd goal, 8-2. Steven, not to be outdone by Dylan, completed his hat trick following good work by Ol and Jack. Final score 9-2. In summary: Some top performances today however MOM deservedly went to Dylan for a great hat trick and quality all round performance. Notable mentions to Kane whose performances have improved all season, Brandon whose rich vein of form continues, Danny whose chasing of lost causes and intelligent play cannot go unrecognised and of course, Steven for his second hat trick of the season. Finally, special mention and great credit must go to Chaddy players and their management team whose spirit and determination to keep playing football the right way was appreciated by all watching. They are a credit to themselves and their club. Opponent: Tottington Date: 17/05/14 Venue: Away Result: 0-3 (L) Match report: Main Cup: Final The tree lined Stoneclough pitch was bathed in sunshine for this eagerly awaited cup final. In a strange twist to the fixtures this was our 5th cup game whereas todays opponents had only had to win one game to get to the final. The first half was very tight we restricted Totty to long range slots that didn’t trouble keeper Jack. We created a couple of half chances, one where Ste rounded the keeper but was unlucky not to finish, Tommy also had a shout for a penalty. With the fourth minute of added time at the end of the first half fast approaching…a killer blow. There seemed little danger with the ball bobbling around outside our box until the Totty impressive Centre Forward hooked the all goal wards which flew over Jack, 0-1 half time. If goals change games this was a great example. Our lads trooped off, heads down, whereas the Totty lads seemed to come off even bigger and better than when they started. Playing up hill under the burning sun we knew the second half was going to be tough. We battled hard but created very little, having to respond to Totty who ran out deserved winner 0-3. Sometimes you have to accept the better team won which was the case today. Although not many could have claimed to have played to their full potential today, Dylan was chosen as our man of the match with notable mentions to Lewis Jordan who gave his all to the game, playing in various positions.

In summary, the lads were obviously disappointed today however on reflection reaching the main Cup final is a great achievement. On the cup run we were the first team to beat Middy Lads, Whitworth and ROCS. To put into context, no Pennine team has ever reached the Main Cup final prior to this season so let’s bounce back and finish the season strong and win it next time. Opponent: Middy Lads Date: 28/05/14 Venue: Away Result: 8-2 (L) Match report: Due to various teams dropping out of the division and games being replaced this was our first league games since March 12th. We had suffered our heaviest defeat of the season last time we played Middy so with Lewis Fern already out with a broken arm our defence was further weakened by the absence of Jack Taylor, we knew we were up against it. The game didn’t start well…the imposing size of the opposition appeared to leave our lads a little overawed and we soon found ourselves 3 down, however a spectacular effort from Ste gave us a foothold in the game 3-1. We began to start playing some good football however Middy’s direct style led to a 4th goal before half time 4-1. With encouragement at half time, to keep playing football and passing the ball, we started the second half well. However we just couldn’t handle the superior strength and pace of the opposition who, despite having less possession, still managed to storm into the lead 7-1 with 25 minutes to go. At this stage our character began to show through and although far from dominating the game we were at least holding our own. With another injury shout, Jack had to leave the field after a collision with a Middy striker, just to rub salt in the wounds Middy were awarded a penalty which although stand in Keeper Ol got a hand to it crept over the line, 8-1. Great credit to the lads, who kept going and a couple of half chances were missed until Danny coolly slotted home for a deserved 2nd goal, score 8-2. Although this was probably one of our biggest defeats little criticism could be given to the team as against great adversity, they kept playing. Always keep your heads up lads and go again for the last game of the season. Leading the line in a tenacious display and knocking home his 10th of the season the MOM award was deservedly given to Danny.

Opponent: Middy Lads Date: 31/05/14 Venue: Home Result: 5-3 (W) Match report: With both Lewis Fern and Jack Taylor not playing today coupled with the 8-2 mid-week thrashing we feared the worst. Our fears were soon realised when Middy Lads direct approach rewarded them with 2 early goals. A neat finish by Tommy gave us hope however, a goal straight from the kick off and the 2 goal lead was restored, 1-3.

At this stage something started to change, midfield battles were being won, Middy Lads pace was being nullified by the defence and Dan and Ste were a constant menace. Tommy got his, and our, 2nd with another fine finish. 2-3. Spirits were lifted, we suddenly looked stronger and when Brandon won a penalty we were back in the game as Ste duly dispatched it, 3-3. You could almost see the belief surge through the team. This belief and effort was rewarded as Ste thundered a diagonal shot in off the post 4-3, half time. The team returned more determined than ever however we knew Middy would come at us in the second half, the next goal was going to be crucial. It came our way when an inch perfect through ball put Danny through, one on one, with the Keeper. He ignored shouts from the side line to hit it hard and low and produced a delightful chip which, although the goal keeper got a hand to, he could not prevent the ball hitting the back of the net 5-3. Chances came and went to both sides but with Danny and Tommy now off injured, we were down to a bear eleven. However, sheer determination and no little talent, ensured we saw the game out for a well-deserved victory. As in previous games, it is difficult to highlight individual performances, on this occasion, we could not as each member of the team performed very close to their best and so each and everyone one of them were awarded a man of the match award.
