Your birthday today: Opportunity for m a t e r i a l improvement comes your way in the upcoming year—what you make of it depends more on your -own efforts and less on luck or any system. Today's natives are usually v e r y pleasant, guided more by intuition and emotion than by logic.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Things brighten up today. Line up your weekend chores early, and get moving. Your friends have lively, interesting ideas to share!
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Check your facts, figure out your personal budget, plan your weekend time. Confidential inquiries may bring you much-needed p e r s p e c t i v e or background information f o r judging present questions.

Peter the Great,'famous for his attempts to Westernize Russia in the 18th century, was attracted not by W e s t e r n culture, but by Western military power and industrial productivity. T o ^ Increase Russian productivity, Peter started by encouraging sobriety, T h e World Almanac says. He made all men jailed for drunkenness wear a "medal for hard drink, ing" around their necks during their imprisonment. The medal weighed 18 pounds.
Flying Farmers Give Awards KANSAS CITY,. (AP) -
Award winners and a flying grandfather attracted most of the attention Wednesday at the International Flying Farmers convention.
The flying grandfather is veteran aviator Max Conrad, who announced plans at the convention for another attempt at a record world flight.
Conrad, 66, and the grandfather of 27, plans to set out Nov. 30 from Winona, Minn., in his twin-engine Piper called "St. Louis Woman" to fly over both the North and South poles. If successful, he could set three records—flying equator to equator over one pole, from one pole to the other, and around the world over both poles.
The award winners included Carl E. Zettlemoyer of Kutz-town, Pa., who was named "flying farmer" of the year.
Listen to everybody's ideas, then go right ahead doing what you bad planned to do from the start. You gain momentum as you go along, and matters stretch out into a%*lg day (and evening).
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Young people are apt to be surprising. Changes in plans are typical of today. Keep a calm approach. It smooths by nightfall.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept 22): Link forces with somebody who has a big idea and trying to make it work. Dress brightly, move smartly. Suggestions for handling money may strike you as wild and unfeasible. The . conservative approach is most reliable now.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The elaborate and expensive places are apt to be full and not up to par. Go somewhere less pretentious for eating or shopping. Your home may inspire quite a vigorous spurt of housekeeping or maintenance, but afvoid fatigue.
SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov. 21): Your ambition drives you .'.to a whole series of actions intended to advance your career and romantic interests today. Think about which of these actions is more important and concentrate on first things first,
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): If you will avoid the temptation to tease your loved ones, today can be one of simple joy in just being alive and active.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22^Jan. 19): Friends, older people -in particular, turn out to be surprisingly helpful today. ' Go along with the crowd for the moment.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Offer and hope to receive cooperation. Promote b e 11 e r relations with relatives and inlaws. Make belated short trips and courtesy calls.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You may be asked to keep a venture confidential or entirely secret — do^arf Put some time into^yojH^lavorlte sport or hobby /ti^ay on this evening. Find-or give a nice party this even* ing. ;
