There have been recent changes, beginning with the appointment of Dr. Steve Lee as our new interim Residency Program Director effecve September. He brings tremendous vision and resources that will help maximize our Department’s potenal. Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It has been an eventful year for Radiation Oncology. There have been recent changes,

beginning with the appointment of Dr. Steve Lee as our new interim Residency Program Director effective September. Dr. Lee previously served as Program Director for UCLA Radiation Oncology residency and Medical Director of Long Beach VA Radiation Oncology. He brings tremendous vision and resources that will help maximize our Department’s potential.

We recently bid farewell to Dr. Hanako Farol, who relocated to Kaiser Permanente LA, as well as our graduates Drs. Daniel Bourgeois, Randy Wei, Samir Laoui, and Mr. Alfredo Banda. We welcome our new residents, Drs. Pericles Ioannides (PGY-2) and Wenbo Wei (physics).

Our faculty remain active in scholarly activity. Dr. Varun Sehgal served as an ABR Medical Physics oral examiner in Louisville, KY, in July. As President of the Radiation Research Society, Dr. Charles Limoli will be the first to bring their annual meeting to Latin America in October, where Dr. Munjal

Acharya will also be presenting. And once again, our department will be well-represented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in September and the Radiosurgical Society Meeting in November.

Faculty and residents from all teaching sites (UCI, LB Memorial, LBVA) convened at another successful Biennial Meeting at LBVA in May. These meetings allow us to align our goals and objectives in the best interests of our residency. We look forward to our next meeting in Fall, which will be hosted right here at UCI.

We hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and we welcome your comments. We thank our patients, colleagues, and alumni for supporting us in our long term goal of providing Orange County and Southern California with the most advanced radiation therapy technology and world class care.

The Anti-Cancer Challenge

Department members participated in the Anti-Cancer Challenge organized by the Chao Cancer Center (pictured above). The Department formed a team aptly called RADONC FREE RADICALS to raise money for this cause. We thank all donors for their contributions, and would also like to recognize Dr. Varun Sehgal (team captain), and the Bosch, Bradford, Dietrich, Orlowski and Pinedo families for joining the festivities at Angel Stadium on June 10-11.

Congrats to our LBVA adjunct faculty member, Dr. Warren Inouye, for receiving the honorable ARRO (Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology) 2016-2017 Educator of the Year Award!

Kudos to Dr. Sehgal!

Dr. Varun Sehgal has been elected as Secretary of the Southern California Chapter of the AAPM (American Association of Physicists in Medicine), beginning his three-year term on January 1, 2018.

We’d also like to recognize Dr. Sehgal and his fellow researchers (JH Keyak, TS Kaneko, & HB Skinner), who were issued another patent for radioactive bone cement. Congrats!

Farewell Dr. Farol

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Hanako Farol for her contributions and service to our Department. After over 2.5 years in our

Department, Dr. Farol has decided to return to her residency alma mater, Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles, in order to remain closer to home. We truly appreciate all your hard work—UCI will miss you!

Dosimetry Training Program Earns Accreditation

Our Medical Dosimetry Training Program received provisional accreditation in April by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Full accreditation is expected to be granted given continued successful efforts of the program over the course of this academic year. The Department thanks all those involved in the accreditation process.

ASTRO 2017: Honoring Dr. Martin Colman

The annual UCI Radiation Oncology reunion will convene again at this year’s ASTRO in San Diego, CA on Saturday, September 23 at the Harbor House restaurant. This year, we honor Dr. Martin Colman, the founder of our department, who officially retired in August 2017 at the University of Texas.

Congratulations Limoli Lab

The Limoli Lab recently received these grants:

Smith was also granted a position on a T32 stem cell training grant, run by Leslie Thompson & Peter Donovan, to analyze cranially transplanted neuronal stem cells in irradiated & chemotherapy-treated brains. Congrats Class of 2017!

The Department graduated 4 trainees in June. Their notable accomplishments were celebrated at a festive luncheon on Saturday, June 3rd at Yard House in Newport Beach. Best of luck, and you’ll all be missed!

Dr. Randy Wei served as Chief Resident for two years, and has accepted a position at our affiliate site, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center Radiation Oncology.

Despite his short time with us as a transfer, Dr. Daniel Bourgeois also served as Chief in his final year. He accepted a position at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Louisiana, his home state.

Dr. Samir Laoui successfully completed his two-year medical physics residency and has relocated to start a new role as a Medical Physicist at Central Care Cancer Center in Missouri.

Alfredo Banda successfully completed our newly accredited medical dosimetry program, and has recently accepted a full-time position at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, where he previously worked as a radiation therapist.

Dr. Pericles Ioannides, PGY-2, is our newest resident. He was born in Philadelphia and grew up on the Greek island of Cyprus. He earned his Bachelor’s in Neuroscience at Indiana University while working in a neuroscience lab. He earned his M.D. from Indiana University and traveled to the Blackfeet Native Americans in Montana to provide medical aid. He completed his PGY-1 at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He has publications in peer-reviewed journals, such as The International Journal of Particle Therapy, concerning the use of proton and x-ray therapy on paraganglioma tumors, and the European Journal of Neuroscience concerning the effects of acute stress on the amygdala. He is happy to have escaped the Wisconsin cold to enjoy the sunshine in Orange County.

Alumni Spotlight: Rebuilding New Orleans

Dr. Wenbo Wei is our newest medical physics resident. He earned his Ph.D. in Biophysics at Ohio State University, with a focus on MRI. He stayed at OSU as a post-doctoral researcher for 2 years after graduation to continue his research. Dr. Wei completed 7 years of hands-on research imaging experience with both a Philips 3T and 7T MRI scanner. His current research focuses on musculoskeletal projects such as knee osteoarthritis early diagnosis with molecular MRI imaging, articular cartilage defect size estimation with MRI, and ACL graft metabolic activity assessment with PET-MRI technique. He has publications on oncology including predicting metastatic potential of ocular melanoma using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI. He recently finished the CAMPEP-accredited medical physics program at University of Chicago in 2016.

Robert Sanford, Ph.D., MBA Chief of Physics—Radiation Oncology University Medical Center, New Orleans

After completing my residency in 2001 and working as a junior faculty at UCI, I made the difficult decision to move to Tulane University Cancer Center in New Orleans to initiate the first IMRT

program in the region. Since UCI was one of the first centers in the U.S. to offer IMRT, my residency provided me great training in what was then a cutting-edge treatment modality. Along with Tulane clinical duties, I was simultaneously providing physics services at the nearby state-owned Charity Hospital and working on the clinical implementation of an early Monte Carlo radiation dose calculation algorithm.

Everything came to a crashing halt in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast and the New Orleans levee system failed. Like much of the city, Tulane and Charity hospitals flooded. The ground floor of Tulane Cancer Center took on 1 to 2 feet of water, while Charity’s department - housed in the basement - was completely submerged.

Tulane relocated its cancer services to an abandoned radiation therapy facility about 40 miles north of New Orleans. Trailers were brought in and furnished with chemotherapy chairs, and I led the effort to revive the abandoned radiation equipment. Then all efforts concentrated on redesigning and refurbishing the downtown campus. About 1 year after flooding, Tulane Cancer Center reopened in its original New Orleans location.

A new $1.1 billion University Medical Center (UMC) New Orleans facility now replaces the former Charity Hospital. Until June of this year, I served as Chief of Physics at both UMC and Tulane, when I moved to UMC fulltime. The new facility is keeping me quite busy with research and planning of a recently announced $70 million proton center addition.

I cannot overstate the value of my physics residency at UCI. My training and experience there continue to serve me well to this day, and I always think very fondly of the people and my time there.

Achieving Precision Radiotherapy with DIBH

The Department of Radiation

Oncology employs the Deep

Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH)

technique for delivering external beam

radiation therapy to patients with left-

sided breast cancers. The underlying

rationale for this approach is that by

taking a deep breath, the heart is

pushed away from the left breast.

Thus, delivering the radiation while

the patient is maintaining a deep

inspiration breath hold leads to

reduced radiation dose to the heart,

potentially resulting in fewer long-

term cardiac complications. At UC

Irvine Radiation Oncology, this is

accomplished using the Align-RT

system (Fig. 1).

Align-RT employs three cameras to

perform real-time 3D tracking of the

patient’s surface. The cameras

monitor thousands of points on the

patient’s skin, and can detect any

motion as the patient holds their

breath, with sub-millimeter accuracy.

The system will automatically detect if

the patient moves out of position or

the patient is unable to hold their

breath, and the radiation is turned off

instantly. A preliminary review of our

patient data has shown

a significant decrease

in both the mean heart

radiation dose as well

as the maximum heart

radiation dose. This

novel data was

presented by our

residents and faculty at

our annual ASTRO

meeting (D. Bourgeois,

P. Daroui et al.,

process of publication. Patient

compliance has been good and

treatment delivery times have also

been clinically acceptable.

Muthana Al-Ghazi, Ph.D. Clinical Professor & Director of Medical Physics

Earlier this year we

said good bye to

our former physics

resident, Dr. Samir

Laoui. He

completed the

program and

obtained a position in Missouri in

private practice with a group headed

by Carlos Perez’ daughter. Shortly

thereafter, we welcomed Dr. Wenbo

Wei to fill the vacancy left by Samir.

Wenbo comes to us from Ohio State

University where he had been a

postdoctoral fellow in MRI imaging

research.

The physics residency program is

coming up for its 10th year

accreditation cycle. Hard to believe!

The application was submitted in a

timely fashion thanks to the help of

Dr. Varun Sehgal and Michelle Leung.

We are looking forward to the site

visit later this year.

The medical dosimetry program

gained provisional accreditation by

the Joint Review Committee on

Education in Radiologic Technology

(JRCERT). Dr. Eduardo Roa led this

effort. We intend to build upon this

success and make the accreditation

final early next year by addressing

the JRCERT recommendations. Our

dosimetry student, Alfredo Banda,

successfully completed the program

and returned to his former

institution, Torrance Memorial

Hospital.

William (Bill) Braggins, a senior

dosimetrist for over a decade,

decided to start enjoying a well-

earned retirement in April. We

welcomed Maxim (Max) Baldytchev

as a locum dosimetrist for the

summer months and Robert

Levesque who filled the Department

manager position.

In the era of digital imaging, no one

seems to remember film. However,

on August 21st everyone appeared to

have re-embraced this obsolete

technology. I saw some of us

scrambling to obtain a few pieces,

cut them to size and stack them for

viewing the partial eclipse. It was

spectacular. It is living proof that the

laws of physics are alive and well and

faithfully obeyed throughout the

universe; whether we are examining

the depths of the nucleus, the human

body, the solar system or the far

reaches of the universe. I admit my

bias. I am not the only one who holds

this opinion. Shakespeare said it best

over four centuries ago in Macbeth

II:iii:55, “We delight in physics”.

I hope all of you and your loved ones

have had a good summer. We look

forward to welcoming all of you to

the Alumni reception that is being

organized by Dr. Randy Wei, a former

resident, who is now practicing at

Long Beach Memorial Medical

Center. It is being held in San Diego

on Saturday September 23rd, 2017

the evening prior to the start of the

ASTRO meeting. I am sure Randy has

e-mailed the details to all of you. He

is a great organizer and will put on a

most enjoyable gathering.

Please welcome our newest adjunct

faculty, Dr. Warren S. Inouye. Dr.

Inouye is a staff physician at the

Long Beach VA Hospital. He has

been mentoring our residents since

March 2016. Prior to coming to the

VA, Dr. Inouye was formerly CAPT

Inouye USN MC and has recently

retired from over 27 years in active

duty service.

During his military service, CAPT

Inouye has served in many

distinguished and interesting duties

including Diving/Undersea Medical

Officer for the Naval Special Warfare

Community, Flight Surgeon for the

US Marine Corps Harrier Training

Squadron, US Navy Medical

Exchange Officer to the Royal Navy,

United Kingdom, Medical Officer for

the Navy SEALs during Operation

Desert Shield/Storm, Medical

Operations Officer for US Forces

Japan during the Fukushima Daiichi

Nuclear Disaster and Specialty

Advisor for Radiation Oncology to

the US Navy Surgeon General. His

personal medals include the Navy

Achievement Medal, Navy

Commendation Medal, and the

Meritorious Service Medal.

Dr. Inouye received his residency

training at the LAC+USC Medical

Center and underwent a

Brachytherapy Fellowship at Long

Beach Memorial. After his formal

training, CAPT Inouye became staff

medical officer at the Naval Medical

Center, San Diego, where he served

in leadership roles of Division Head

of Radiation Oncology, Interim

Chairman for the Department of

Radiology, Liaison Offer for VA/

NMCSD Radiation Oncology

Services, and Specialty Leader of

Radiation Oncology. During his time

of active duty, his peers honored

CAPT Inouye with the “Master

Clinician Award” and his patients

honored him as “Top Ten Medical

Specialist” in all of US Navy

Medicine.

Since being at the VA Hospital, Dr.

Inouye has “hit the ground running”

and made a positive impact on our

residents. He was recently awarded

the ARRO 2016-2017 Educator of

the Year Award. We are fortunate

to have Dr. Inouye on our teaching

staff and we look forward to many

years of future residency training at

the VA.

Robert comes to us with over 20

years of healthcare experience. He

has held management positions in the

departments of Radiation Oncology at

both Palomar Medical Center &

Glendale Adventist Medical

Center. Robert also worked as the

Director of Radiation Oncology at Los

Alamitos Medical Center for over 10

years. Robert received his

undergraduate degree in Radiation

Oncology from California State

University Long Beach, and earned his

MBA from La Sierra University in

Riverside. Robert lives locally in

Huntington Beach and enjoys reading,

golfing, and standup paddle boarding

in his free time.
