It sets up an organized way to ensure things get done, missions are accomplished, and who is responsible for doing what. On board a ship, whether military or civilian, there is a very definite hierarchy of command, starting with the captain or master of the ship. His word is what IS going to be done. There is no democratic process for voting! In an organization like our Boat Club, organized to bring together people of like interests (model RC boating), the organization is a bit looser. In such organizations, there are three possibilities: a well-defined mix of chiefs and Indians, too many chiefs and not enough Indians, and too many Indians and not enough chiefs. With the proper mix, things generally work better and more smoothly. With either of the latter examples, problems begin to occur. Over time, an organization can shift and get out of kilter for a number of reasons. The St Louis Admirals is moving toward the latter mix, and this is not a good thing. being a chief. But whatever role you play in the Club, please keep giving everyone your support, especially for those who are taking on more of the duties of running things. Hopefully the weather will start to improve, get warmer, not be raining, etc., etc.

Then we can get to doing more of the fun things of model boating. See you at the pond…… Commodore Jim

MO., and led the members and guests of whom 16 were present, in the Pledge of Allegiance. Report from Homeport: George Kirby received a thank you note from the Heart Association for the donation in memoriam for Alden Clark. Fleet Information: Secretary’s Report: There was no meeting in March. The club has not received any paperwork that we have been registered nor insurance documents at this time. The checks have been cashed. The secretary will call to see when we will get those items. Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer George Kirby gave his report. Mail Call: Commodore Jim received 3 emails:

1. Aaron Richardson is organizing an event to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Belle of Louisville this fall in Louisville and is looking for members who have river boats or tow boats to participate. If interested see www.centennialfestivalofriverboats.com or contact Aaron at

[email protected] 2. [email protected] writes that he has a modified Dumas PT boat, Shelly Foss tugboat and a

WWII German submarine for sale. Contact Commodore Jim if interested. More info elsewhere in the newsletter.

3. Helena Hagedorn from AAA is updating a 2014 calendar of events and requested the dates for the club’s 2014 Regatta. Commodore Jim will provide.

Fleet Information: Boat House status: Commodore Jim talked with Jason White. They decided that due to the uncertainty of completion of repairs after the recent fire, our Boat House sail date would be postponed from May to June 2. The Regatta will be held at the Boat House on September 27-28.

2. 2014 Regatta: Club Member Kerk Kerkman volunteered to be chairman of the Regatta. There will be a meeting with Kerk and members who have planned and worked on previous Regattas. One item for consideration is to have judging and awards on Saturday and free running on Sunday. Also, Father Tom suggested T-shirts as a possible award replace plaque awards. 3. Picnic: Due to recent surgery to Mrs. O’Dell-Duncan, the picnic will have to be at some other location. Due to the few people who attended the last picnic, there is some question as to whether the club members even want a picnic. Commodore Jim will investigate having it at St. Ferdinand Park. 4. Green Tree Festival: Mike Alligood was contacted by the president of the Kirkwood Sailing Club about again participating in the festival in Kirkwood in September. 5. Club meetings: Father Tom suggested that business portion of meeting be shortened and more time put on displays and programs in order to draw more members and increase attendance. Commodore Jim said that he would try putting the displays and programs at the front and hold the business part of the meeting at the end. All Hands on Deck: 1. Paul Kirby had a wooden puzzle kit for the Black Pearl pirate ship that was nicely done. 2. Jane Rivers-Chapman had an old catalog for Chris Craft Boats. 3. Dave St Clair showed model of American Enterprise, which he has started. The hull has been skinned. He also pointed out that one of the first things he does is to create a stand to support the hull. Also after he has the hull framed he installs the running gear, since it is easier to do then rather than after the hull is skinned. 4. Raffle: George Kirby and John Ziemer won gift cards for Mark Twain Hobbies. Skipper’s Tales: Commodore Jim had another list of nautical terms for us to guess what they meant. The meeting was adjourned at 9:10pm. Three boats are being offered for sale: a Dumas Shelly Foss tug, a German Type IX U-boat surface running sub, and a Dumas PT boat. The photos show the boats. The owner wants to sell all three plus radio gear and parts as a package for $420. The tug looks very nice, as does the U-boat, but it is non-diving. The PT lacks detailing. The boats are complete with motors and running gear. Any interested Club Members should contact Commodore Jim at (636) 271-8316 or [email protected] We may be able to group some members and make the purchase among several of us. More photos and information are available if interested. The owner also has radios, but they are 72 MHz and not 75 MHz

The vessel is a high speed catamaran built by the Tasmanian shipbuilder Incat. History Hai Xia Hao was constructed for Bay Ferries as The Cat and operated seasonally in from 2002–2005 in international service from May to October across the Gulf of Maine between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Bar Harbor, Maine. The vessel replaced the Incat 046 which had inaugurated high speed ferry services in North America on this route in 1997, using the marketing name "The Cat".

Starting in the winter of 2003–2004, Bay Ferries began to operate the vessel as a wet-lease charter during the off-season for the Gulf of Maine service, when the INCAT 046 had previously been laid up. From November 2003 to April 2004, The Cat was operated by Bay Ferries for Bahama Florida Express, which was an inaugural high speed ferry service between Port Everglades, Florida and the Bahamas. From December 2004 to April 2005, Bay Ferries operated The Cat between Port of Spain and Scarborough in Trinidad and Tobago for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. This same route was served by The Cat from November 2005 to May 2006 and INCAT 046 filled in from May to October. After the 2005 demise of the Yarmouth-Bar Harbor route's competitor, Scotia Prince Cruises, using the M/V Scotia Prince between Yarmouth-Portland, Maine, Bay Ferries secured this additional route for The Cat beginning in May 2006. For that season, the The Cat operated from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor on Mondays to Thursdays and from Yarmouth to the Ocean Gateway International Marine Passenger Terminal in Portland on Fridays to Sundays. On December 18, 2009 Bay Ferries announced that it was ending its Gulf of Maine service from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor and Portland after the Government of Nova Scotia ended the subsidies, resulting in approximately 120 jobs being lost. Bay Ferries had been seeking approximately $6.0 million for the 2010 operating season but the provincial government declined, citing financial difficulty. In 2011 The Cat was purchased by Fujian Cross Strait Ferry. The vessel has been renamed Hai Xia Hao and now operates between Taichung and Pingtan Island. Vessel characteristics Hai Xia Hao is a 98-metre (322 ft) vessel built by InCat Australia in Hobart, Tasmania in 2002 as The Cat. Hai Xia Hao is constructed from marine grade aluminium alloys. Each water-borne hull is subdivided into multiple watertight compartments connected by an arched bridging structure with a central forward hull above the smooth water line. Each water-borne hull carries two engines which drive water jets mounted on the transom. Vehicles are stowed in and between both waterborne hulls in a configuration of rising and descending decks which load from a single level transfer bridge at the stern. The main passenger deck is immediately above the vehicle decks and consists of a cafe, gift shop, children's play area and passenger seating lounges, as well as an outside observation deck that runs the width of the ship at the stern. The passenger seating lounges have overhead television monitors which play movies, or television broadcasts, as well as a continuously updated map showing the vessel's GPS coordinates. Sisterships Hai Xia Hao is one of six 98 metre catamarans built by Incat. The other vessels are; Normandie Express, T&T Spirit, Milenium Dos, HSV 2 Swift and Milenium Tres
