GABION BOXES NEW GABION BOXES NEW GABION BOXES EXISTING LAWN METHOD STATEMENT FOR REHABILITATION OF RIVER BANK AT SILVERSTREAMS; PLETTENBERG BAY Herewith a summary of planned construction activities to rehabilitate the Keurbooms river bank at Silverstreams development. Temporary measures: 1. Excavate a level working platform at the low tide water level mark; 2. Place a "Rockgrip" layer on the invert of the excavation, this will ensure that the proceeding layer will be fixed together to provide adequate stability. The "Rockgrip" layer will have a coated diamond mesh fixed to the last 2 m, to allow the "Rockgrip" to be fixed to the Reno mattresses; 3. Place Reno mattress to form the toe of the structure, to prevent undermining of the embankment; 4. Place 2 No. rows of 1 x 1 x 1 m sand bags along the low tide water level contour, to form the leading edge of protection against erosion; 5. Place 1 No. row at the back of the excavation, this will form an anchor for the sand fill which will follow; 6. Place a geotextile layer to form a container between the front row and back row of sand bags. This will form a boundary into which sand can be placed; 7. Pump the sandy material that has been eroded from the river into the geotextile container. The sand must be compacted to ensure stability of the embankment; 8. Place a "Rockgrip" layer on the crest of the first layer, this will ensure that the proceeding layer will be fixed together to provide adequate stability. The "Rockgrip" layer will have a coated diamond mesh fixed to the last 2 m, to allow the "Rockgrip" to be fixed to the Reno mattresses; 9. Repeat steps 4 - 8 until the top of the embankments are reached, take note that each layer should be offset by the distance necessary to shape the embankment to a natural slope; 10. Once all the layers have been completed, then sandbags should be placed on the steps, they should be filled with sand and the sand bags should be shaped to form a smooth transition between the layers; and 11. Geotextile should be placed on the face of the newly shaped embankment, from the bottom Reno mattress to the top of the embankment. Permanent measures: 12. A layer of Reno mattresses should be placed on top of the geotextile and anchored vertically into the back of the embankment; 13. Organic material, Salt marsh, should be placed on the Reno mattresses in the inter-tidal zone; and 14.
