Water Resources are source of water that are potentially useful.

97% of the water on the earth is salt water and only 3% of water is fresh water.

There are two types of Sources of water.

Water Resources

Surface Water Ground Water

Waters of all sources, flowing in streams or

other natural channels, whether perennial or

intermittent, floodwaters and of lakes, ponds, and springs on the surface”.

Ponds■ A pond is a body of standing water, either natural or

artificial, that is usually smaller than lake.■ They may arise naturally in floodplains as a part of

river.■ A few animals also make their home in ponds

including alligators.■ Ponds are Frequently Human Constructed.

Lake– A natural large sized depression formed within the surface

of earth, when gets filled up with water is known as lake.

– Larger and older lakes provide comparatively purer water than the smaller and newer lakes.

– Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for agriculture and industrial purpose.

• Most lakes have at least one natural outflow in the form of a river or stream.• Water temperature in lakes during summer

months is not uniform from top to bottom. There are three distinct layers. The top layer stays warm at 18.8-24.5degree C.The middle layer stays at 7.4-18.8degree C.the bottom layer is the coldest, staying at around 4.0-7.4degree C.• Even in cold climates, most lakes are large

enough so that they don’t freeze solid.

Streams In hilly regions, generally small amount of water

runs off towards the earth. Thus small run offs are known as streams.

These streams feed their water to lakes or rivers. Quantity of water available in them is very small

and sometimes they may get dry.

• THE STUDY OF STREAMS IS KNOWN AS SURFACE HYDROLOGY.

• STREAMS TYPICALLY DERIVE MOST OF THEIR WATER FROM PRECIPITATION IN THE FORM OF RAIN AND SNOW.

• STREAMS CARRY MOST OF THE WATER FROM THE LAND TO SEA AND THUS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE WATER CYCLE.

• STREAMS ARE A MAJOR SOURCES OF WATER WASTE DISPOSAL.

RIVERS A river is a natural flowing water source, usually

freshwater flowing towards an ocean, sea, lakes or another rivers.

Some rivers have lots of small channels that continually split and join. These are called braided rivers.

Braided rivers are usually wide but shallow.

• Some rivers only contain water during wet seasons. These are called ephemeral rivers.

• The quality of water obtained from rivers is generally not reliable as it contains large amounts of sand, split and a lot of suspended matter.

• Rivers are classified in two types

Perennial RiversNon-Perennial Rivers

Page 11: Types of water sources .....in one ppt #### just click!!

• Perennial Rivers:- Those rivers in which water is available throughtout the year.Perennial rivers are also known as permanent rivers. These rivers are usually found in regions with humid climate.

• Non-Perennial Rivers:- Those rivers in which water is not available at all time.Non perennial rivers are also known as periodic rivers. These rivers are usually found in regions with arid climate.
