What is diabetes?

• Diabetes mellitus as a set of metabolic disorders. Metabolism is the process by which useful energy is attained from the consumed food. Any abnormal chemical reactions in the body can hinder this process. These abnormal conditions are called metabolic disorders.

Causes

• There are number of factors can cause diabetes. These factors depend upon the diabetes type & the individual. Two different forms of diabetes are commonly observed. They are Type 1 diabetes & Type 2 diabetes. Both the types have different causes.

Types of Diabetes

• Diabetes commonly refers to diabetes mellitus. A rare kind of diabetes, known as diabetes insipidus also exists. The most commonly seen form of this medical condition is diabetes mellitus. The differentiating point between them is that diabetes mellitus is the condition of high glucose levels in the blood whereas diabetes insipidus is the condition which relates to the inability of the kidney to conserve water.

Type - 1 Diabetes

• The Type 1 diabetes is related to insulin deficiency. This is characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. The disease can be fatal if left unrecognized. Control of the disease is brought out by insulin supplementation.

Type-2-Diabetes

• t is estimated that almost 90% of diabetic cases falls into the type 2 category. Diabetes Type 2 can be either due to insufficient insulin production or insulin resistant. Due to this reason, this diabetes is also called Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM).
