Die straat lyk nou weer mooi,” het Pieter dank- baar gesê. Die motorhuis, wat onwettig be- woon is, het bure vir jare die harnas ingejaag weens die vullis, stank en ook ongewenste elemente wat daar rondgehang het. Die Kuilsrivier-polisie het deur- lopend inligting oor dwelmbedry- wighede by dié perseel ontvang. Pieter het gesê hulle hoop nou die voorkoms van ongewenste elemen- te in die gebied sal iets van die ver- lede wees. “Nou wil ons net vir die Stad vra om die lang gras daar langsaan te sny.” Inwoners het vir jare by die Stad Kaapstad klagtes ingedien oor die perseel, waarna die Stad ’n kennis- gewing vir die sloping van die ge- bou aan die eienaar, Rikus Serdyn, gegee het. TygerBurger het Augustus verle- de jaar oor die kennisgewing berig. Die kennisgewing het vereis dat die gebou gesloop word, maar weens die onwilligheid van die besetters om die perseel te ontruim, kon Ser- dyn nie met die sloping voortgaan nie. Die probleem met die onwettige besetting van die motorhuis het in 2007 begin, nadat die hoofhuis ge- sloop is. ’n Gesin het toe hul intrek in die bouvallige motorhuis ge- neem. Serdyn het nadat TygerBurger hom oor die inwoners se klagtes ge- kontak het, belowe dat hy so gou moontlik aan die probleem sou aan- dag skenk. Die rede vir die vertra- ging in die opruiming van die per- seel, was omdat Serdyn eers ’n hof- bevel moes bekom om die onwettige bewoners uit te sit. Die hof het be- veel dat die besetters die perseel op 31 Oktober moes ontruim, maar hulle het geweier. Serdyn moes toe nog stappe doen wat twee ekstra we- ke geduur het. Hy kon dus eers ver- lede week voortgaan met die uitset- ting van die besetters. Daar was reeds Maandag stoot- skrapers op die erf besig. Serdyn het Freddie Steyn van die FPS-prokureursfirma bedank vir hul goeie werk met die oplos van dié ingewikkelde probleem. Luidens die Stad Kaapstad se ver- ordening oor probleem-geboue, kan die Stad ondersoek instel ná klagtes en aan die eienaar kennis gee om sy huis in orde te kry. Dit is weer tyd vir die gewildejaarlikse Liggieboomfees van dieskool envanjaar sal daar indieplekvan die vuurwerke, groot vermaakin die vorm van ’n gospelkonsertgeniet kan word. Die liggieboom-fees, ’n jaarlikse instelling, is dieJan Krielskool se grootse geldinsa-melingsinisiatief vir die jaar. Diefees lok elke jaar meer as 1 000 be-soekers.
Dr. Fanie Herholdt, fondsbe-stuurder van die Jan Kriel-insti-tuut, sê die Liggieboomfees is al vir14 jaar ’n hoogtepunt vir baie inwo-ners van Kuilsrivier. Dié skool hetgehoor gegee aan van die inwonersse ontevredenheid met die vuur-werke en het dus hierdie jaar be-sluit om die vuurwerkvertoningmet die gospelkonsert en Kersmu-sieksamesang te vervang. Herholdtsê die beroemde liggieboom – watdie ster van die aand is – is verledeweek voorberei vir die geleentheid.“Op die laaste Saterdag van No-vembermaand elke jaar kom ’nmengelmoes van mense rondomhierdie spesiale boom bymekaarom Kersliedere saam te sing. Metdie sing van “Stille Nag” word dui-sende liggies in die boom aangeska-kel en almal se kerse brand om dieboodskap van hoop vir die wêreldte vier.”
Die Jan Krielskool bied onderrigaan kinders wat leerbeperkings on-dervind en het kinders van reg oordie Wes-Kaap en Kaapse Skierei-
land. Hulle probeer hul leuse, “Gee’n kind ’n kans” gestand doen endie geld wat met die fees ingesamelword, is integraal tot hierdie doel.

Vanjaar se gospelkonsert enKersmusiek sluit optredes in vanLiesl Marx, Alban Peterson, Hilan-di du Toit en Conf8, asook die kin-ders van die Jan Krielskool.

Liesl, sanger, aktrise en regis-seur, is pas terug ná solo-optredesin België en Nederland.
Hilandi, sê Herholdt, is ’n bekwa-me kitaarspeler, energieke sanglei-er en saam met die groep CONF8behartig hy die musiekregie en sa-mesang van die konsert.
“Hierdie optredes gaan almalwat hier onder die bome kom piek-niek hou, asook al die sensitiewetroeteldiere in Kuilsrivier, beslisin die Kersfeesstemming bring.”Die toegang vir alle piekniekgan-gers tot die Liggieboomfees op Sa-terdag 26 November is R30 vir voet-gangers (kleuters is gratis) of R100per voertuig met tot ses passasiers.Hekke open om 17:00 en daar salvoldoende gratis en veilige parke-ring binne die terrein verskafword.

Een van Kuilsrivier se bekendste bome, die Liggieboom by JanKrielskool, word hier deur Robert Brophy, Siya Mazwi en Wellington Gonyana, werkers van Adenco Construction, vir die fees op26 November voorberei. Mense oral in SuidAfrika en Namibiëborg (R60) jaarliks uit liefde vir Jan Kriel se kinders ’n liggie wataan hierdie uitsonderlike boom gehang word. Die Stad Kaapstad se fokus wat betref on-kruidbeheer en die optel van rommel, is ophoofroetes en prioriteitsgebiede.

In reaksie hierop het subraadbestuurderJan Brand geantwoord dat een of ander pro-gram tog in dié verband moet bestaan.
“As daar nie so ’n program is nie, maakdit ons belaglik in die oë van die publiek,”het Brand gesê.
Anneke Benskin (gebiedsbestuurder virwyk vyf) sê vir die huidige begrotingsjaar isR2,1 miljoen beskikbaar, “wat ons in staatstel om parke pro-aktief te sny, maar nie inwoongebiede nie,” sê sy.
Raadslede Andrea Crous en Brendan van
der Merwe het albei skerp gereageer in diéverband. “Ek is nie tevrede daarmee dat grasnet gesny word in gebiede waar dit aange-meld word nie. Daar móét ’n program weessodat mense kan weet wanneer die gras (inwatter gebied) gesny word,” het Crous gesê.
Volgens De Wet vind onkruidverwyderingtans plaas langs Jip de Jager-, Carl Cronjéry-laan en Van Riebeeckshof. Benskin sê diestad sal oor die vakansieseisoen van kon-trakteurs se dienste gebruik maak in dié ver-band. De Wet het gesê inwoners wat verlangdat gras in gebiede gesny word, kan hom inkennis stel.

Tom sê UnLtd South Africa vind, befondsen ondersteun sosiale entrepreneurs, vol-gens ’n model wat in Brittanje ontwikkel isen reeds in Indië en Thailand geld.
Die projek in Macassar het ook plaaslikewerkskepping en opheffingswerk in die ge-meenskap gebring deur die aanstelling vanvakleerlinge.
Proudly Macassar help dan hierdie vak-leerlinge om hul eie ondernemings te begin.Daar word ook sessies aangebied in lewens-vaardighede vir werklose jongmense in diegemeenskap.
Die laaste twee jaar is gebruik om die pot-tebakkery se projekte te verfyn. Volgens Jo-han is die udu-trom ’n tradisionele Nigerieseinstrument. “Die woord ‘udu’ beteken letter-lik waterpot. Mense vra my dikwels waaromdie trom so baie soos ’n blompot lyk,” verdui-delik Johan. “Eintlik lyk dit soos ’n blompotwant daar is gate bo en aan die kant. As daarop die gate geslaan word, skep dit die won-derlikste klanke.”
Die fluite wat by die projek gemaak wordverskil ook van die Westerse fluite. Johan sêdie fluite het nou ’n enkele groot gat aan diekant en note word geskep deur jou hand oordie gat te skuif. “Hierdie tipe musiek is evo-katief en ietwat melankolies, maar maklikom te speel.”

Just in time for ChristmasDESIREÉ RORKE
The Uitsig Animal Rescue Centrelaunched its 2012 calendar justin time for Christmas.
The first of its kind for this organ-isation, this glossy calendar depictsthe work of the organisation, with14 brilliantly composed pictures ofsomeof the rescuedanimals it hous-es. The idea was hatched in October
2010 when photographer AndrewWaltman heard of the organisationand joined as a volunteer. Assistedby his niece Tracy Waltman, theyset off on a seven-month adventurein January 2011, to capture the spir-it of these animals on film.
“We shot on two locations, theUitsig farm and beach, and spent lit-erally hours on one photo, to getthat perfect shot,” Waltman says.
In the end there were hundreds of
photos to pick from, and accordingto founder Heidi Swart, this was themost challenging part of theproject.
“We eventually put all the photosto vote and the staff and volunteersat Uitsig chose the 14 pictures thatappear in the final product,” shesays. The calendar will go on saleat pet shops and vet practices aswell as the Uitsig website for R100a piece.

Horse abused to deathJANA BEKKER
A horse owner, charged with contraven-ing the Animal Protection Act in what isdescribedasoneof theworst casesof ani-mal abuse in years, was granted R3 000bail in a Bellville court last week.
The wounds on the horse were so exten-sive the animal couldn’t stand.
The animal, named Mr Lonely, was dehy-drated due to fatigue and in severe shockand trauma.
He was lying prostrate on the ground, par-tially covered by a blanket, his testicles bad-ly swollen and with open welts.
The horse couldn’t stand as his hindquar-ters were giving way and he died shortly af-ter being found.
Megan White of the Cart Horse ProtectionAssociation last week said the associationwill call for the maximum sentence to be im-posed on the owner and another two adultmales from Freedom Farm. They appearedin court on Friday 17 November on charges
of cruelty and abuse.The horse was found after a patrol inspec-
tor of the association received an urgent callfrom a Freedom Farm resident, informingher about a horse lying down in the field be-hind his property.
“On arrival, she was totally unpreparedfor the shocking scene,” White said.
The horse was immediately injected witha strong painkiller and the inspector re-quested help from three bystanders to carryhim to the horsebox.
En route to the Epping Clinic, the associa-tion’s consultant veterinarian was called toassist and treat the horse. The vet stated thecondition of Mr Lonely was likely caused byhuman cruelty and abuse, and that the prog-nosis was poor.
White says witnesses stated they had seenMr Lonely pulling a cart driven by the own-er and two youths over a period of threedays.
“They had been driving recklessly aroundthe farm for long periods, beating the horsewith a stick and a rubber hose.”

The top three finalists of the SA PopIdols 2011 competition, winner Davevan Vuuren, Crushanda Forbes andMark Haze, will perform alongside DrVictor and the Rasta Rebels and come-dian Kurt Schoonraad at the concert.
The Mayoral Special Fund is theCity’s charity fund to assist victims ofemergencies or disasters, individualsor organisations experiencing hard-ships, and to support causes that pro-mote the City’s values.
Executive Mayor Patricia de Lillesays the concert will boost the City’sefforts to assist Capetonians goingthrough difficult times.

Free health checks a hit with residentsCARMEN JACOBS
After a great demand for more healthscreening testing days the Kingdom Tab-ernacle Ministries (KTM) will host a big-ger event featuring more extra activities.
The KTM church based in Kuils River host-ed a successful free health screening day inHighbury earlier this year.
To accommodate even more com-munity members, the Desmond Tu-tu Foundation will supply doublethe number of health officials to dothe testing this time around.
Past Jonathan Peters from KTMsays: “This will be a free Christmashealth check with complimentsfrom KTM.”
The health screening day willprovide information specifically re-lated to men’s health issues by fea-turing a male nurse. “He will becovering the importance of screen-ing for lifestyle diseases such as hy-pertension and diabetes as well asprostate enlargement and testicu-lar cancer as well as educating ondeveloping healthy lifestyles.”
All men are urged to attend thisimportant session.
Peters says the church is committed toaiding people in living healthy lives.
“Early detection of disease throughscreening programmes is vital to reduce itsdevastating effects.”
The day will cater for the local youth witha youth empowerment session and also pro-vide an opportunity for youth to get theirhealth checked. Screening tests will include
blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index,TB, HIV, sexually transmitted infections andprevention of mother to child transmissions.
“For many people a diagnosis either comestoo late or for others it is a life changing event,”says Peters.
He adds the spiritual and physical health ofthe community is a strong focus of the church.
The registration for and actual free screen-ing health checks will be done from 10:00-16:00 on 26 November on the corners of Muirand Highbury roads, Kuils River. The sessionfor the men will start at 11:00 and the youthsession at 12:30.

Feels like highway robberyIn answer to my question, “What’s the diffe-rence between good old fashioned highwayrobbery and the proposed new toll roads?”I was pleased to receive replies from the De-partment of Labour, the Minister of Policeand Minister of Justice explaining to me thatit was all a part of the government’s job crea-tion scheme.
Apparently, the unemployment rate forhighway robbers is much higher than the na-tional average in other robbery professions.
Except for the occasional car hi-jacking, itwas felt that this part of the robbery industryneeded to be jacked-up (pardon the pun) ashighway robbery has been in steady declinesince the boom days of Dick Turpin & Co.
I might as well accept this unnecessaryand costly irritation as calmly as I can andtry not to look them in the eye as they arerobbing me.

Scam could haveended in disasterTuesday (15 November) at 13:30 I wasdriving inBellville onDurbanRoad in thedirection of the N1 highway.
At a red robot, the driver of the vehiclebehind me (a white commercial van withorange adverts across the top) got out ofhis car and approached my window say-ing that I had petrol leaking from the backof my car.
When the robot turned green I found asafe place to pull over (at the bus stop stillin Durban Road) and he pulled behind meon that busy road, like a Good Samaritanwho was assisting me out of a fix.
I got out of my car and he inspected un-der my car and said there was a definiteleak and that he would help me, whereaf-ter he quickly signalled that I should fol-low him.
When we both got into our respectivecars and pulled off, he overtook me andturned immediately left at the approach-ing intersection assuming that I wouldfollow him.
I ignored this stranger and proceededstraight.
I went to the nearest petrol station justa little stretch away and asked the petrolattendant to assist me in determining ifI had a fuel leak under my car pointingat the exact location where the concerneddriver had pointed.
Two petrol attendants checked the bot-tom of my car and there were no leaks.This con artist was white, sounded Afri-kaans and in mid-twenties.
This is a scam aimed at misleadingwomen travelling on their own.
Had I accepted his assistance, he proba-bly would have dispossessed me of my ve-hicle, stolen my bag and jewellery andmost likely harmed me.

The health of a democracy is often meas-ured by restrictions on media.
The days of rotting in jail for upholdingone of our most basic rights – the right toknow – could become a reality once again.
Since 1994, information deemed to be inthepublic interestwerepublishedwithoutfear of persecution. Countless examples ofthis freedom permeated the press and con-tributed to numerous restless nights forthose corrupted by power. Now we are atthe crossroads. The significance of thisbill cannot be overemphasised. A freepress has played an invaluable role inbringing “untouchable” citizens to justice– Shabir Shaik, Jackie Selebi, Bheki Cele,Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde.
When sensitive information was leakedin the Apartheid years, the informant andthe journalist or editor could well end upin jail, yet despite this restriction, somecontinued to defy this evil.
In that period the country was rocked bya major political scandal involving the de-partment of information, which was alle-gedly misappropriating State funds for se-cret projects.
A taste of freedom has left us yearningfor more. Or in Madiba’s words, “Let free-dom reign. The sun never set on so glori-ous a human achievement.”

Schools allbursting atthe seamsWith only three weeks left before the endof the school year, schools in Bracken-fell, Durbanville, Delft and Kuils Riverare full to capacity.
The Western Cape Education Departmentis wrapping up its preparations for the 2012school year, which includes the finalisationof enrolments.
Says Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for ed-ucation minister Donald Grant: “The com-pletion of enrolments for the followingschool year is imperative, as this deter-mines the number of staff that will be allo-cated to the particular school, the amountof furniture and stationery required and thenumber of learning materials such as text-books.”
According to her, this year’s early enrol-ment campaign has been a success, withhigh enrolment figures being capturedthroughout the province.
“The greatest demand for enrolment hasbeen in the metro region, with some areasreporting that they are full to capacity,” shesays.
While enrolment has been high in theEden/Karoo, Overberg and West Coast dis-tricts, there is still capacity in some of theschools.
“We are expecting around 100 000 learnersto qualify for enrolment in Grade 1 nextyear, and approximately 80 000 in Grade 8.”
Bronagh says the department does expectsome late enrolments next year, especiallyinvolving learners that have migrated fromother provinces or have enrolled late forpractical reasons, such as family relocation.
“We have identified areas where theremight be high levels of demand. These in-clude Mitchells Plain, Nyanga, Phillipi,Delft, Kuils River, Langa, Hanover Park,Manenberg and Oudtshoorn,” she says.
According to Bronagh there are still par-ents in the province who have children en-tering Grade 1 or Grade 8, but who have notyet enrolled them for 2012 . “I strongly urgethem to do so now. Given that many of ourschools are already full, enrolment at thisstage may require some assistance by theWCED district offices.
“Parents must not leave enrolment to thefirst day of the new school year. This placesa massive amount of pressure on our offi-cials and distracts our schools from theirtask at hand – which is an on-time start toteaching and learning.
“It is simply unfair for parents who havefailed in their responsibility to enrol theirchildren in good time to lay the blame on thedepartment and its officials at the start ofthe new school year.”
Parents need to provide the following doc-uments when submitting their applications:birth certificate; immunisation card; trans-fer card or the last report card for learnerswho have already been to school.

There wasn’t much room for movementbut the strategy of the Brothers Sport/Focus team paid off giving them the topspot in this year’s Tiletoria West CoastExpress Cycle Race.
Leonardo van Onselen managed to crossthe finish line a split second before MatthewWentworth in the sprint to the finish duringthe men’s Elite category in the 85km race.
“We were out of here quite fast, with thespeed fairly high,” Van Onselen said afterthe race.
The riders remained bunched as theypeddled down the R27.
Just after the Atlantis turn-off three riderslaunched a break-away attempt.
“About 10 kilometres later we caught up
with them again. The wind wasn’t much ofa factor this year. The wind we had, was atour backs during the last 30km of the racewhich helped. The light rain we had close toAtlantis played a bigger role,” Van Onselensaid.
Soon thereafter other riders broke awayfrom the bunch, among them Van Onselen’steam mate Riaan Kemp.
“About 10km before the finish we caughtup with them again,” said Van Onselen ad-ding that this flat race makes breaking awayfrom the bunch very difficult.
“When we caught up to the front riders wetried to retain control of the group of some30 riders.
“We did this by having someone from ourteam regularly launching breakaways. Thishelped in keeping the speed fast.”
In the end it was team mates Kemp and
Chris Esch who paved the way for Van Onse-len’s sprint to the finish.
It is not the first time that the rider fromStellenbosch scales to the top spot on the po-dium. Apart from his success in this – theeighth instalment of the race – Van Onselenalso tasted victory in 2004.
The race and funride saw a total numberof some 1 300 entries.
There were two incidents on the routewhere cyclists fell. One cyclist was taken tohospital to receive stitches in his calf, butwas back in time to enjoy the festivities atthe prizegiving.
“We had a very good turnout, consideringthe weather and I believe it is because of thegood prizes and because the people knowthat the money goes to a non profit organisa-tion,” said Mike de Kock of Tiletoria whohelped organise the race.
