As heelag-

The gift of hearingGARY VAN DYK

Gospel artists are getting together to giveagift ofhearing toaRavensmeadwoman.

On Sunday the Fountain Christian Com-munity Centre in Ravenmead will behosting the concert to raise funds forLouisa Da Silva who has been selectedto undergo a cochlear implant but needsto raise the funds for the procedure.

Da Silva, who is profoundly deaf, hasnever allowed her disability to let herdown, but feels that the operation will al-low her to be an inspiration to more peo-ple with disabilities.

“I have been deaf since birth, but froman early age I decided I was going to trymy utmost not to allow my deafness todetermine my future.

“In 1978 I attended the DominicanSchool for the Deaf where they taughtme to speak but not sign language, thenin 1984 I enrolled at Ravensmead HighSchool,” she said.

She remembers she had to work twiceas hard to achieve results, and peoplestill tended to look down at her.

“Funny how when you have a hearingproblem, people often tend to think thatyou are mentally handicapped as well. They look down at you, put you in a boxand sadly sometimes it is those whoshould be closest to you who treat youin this way.”

After high school she went to Athlone

Technical School where she studied hair-dressing and she now runs a salon from herhome in Ravensmead.

During September this year she got thenews that she had been selected for the coch-lear implant.

Top prizes for green fingersRuyterwacht Communicare residentswere recently awarded for their beautifulgardens.

An annual gardening competition is heldfor Communicare residents from across allCommunicare projects.

“The aim of the competition is to promoteclean green environments, to build social co-hesion and to foster a sense of communitypride,” said Thandi Nkatu from the Commu-nity Learning Centre.

“The competition is now running in itsthird year and the level of tenant participa-tion has increased by almost 100 percent since

being introduced in 2009.”The prizegiving was held at Green Point

Park in Cape Town on 17 November.“The tenants were very excited about the

competition, as well as the outing to arguablyone of the most beautiful venues in the city,”said Thandi.

Participants included Communicare ten-ants from Ruyterwacht, Montclair Place(Mitchells Plain), Trianon (Diep River), Drey-ersdal Park (Bergvliet), Musgrave Park’ (DiepRiver), Huis Alleyn Yeld (Bishop Lavis), Rey-ger Court (Brooklyn), Riverside (Thornton),Kent Durr (Bothasig) and Rosehaven Gardens(Durbanville).

All participants received framed certifi-cates in recognition of their participation.Thomas Twigg (Huis Alleyn Yeld), AlbertFisher and Peter Stott (both from Dreyersdal)were awarded top honours for their gardens, and prizes ranged from R500 to R1 000.

Alle voltydse werknemerskry einde November ’n 13de tjek,” hetsy bygevoeg.

There’s even talk of a mystery guest thatwill surprise everyone, but they’re keepingit a secret.

Sax supremo Don-Vino Prins from the aca-demy feels that this is a very important gigfor the academy and says they have beenhard at work rehearsing with all these ar-tists.

“I have been working with many of themover the years, and they know about my pas-sion for helping these youngsters in Delft.

“It is fantastic that they did not hesitateto help me with this concert because we havebeen doing this project with very little spon-

sorship, and there are so many more child-ren in the area who would like to get into mu-sic,” he said.

The project was started in June 2009 whena music winter school was held at Saint Mat-thews Anglican Church in Delft.

“When we finished the workshop we reali-sed that more needed to be done,” continuedPrins.

“The children were so eager and we reali-sed that this was one way of showing themanother side of life for them in an area wherethere are just too many negative influences.

“In these past few years we are continuingto grow, the children are becoming very pro-ficient with their instruments and musicaleducation, and this concert will show the pu-blic how much they have learnt.

“So far we have about 50 regular membersbut there are more waiting in the wings whowant to join,” he said.

The concert will be held at the Legacy LifeCentre in Polaris Road in Lansdowne star-ting at 19:00.

gaan bepleit.“Na herhaaldelike navrae en her-

Bel James by 072386 9096 vir inligting.

Windgat wil Meyer nooit weesJANA BEKKER

Hy bestel warm sjokolade sonderroom.

My werk is stories ver-tel,” sê hy.

Deon het as joernalis by DieVolksblad begin. “As joernalis hetek die basiese beginsels van skryfgeleer. Dit is ’n ding wat net gebeurhet. Eers het ek kortverhale geskryfvir tydskrifte, toe ’n boek.”

Deon beskryf skryf as ’n lewens-lange leerproses. “ ’n Mens skryfnooit so goed soos jy wil nie.

Jy verbeeljouself in daardie wêreld in,” sê hy.

Hydoen dit so, want dit voel reg. “Ditis simbolies.

“Goeie boeke laat ’n mens vergeetdat jy ’n skrywer is.

“My ou-ers was albei mense met ’n wye be-langstelling.

Motorfietsry is De-on se grootste stok-perdjie. Spesiale flie-keffekte is ’n andergroot lekkerte.

Hot lineup for festGARY VAN DYK

The grass is growing, and groo-ving, for some Jazz on theLawn in Epping on 18 Decem-ber.

After a break of a year this po-pular music event on the festivalcalendar will be back at the Bev-can Sports Field in Epping, andthey’ve got a line-up of entertain-ment to get everyone in the pro-per festive groove.

Since 2009 this event has beco-me an extension of the popularG-Spot Lounge live entertain-ment venue with approximately5000 to 6000 people flocking to thisoutdoor concert which features aplethora of great bands, famousDJs and personalities.

Organiser Calvin Peters saidthat fans were very disappointedthat there was no event last year, and he could not let them downagain.

“This festival is what CapeTown is all about, this musicbrings people together who wantto enjoy the sounds that comefromhere, andwhilewehighlight

local talent, this year there is a bitof an international flavour to theevent as well,” he says.

“The exciting news is that wehave managed to get UK crooner,Kenny Thomas, and sax man An-drew Young on to the bill for thisyear. From the local scene we willalso be featuring the Abe Lands-berg band, Virtual Jazz Reality,

The Next Step, Public Opinion,The Rockets, Just Us and Salo-me,”he said.

The festival caters for the who-le family and encompasses a yo-uthareawith jumping castles andgames for children.

Festivities take the form of a 12-hour music marathon starting at11:00, gates are open from 09:30 sothat crowds can settle in properlybefore the music gets going.

Festival goers are welcome tobring along their portable gasbraai’s, gazebos, beach umbrellasand deck chairs. There’ll also befood stalls, a beer garden and sa-tellite bars for adults. Festival or-ganizers have also made arrange-ments for ample parking withsurrounding factories in the area.

Bevcan Sports Field is situatedon the corner of Bofors Circle andGoodenough Avenue in EppingIndustry 2. Tickets are availablefrom Computicket and TheG-Spot. The early bird special forearly booking is R100 per ticketand will run until 16 December.

For more information: Email:[email protected] or www.the-gspot.co.za

Jazzathon is backGARY VAN DYK

The beat is back for one of the Ca-pe’s premier music events to startthe new year.

Planning is currently underwayfor the re-launch of the Cape TownJazzathon that is scheduled to beback at the V&A Waterfront from 13to 15 January. One of the foundersof the festival, Quinton Raaff saidthat they were glad that this eventwould be taking place again.

“We started this event way backin 1997, and it grew into one of theiconic events on the mu-sic calender in the city,”he says.

“The festival plays animportant role in theSouth African music in-dustry and has been atthe forefront of musicand talent developmentby leading and paving theway for other similarevents.”

Fondly referred to as“the people’s festival,”the Jazzathon has experi-enced financial challen-ges for the past few years, but the producers haverefused to give up on fin-ding sponsors for the

event and are calling on corporatecompanies, government and otherpotential funders for assistance.

“Even though the festival still re-quires sponsorship, it has attainedthe support of musicians and fansaround South Africa.” The CapeTown Jazzathon will host mostlyyoung and upcoming bands from allover the Western Cape. Anyonewho would like to contribute in anyway is welcome to contact WilliamResant at [email protected],Craig Parks at [email protected].

Drie T’bergspanne boSAREL BURGER

Durbanville (166/9) trek egter lelik nou-strop teen Glamorgan (292/7, gesl.) vir wieAldo Jantjies (127), Stanton Marinus (72) enSheldon Adams (5/27) kookwater was.

Match expected tobe crowd puller

THOMAS CAROLUS

A big crowd is expected tonightat the Athlone Stadium when En-gen Santos face Sundowns in anAbsa Premier League matchstarting at 19:30.

After his side’s disappointing Tel-kom Knockout semi-final, Santoscoach Boebie Solomons said he felthis side deserved more than just tobow out in that fashion.

Santos went down 3-0 to a ruth-less Bidvest Wits. Solomons, how-ever, feels the scoreline was not atrue reflection of the game and thelocal coach found himself under im-

mense pressure, with his job on theline. They will certainly need tosort out their defence if they are se-rious about finishing in the topeight.

It was the lack of composure thatlet Santos down against a Wits sidethat is progressive and lookingmore dangerous in this league.

After a very poor start to the sea-son, coach Boebie Solomons finallyseemed to get it right but Santosshould know that good footballwithout results won’t save any clubfrom relegation.

With the third worse defensiverecord, they will need to do a lot bet-ter in the remaining games if they

are to secure their PSL status. Thelast four games of this year will becrucial to their survival.

“We are in a very difficult posi-tion, but I am confident that wewon’t be relegated,’’ added Solo-mons.

“You never know what will hap-pen in the future, but I’m sure weare not going down.

“I’m very happy with how thingshave been going and positive thatthe team is ready to make its wayup the log. A top eight finish is anachievement we’d appreciate.

“I was impressed by our perform-ance in our last league matchagainst Kaizer Chiefs,” he said.
