Sheer determination paid off forNosipho Sheila Mdini, a 42-year-old domestic worker from Bos-ton, when she received her Na-tional Diploma in Human Re-source Management last week.

“Since I was little, I told myself Iwanted to be a graduate,” says Shei-la. This dream had to be put on holdwhen she fell pregnant in 1987, atthe age of 17. As she had a child tobring up, Sheila could not completematric, but the dream persisted.

In 2004Sheila completeda compu-ter course and in the following year,

she registered as a part-time stu-dent at the Cape Peninsula Univer-sity of Technology.

This go-getter paid for her studieswith her salary and when she re-ceived her diploma last week, herstudies were paid in full.

“It wasn’t easy,” Sheila says. “Af-ter I completed the second year, Iwanted to quit, because it was toomuch for me.” Sheila had five sub-jects in her first year and four in thesecondyearandwitha full-time job,she merely didn’t have enough timeto juggle everything.

Sheila persisted, however. Mon-days to Thursdays she went to classbetween 17:20 and 19:20 and still had

to find the time to study for testsand exams, but she managed it.

Despite being busy between workand studies, Sheila made time forlove too and in 2007 shemarriedMx-olisi Dala.

During exams though, she tooktime off to study.

Her employer of the past 12 years,Carin Human, is very proud of Shei-la. “She is a real inspiration,” shesays.

About her choice of career Sheilasays: “I want to work in human re-sources. It is such a broad field andI like to talk. I am a people’s per-son,” she says.

(21) is repeating Grade 12 this year,to obtain a better result for univer-sity exemption. “My daughter saysI am an encouragement,” says Shei-la.

While Sheila was studying to-wards her degree, Communication1 was added as an additional subjectto the diploma, which meant Sheilahad to study an additional year, inwhich she completed that one lastsubject.

Although she cannot wait to workin her field, Sheila’s set on doing itright. “I do want to work in humanresources, but I will only leave mycurrent jobonce Ihave foundanoth-er position,” she says.

Só praat Johan Visser van Hermanusoor sy droom om vir ’n miljoen heropbou-en-ontwikkelingsprogramhuise (HOP) ’nbadkamereenheid te installeer.

Hy het ’n projek in dié verband, ge-naamd Hot Water for Africa, begin en ’ngeleentheid om geld vir dié doel in te sa-mel, is verlede week by Bloemendal ge-hou.

Ferdinand Rabie, bekend as Suid-Afri-ka se eerste Big Brother-wenner, is ookbetrokke by die projek en het dié aand op-getree as seremoniemeester.

Dié idee het ’n paar jaar gelede by Jo-han posgevat nadat hy besef het die vrouwat sy dogter help grootmaak het, moessonder warm water oor die weg kom.

“Ek was aanvanklik onbewus daarvandat HOP-huise nie oor so ’n basiese geriefbeskik nie, tot in 2005 toe ek een dag bydie vrou se huis was en dit self gesienhet,” sê hy.

Johan het besluit om iets aan die situa-sie te doen en het besluit om ’n produkte ontwerp wat in dié huise geïnstalleerkon word.

In Suid-Afrika het die mark om só ’ntoestel teen ’n bekostigbare prys te ont-werp, nie bestaan nie.

Oor ’n tydperk van byna drie jaar isdaar gewerk aan die konsep en uiteinde-lik is ’n gietvorm vir ’n plastiekketel, was-

bak en bad in China laat maak.Die drie-in-een-produk is ontwerp vol-

gens spesifikasies wat geskik was vir diesoort huise waarin dit geïnstalleer souword.

Die warmwatertoestel word toegerusmet ’n elektriese kragprop, wat water bin-ne 40minuteverhit nadat dit aangeskakelis.

Johan sê hy hoop steeds om die Suid-Afrikaanse regering te oortuig om diéstelsel by die HOP-huisbegrotings in tesluit, want al is dié stelsels teen baie be-kostigbare prys beskikbaar, is dit steedsméér geld as wat inwoners van HOP-hui-se vir so ’n toestel kan betaal.

“Vanaand speel ek egter die RobinHood-rol en die doel van vanaand is omgeld te kry by mense wat meer het, om virdié te gee wat minder het.”

Johan, wat ses maande van die jaar inEngeland woon, het daar ’n liefdadig-heidsorganisasie gestig en ’n artikel 21-maatskappy in Suid-Afrika.

Johandroomdaarvanomvir ’nmiljoenhuise die stelsel te installeer, maar sken-kings is noodsaaklik. Tot dusver dra hyself die kostes daarvan.

Motorists can now look forward to a quickerway of getting to their destination followinga set of robots which have finally been put upin Kuils River.

With no robots on the corners of the Stellen-bosch Arterial and Saxdown Road, chaoserupted causing traffic back-ups and numer-ous accidents have also occurred.

After regular pressure from residents trav-elling on the road, ward councillor CynthiaClaasen made plans to have the robots put up.

The robots have been up and running sinceSunday and she says they have already hadpositive responses since then.

“There was a Stop Street at the SaxdownRoad which prevented motorists from gettingonto the Stellenbosch Arterial and this causedmayhem on the roads,” says Claasen.

“I was inundated with emails from resi-dents asking for something to be done urgent-ly. I then went to the area to witness for myselfwhat the problem was and I had first-hand ex-perience what the people were complaining

about.”She says it took her hours to get onto the

Stellenbosch Arterial Road and this pushedher even more to set plans in motion.

She says motorists who came from SaxdownRoad had to drive along the yellow line justto get onto the road, but once they were onthere they would have to battle to get acrossto a lane.

“I know now that it was a disaster and themotorists were battling to get to where theyneeded to be,” says Claasen.

“I am just so happy that the problem hasbeen solved. Other roads will also be lookedat where robots are needed.”

Shaun Van Schalkwyk, a motorist, says itis better driving now.

“It was problematic at first, but now it ismuch better. It gives motorist a fair chanceand we all get an equal chance on the road.”

Natasha Hendricks also agrees that the roadis better to travel on.

“I use that road to get to work and since therobots have been put up, it has been so mucheasier.”

Traffic light improves safety

SAPS found a black male who had been hit bya vehicle on the Stellenbosch Arterial Road.

He was wearing black shoes, black trousers,and a grey shirt with blue and white hoodedtrack-top. It is suspected that he is between 50and 60 years of age.

A docket of culpable homicide has beenopened.

Anyone with information regarding this in-cident can contact the investigating officer,Sergeant Ronald Davies at Mfuleni SAPS on084 582 9028.

In another incident on Saturday 14 April atabout 15:15 the body of another unknown

black male was found in the river at the backof Extension 6 in Mfuleni.

Hewaswearingbrownishpants, a brownishjersey and a grey/khaki jacket. Cause of deathis unknown.

Based on the status of the body, it is estimat-ed that he might have been in the water forabout four days. An inquest docket has beenopened.

Mfuleni police are appealing to the commu-nity to come forward with any informationthat could lead to the successful identificationof these victims.

Police need help to ID bodies

Mfuleni SAPS seeks the assistance of the pub-lic in tracinga suspect involved in twomurdercases and one attemptedmurder case.

On Monday 19 Marchat about 06:00 the sus-pect shot a 25-year-oldmale twice in the headin Challo Street inWesbank.

Then on Sunday 1April at about 19:00 twobrothers and a friendwere standing in CadotStreet in Wesbank,when the suspect shotone of the brotherstwice in the head, thenchased the other broth-er and also shot him in his back and head –he is in a critical condition in hospital.

The gunman then shot their friend in the

leg.He is considered to be armed and very dan-

gerous.Police have described him

as approximately 1,7 metrestall, fair in complexion witha scar on his face.

It is believed that he ismoving between Delft,Wesbank and BellvilleSouth.

Mfuleni police are appeal-ing to the community tocome forward with any in-formation that could lead toa successful arrest of thissuspect.

“Nadat ek die handleiding vrygestel het,het ’n oorsese groep my genader om die self-ontdekkingsprogram in 10 provinsies dwarsoor Suid-Afrika aan te bied,” sê sy. Met diéprojek word daar beoog om meer as 150 jongmense in elke provinsie te bereik voor eindeSeptember. “Dit gaan baie harde werk weesmaar vir my is dit ’n uitdaging wat ek metliefde en entoesiasme sal aanpak,” sê sy.

Die self-ontdekkingsprogram is gemikdaarop om jong mense weer terug te bringna die denkwyse dat lewensgeluk gepaardgaan met die bevordering van selfbeeld. “Myleuse vir die program is ‘ek is spesiaal’ endit is die belangrikste boodskap wat ek aanjong mense wil oordra,” sê Roode.

Gedurende die vierdag-program word dieonderwerpe self-ontdekking, entrepreneur-skap, beroepskeuses en self-bevordering ge-dek. Sterk klem word gelê op die belangrik-heid wat skoolwerk op die gehalte van ’nmens se lewe in ’n later stadium het. “Diepositiewe uitwerking wat hierdie programop die kinders het, is ongelooflik. Nadat jongmense die program voltooi het, is hulle altydgemotiveer om hul skoolwerk en persoonli-ke sake agter mekaar te kry,” sê sy.

Roode het reeds in Kuilsrivier met die pro-gram afgeskop en vertrek binnekort na Gau-teng. Sy laat nie op haar wag as dit by diebevordering van ander kom nie, en sê dat “’nvlieënde kraai altyd iets het”.

Mfuleni police staff were remindedabout the prevalence of corruptionamong their ranks on Wednesday.

The talk was conducted by Capt Nomath-emba Muavha, spokesperson of Mfuleni Po-lice Station.

“Our vision and aim is to create a safe en-vironment for everyone living in the com-munity. We should investigate all crimesand the root and causes of crimes,” Muavhasaid.

She continued to emphasise to the officershow important honesty and integrity was intheir line of work.

“Honesty is very important to us as com-munity members won’t come to us if theydo not trust us, so it’s important to be trust-worthy,” she said.

Latching on to the topic of the community,Muavha felt it important just to remind of-ficers that community members should betreated with the utmost respect. Many times

disabled and homosexuals are discriminat-ed against in society. She advised officialsthat they should be treated with the samelevel of respect. A good work ethic was alsoencouraged. An example of a ringing phonewas made, where she said that a phoneshould be answered promptly. Many tip-offsare received by police telephonically.

Muavha then returned to her message oncorruption where she defined the act of cor-ruption being the involvement of at leasttwo people. Three key examples of corrup-tion were touched on during the meeting:leaking valuable information, acceptingbribes and abusing one’s power were allclassified as acts of corruption.

Officials were told that if anyone were tobe found guilty of accepting gifts and not de-claring them, caught abusing their power orgiving classified information to criminals,they would be charged with corruption.

After the talk, a question and answer ses-sion was held and the officials were givenan opportunity to say their say on the topicof corruption.

City residents can now phone a new toll- freenumber to report any incidents regardingstreet children and street people.

This number – 0800 872 201 – according toCornelia Finch, district head of the City ofCape Town’s social development sector, wasrolled out as part of the Give Responsiblycampaign.

This campaign, launched last month,aims to discourage members of the commu-nity from giving irresponsibly.

“Handouts given directly to street peoplesustain a deeply damaging lifestyle on the

streets. With our programmes we aim to getthem off the streets, by a holistic approach,”she says.

“If you really want to help, phone the toll-free numbers to find out how and where youcan help.

“You can also report street people to thiscall centre, from where action will be taken,either by means of a social worker or organi-sation,” she says.

According to Finch the call centre will bemanned by four dedicated staff members,and she advises the public to phone the callcentre, instead of the police or ward council-lor, in cases involving street people.

First the manholes, now the brass padlocksare popular among thieves.

This is due to the high monetary value ofbrass and copper.

Dr Les Rencontre, director of electricity ser-vices of the City of Cape Town, said becauseof the theft of the padlocks, the city has recei-ved numerous complaints of open electricitykiosks.

He responded to a complaint byaDurbanvil-le resident, James Black, who found an openelectrical kiosk outside his house on the cor-ner of Paul Kruger and Hibiscus streets.

Although the City locked the box after hecomplained, he said it is not the first time box-es have been left unlocked.

“I want someone to sit up and do somethingto make sure nothing like this is repeated. Canyou imagine what would happen if a child pla-yed there?” he asked.

According to Rencontre the maintenance ofelectrical equipment in the city is done on a

fixed maintenance plan.In the case of kiosks the period is one year.“Due to previous manpower shortages, so-

me depots could be somewhat in arrears withkiosk maintenance. In the interim the electri-city department is in the process of replacingbrass padlocks with nylon padlocks,” he said.

Thieves now targeting locks

This is the state in which a resident found anelectrical box outside his house in HibiscusStreet in Durbanville recently.

Through a group effort between educa-tors, the police, psychologists and nurs-es, a two-day profiling kicked off onWednesdayatPalmParkPrimarySchoolin an effort to safeguard their learners.

The initiative came about when two edu-cators from the school, Zahida Sonday andLizelle Rose heard about the profiling calledIdent-A-Kid being done at Bastion PrimarySchool in Brackenfell.

The idea turned to action when 1 800 PalmPark learners completed their Ident-A-Kidpacks. This included a DNA mouth swabwhich was done by nurses from the EersteRiver Hospital and thumbprints which weredone by the Kleinvlei police.

“This is a broader awareness of child safe-ty. We are also planning on having a traffic

officer coming to address learners aboutroad safety in the future. As for the Ident-A-Kids, we hope that we never get to the posi-tion that we have to release fingerprints tothe police, but if so, police will have finger-prints, DNA and a photo of the learner,” saidFloris Meissenheimer, principal of PalmPark Primary School.

Meissenheimer feels that as a community,everyone has a responsibility to care aboutthe youth.

The two Palm Park Primary educatorsboth have a background in counselling.They also run a trauma room for learnerswho have been abused or need someone totalk to.

The police and nurses were only morethan happy to help out on the day. “We areglad to be part of this and assisting childrenin the area,” said Sgt Carmen Marinus, headof social crime at Kleinvlei Police Station.

The beauty competition which saw 11 lo-cal girls show their talent also served as afundraiser as well as good fun.

“We hope that people will enjoy it, and likethe singing and dancing items that we havein our line-up as well. It’s important thatpeople know about us so that we can helpthem,” said Samantha Holmes, one of the or-ganisers and a member of Reliable Action.

What gave this pageant a twist was thatthe swimwear category was replaced withpyjama wear. The girls, who ranged from 15to 27 years of age, posed in their nighties, bedtime slippers, gowns and were even caught

sporting the odd teddy.“Most girls aren’t comfortable to model in

bikinis, so we changed that category to pyja-ma-wear,” said Holmes,

The money raised at the pageant will beploughed back into buying equipment suchas needles and blood pressure machines.The organisation is sponsored by the depart-ment of health but also rely on their ownfunds.

They also offer their services free ofcharge and help people with various chronicillnesses. They cover illnesses such as highblood pressure, sugar diabetes, HIV and un-healthy weight gain.

The Mfuleni police put their bestfoot forward on Wednesdaywhen they held their walk-a-thon in the warm blaze of thesun.

“This is a great way to de-stressas well as a great way to get exer-cise. Some of our detectives are sopiled with file-work that they do notsee sunlight during the day. So I amsure to have something like this isa good change of scenery,” said

Capt Nomathemba Muavha,spokesperson for Mfuleni police.

The initiative was brought up ina meeting between Muavha andother officers to boost morale of of-ficers.

Admin clerks, constables, ser-geants, warrant officers and cap-tains made up 23 Mfuleni staff whojoined in the fun.

Clocking in at just over 45 min-utes, Sgt Christine Meyer was thefirst to finish the three and a halfkilometre walk.

“It was a nice walk and I would

like to do it again, even on a weeklybasis would be great. I didn’t expectto come first though, I just came toenjoy myself and walked for the funof it,” Meyer said.

This walk has inspired her to getback into walking and brush up onher fitness. As if winning was notenough she also received a surprisehamper for making it first.

Most of the Mfuleni staff agreewith Meyer that this should be donemore often and that they enjoyedtheir brief exercise session thor-oughly.

“Missing drain covers are not only a dangerto pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, butmore so to our childrenwhoplay in thevicin-ity.

“The replacement of the covers is an un-necessary expense to the City – the moneycould rather be used for new infrastructureor maintenance,” said the chairman for Sub-council 3, James Vos, after numerous inci-dents of stolen drain covers were reported tothe municipality. “We continue to call upon the communityto please keep their eyes and ears open andhelp the city’s Copperheads to combat thisactivity by calling 0800 222 771 with any in-formation. It would be especially appreciat-ed if the information is as detailed as possi-ble, for example, if it is a vehicle, provide themake, colour and even number plate of thevehicle,” says Vos.

Vos explains that damage and theft of mu-nicipal property is a serious criminal of-fence. He went on to say that this degradesthe environment, creates the perception thatmatters are out of control and, as a result,the values of homes and businesses deterio-rate. “This has a major impact on the overallquality of life in our community.”

Vos explains that he constantly lobbies themunicipality to make main roads more aes-thetically pleasing, with landscaped en-trances and centre medians as well as streetsweeping and litter picking, only to see draincovers stolen and essential street signs wan-tonly bent and broken, as well as the destruc-

tion of litter bins coupled with dumping.“Drain covers and road signs are impor-

tant for the safety of motorists and pedestri-ans alike, and damage to these signs createsan unsafe and potentially dangerous situa-tion; needless to say, repair and replacementof these items are also extremely costly andcounter-productive.”

A centre equipped with a PET/CT scannerfor the early detection of cancer, was offi-cially opened last Thursday 19 April at Ty-gerberg Hospital in Parow.

The scanner worth more than R15 million,will now be available to patients of the West-ern Cape’s three academic hospitals. This isthe first PET/CT scanner in the provincialstate health sector.

This initiative is a joint venture betweenthe Western Cape Department of Health, whopaid for the building of the centre, and NTPRadioisotopes,who donated thescanner.

At the openingfunction, West-ern Cape HealthMinister TheunsBotha, said: “Thecost-saving im-plication of thistechnology isphenomenal, andalso means thatgreater numbersof patients will betreated more ap-propriately, withimproved out-comes for all.This is such agreat example ofthe public andprivate sectorworking togetherfor the wellbeingof the people ofthe WesternCape.”

Marie Curie, a two times Nobel Prize win-ner, including one for her co-discovery withher husband Pierre of the radioactive elementradium, also “attended” the function in thebody of actress Bev Cooke-Tonnesen. Radiumis used in cancer radiotherapy, as well as aneutron source for some research purposes.

Apart from the scanner, which was madepossible by Curie’s life work after all, “Curie”herself was the belle of the ball.

She entertained guests with quirky ac-counts of her life back then when everythingshe touched became radioactive!

Curie died of cancer in 1934 due to an over-exposure to radium.

Fighting for children who havebeen diagnosed with cancer –this is why the Little FighterCancer Trust was formed.

The trust, which gives relief tocancer babies and their families,has been selected as one of the bene-ficiaries for the ’Cause We Can!/Want Ons Kan! charity concert fea-turing some of the top names in theSA music scene.TygerBurger is the media spon-

sor of the event.The amazing concert is set to take

place on Sunday 29 July and willshowcase artists such as LaurikaRauch, Andriëtte Norman, AlanCommittie, Zanne Stapelberg, AD-AM, Heinz Winckler, Koos Kom-buis, Wicus van der Merwe, LizeBeekman, Brandon October, EmoAdams and Take Note, PedroKruger and Dowwe Dolla.

“We are trying to raise money tohelp the families of the children

who have been diagnosed with can-cer,” says Mandie Erasmus fromthe Little Fighter Cancer Trust.

“Cancer is not a thing that hap-pens to a person of a certain age. Weneed to create awareness in SouthAfrica as more children are beingdiagnosed and these families needsupport.”

She says some of the parents losetheir jobs andbusinesses because ofthe medical bills and because theywant to give their children the bestmedical care.

“These people need petrol money,food, clothes and money for hospi-tal and doctor bills and that iswhere we come in and try to assist.”

The trust was started in 2010 byTania Goslett and Thomas Engelain Paarl.

They were offering support tofamilies but then they realised thatthey needed to be a bigger trust tooffer assistance to more families. Inless than a year they were offeringsupport to 40 families all over CapeTown and even Johannesburg.

The trust shows support to anychild diagnosed with cancer under18, but if the child is over the ageand still has cancer, the relation-ship will continue.

Erasmus came on board after hermother, grandmother and grandfa-ther died of cancer.

“Cancer patients have alwaysbeen close to my heart. I startedreading the trust’s Facebook pageand after Tania and Thomas askedme to get involved I started doingfundraisers.”

From these fundraisers outreachprogrammes were started and theBag of Hope project was born – thetrust makes up food parcels for thefamilies of the cancer children, theyalso refurbish the beds and draw-ers. Families also receive bags con-taining cereal, noodles, coffee, tea,sugar, shampoo, conditioner, toilet-ries and other things they mayneed.

Children receive bags withclothes, shoes, stationery, toys, toi-letries, juices, a blanket – all the es-sentials they may need.

“For Mother’s Day we want to dosomething for the mothers too be-cause they would sit at hospitalssometimes for years while theirchildren are receiving cancer treat-ment and often they have to selltheir belongings to pay for the treat-ment,” says Erasmus.

“That’s where we come in: we dis-tribute bags to the mothers withnice feminine goodies and flowers.We will also be cooking a nice lunchfor them on the day.”

Erasmus says the goodies are andwill be delivered to various placeswho care for children who havebeen diagnosed with cancer.

She says for the future they arelooking at getting vehicles to helpwith the transporting of the goods.They are also looking at buying ahouse close to the Red Cross Chil-dren’s Hospital.

“We want the mothers to come tothe house and have a place to un-

wind after spending hours at thehospital. We also want to empowerthe mothers, many of them havegiven up their jobs to be able to bewith their children and we need toassist them,” says Erasmus.

“We want to have short courses,including computer literacy to em-power these women.”

She says it is “heartwarming” tobe one of the beneficiaries of theCause We Can!/Want On Kan! con-cert.

“We are very humbled to havebeen selected as a beneficiary. Wewill be able to better our service tothe community. We are thankful forthe opportunity,” she says.

Transport still bighurdle for disabledI am a 57-year-old paraplegic due to a car ac-cident in 1984. I lost my motor vehicle claimin 1989 due to negligence at the Table ViewPolice Station.

The police lost the original accident reportand the High Court only accepts the state-ment taken at the time of the accident.

Those years things were very difficult forthe disabled. Jobs were unheard of. I workedvery hard and went through so many humili-ations and insults trying to get a job. Thegrant those years was R189 per month andI was a single parent; my son was six yearsold at the time.

I did different courses and offered myskills free to companies just to show that Iam able. In 1989 I started at a company as anAutocad operator.

Those years companies paid you whateverthey wanted to. They told me that I was luckyso I should be grateful. The person that I re-placed earned R600 per week, I was paid R120for Autocad and accounts because I was disa-bled.

That did not put me off, it just made mestronger and more determined to do better.

I also got my driver’s licence in 1989. Thoseyears no driving school had ever taken a dis-abled person on the road.

These were only some of the challenges Ihad to overcome. The letter will be too longif I told you everything.

At the moment I am working at Murray &Roberts Foreshore, Cape Town as a recep-tionist. My problem is public transport.

I have been registered at Dial-A-Ride since2009. Nontando at Dial-A-Ride has finally af-ter writing so many letters to so many differ-ent people including the mayor’s office re-sponded, by saying they will work some-thing out.

Apparently Dial-A-Ride has only 27 vehi-cles and 6 000 registered people. Nontando to-gether with the mayor’s office responded 5

problem. I take the MyCiTi bus from the air-port to the Civic Centre. I need transport tothe airport.

The MyCiTi bus is very wheelchair friend-ly and the staff very accommodating, theywill help push me to work. The pavementsare not very accessible, no ramps.

I live in Ravensmead and start work 07:30till 16:30 Monday to Friday. At the momentI use the MyCiTi bus from the Cape Town air-port to the Civic Centre in town.

The bus is very wheelchair friendly andthe monthly is R424, very accommodating.

My problem is getting to and from the air-port, people chargeR50per ride and somearevery unreliable. I have to ask different peo-ple every day. My stomach is like a tumbledrier, I have this constant fear, worry, thatI will not get to work.

It is important for me to be at work on timeevery day.

The reason for this letter is, to make peopleaware of the transport problem disabled peo-ple have. The government encourages Per-sons with Disabilities to become independ-ent and apply for jobs, but how can they ap-ply for jobs when they have no way of gettingto work?

There are so many disabled people whowould prefer to earn a salary than depend ona government grant.

This is 2012 – surely by now South Africashould be better equipped to accommodatetransport for the disabled?

Public transport in general is a majorproblem in South Africa. It should not onlybe a Dial-A-Ride problem.We should be ableto take public transport. I need to addressthis problem to people that will be able to actpositively. Please assist!

This is the feeling of local communityworker Frank Julie who started the PeopleFirst Foundation (PFF) two years ago tobuild the capacity of NGO leaders in thecommunity.

Last week they hosted their fifth OpenLeadership Forum at the Leliebloem Child-fren’s Home inAthlone withmore than 70participantsbenefiting fromthe activities.

Julies pointedout that with thecurrent reces-sion in the coun-trymanyorgani-sations werestruggling toraise funds tokeep theirprojects going,but this was a fo-rum for them tobecome aware ofinnovative ideasto keep running.

“At this forum they were given thechance to ask questions from five develop-ment specialists on a variety of issues.

“These included labour law and publicemployment services, local governance,leadership and management, media, fund-raising, staff development, monitoring andevaluation, as well as other related issues.

“Those who attended were impressedwith the responses from the panel,” he said.

Another important aspect of the forumwas the opportunity for networking and Ju-lie thanked the leaders for taking the timeto attend the forum.

He also alerted them to future plannedevents such as donor forums where leaderscan meet and engage critically with donorson funding practices in a time of financialcrisis and NGO legal compliance.

PFF is also planning a series of work-shops to train non-profit leaders to becomemore effective in their organisations.

It’s the end of April, but matricsmust start making plans fortheir studies in 2013.

While the April holidays areslowly fading, and this year’s Grade12s are only just settling into theirlast year at school, an education ex-pert warns that those who want topursue studies next year must startinvestigating their options and sub-mit applications to the tertiary in-stitutions of their choice.

“It is imperative that the lessonsof the last three or four years areused to make this group’s experi-ence less stressful than those of thethousands upon thousands of pro-spective students who had theirdreams dashed in recent years,”says Dr Felicity Coughlan, directorof the Independent Institute of Edu-cation.

In past years, many prospective

students left their registrations andapplications until the last minute(or even later). Great distress re-sulted when masses of applicationscould not be considered becausethey were late, a candidate’s chosencourse was already fully sub-scribed, or a school-leaver’s aca-demic record disqualified him orher for a chosen path.

“This year’s matrics must act im-mediately to ensure they have suffi-cient time to investigate their op-tions and apply timeously. Takingaction now can save a lot of heart-ache and complications, includingunexpected financial blows, later,”says Coughlan.

She says the following tips willempower students to make the bestchoices for their unique circum-stances, without the pressure oflooming deadlines forcing them ina direction they would not other-

wise have chosen:. Broaden your scope and

check out campuses for yourself.“Guidance teachers at school can

only offer advice on that with whichthey are familiar, which often lim-its their guidance to a smallnumber of public universities. Asmart student will explore optionsin the public and private sector, andwill go to the campuses themselvesrather than blindly trust advertise-ments,” says Coughlan.

. Check the facts.“This is your future so fully ex-

plore registration and accredita-tion, entrance requirements, dura-tion of qualification, price, campussize, equipment, staffing and suc-cess rates. Don’t be fooled by hollowpromises – check the facts on whichall promises are based and if thereare no facts to back them up, walkaway. Read the small print.”

. Keep your options open byhaving options.

“Youmust apply tomore thanoneinstitution and even across institu-tion types (for instance public andprivate institutions, universitiesand colleges). It is also better to ap-ply for more than one qualification.Once your results have been re-leased, your foresight will meanthat you will be in a position tomake the best available choice.”

. Meet the deadlines.“Several institutions have sur-

prisingly early closing dates and itis important to get your applicationin on time. While many private in-stitutions offer the advantage ofhaving closing dates that don’t fallwithin your Grade 12 year, youshould not leave applications tothem too late either, as the demandon many high quality programmesis high.”

. Hope for the best but preparefor the worst.

“If degree study is what you want,then familiarise yourself with thedifferent levels of achievementneeded for the same degree at differ-ent institutions. Understand nowwhat the alternative access routesto degree study are should you notqualify this year.”

. But remember, life is notlived by degrees.

Coughlan points out that it is amyth that all the best opportunitiescome to those with degrees.

“A person with a respected, voca-tionally focused diploma can bemore employable than someoneholding a generic undergraduatedegree. A degree is no longer thedoor opener it used to be. Employ-ers are looking for a match betweenwhat they need and what you havestudied.”

Trumpeter Vernon Steer will beblowing up a storm at The G-Spotnext week when he launches hisdebut CD.

On Monday 30 April he will begiving the public a taste of what canbe heard on the release when he ap-pears with the Richard Caesar bandat the venue in Epping.

Caesar also produced the record-ing.

Steer confesses that it has been along, and hard journey in music forhim, but the harmony has givenhim lots of joy.

It all started when he listened toLouis Satchmo Armstrong as a five-year-old on his grandmother’sgramophone records.

“It was just something about thetone of the trumpet that intriguedme and I was hooked,” he says.

“I started learning and fromabout 11 started playing in Christ-mas choirs and other bands.”

The family stayed in Claremontand was forcefully moved to Hano-verParkdue to theGroupAreasActwhere Steer spent most of his form-ative years.

At 16 he was already performingin a band called Extraction from

Grassy Park, but loved playing allkinds of music.

“I loved playing anything,” hesays with a sparkle in his eye.

“You would find me playing theballroom scene with Ikey Gamba ona Friday, a pop scene on the Satur-day and on a Sunday get involvedwith a heavy jazz jam in Athlone.But, I just had to be playing all thetime.”

In the early ’80s he recorded thehit song “Kalimba Party” with To-morrow’s World in Johannesburgwhilst also working and recordingwith Jonathan Butler before hebroke into the international mar-ket.

Thereafter he returned to CapeTown and joined the Prison ServiceBand which was disbanded in 1989and the band members were trans-ferred to various prisons as war-dens, but Steer kept up with his mu-sic playing wherever he could.

He played with Paul Simon on hisSA tour in 1994 along with saxo-phonist Micheal Brecker, and ex-Capetonian multi-instrumentalist,Tony Cedras.

Another exciting time was whenhe worked with Afro-jazz brass pio-neers, Mike Mahkalamele andStompie Manana in the WorkforceBand at the popular ’80s jazz haunt,the Village Pub which later becameThe Villa Revue in Maitland.

Another well-known venue heperformed at was the Inn on ThePlain, managed at the time by veter-an crooner, Rudolph Paulse, in the

bands Together and Horizon whichincluded the legendary RobbieJansen.

“This was an exciting time forme,” he says.

“During this time it was almostlike going to university to be work-ing with someone like Robbie be-cause you were always learning somuch more about your craft.

“I also loved performing with theSchilder family; the brothers Tony,Chris and Richard – each one hadtheir own individual style and werealways willing to share their knowl-edge with you.”

Since then he has always been onthe scene performing at a widerange of gigs, his most recent beingwith the group Touchdown at the G-Spot in Epping.

He feels that this is the right timefor his debut release and is veryglad that Richard Caesar is behindthe project.

“We virtually grew up together,”says Steer.

“Apart from being a friend he isa phenomenal performer and peo-ple are going to be knocked out withhis production of the album.”

The album is called Mr T Man,and Caesar is embarking on a newside of his musical journey by as-sisting the many unsung heroes oflocal music to get their material re-corded.

’n Derde agtereenvolgende oorwinning dieafgelope naweek maak Durbanville/Bell-ville tans die vroeë voorloper op die punte-leer in die A-afdeling van die WP se Super-rugbyliga.

Maar dit was grootliks ’n teleurstellende na-week vir die spanne in die Tygerbergstreek,behalwe dat Noordelike/Northlink-kollege enBellville darem ook aan die wenkant was.

Nadat dieDurbies verledeWoensdag ’nveel-seggende oorwinning van 27-19 oor Universi-teit Kaapstad behaal het, het hulle Saterdag

ook 32-10 met die Victoriane afgereken. DieIkeys se nederlaag was die eerste ná 14 agter-eenvolgende oorwinnings sedert verlede sei-soen in die Superliga. Durbanville se voorhoe-de het die studentespan deeglik laat les opsê.

Ook in die wedstryd teen die Victoriane isdie studentespan voorlangs ore aangesit endanksy die Durbies se baie balbesit het hulledie meeste aanvalswerk gedoen. Daarmee is’n bonuspuntdrie ook bewerkstellig.

Hoewel Tygerberg-klub 18-34 teen Schot-sche Kloof/Walmer verloor het – nadat hy metdie draaislag nog 18-12 voor was – kon dieKaapse besoekers eers kort voor die einde ’noorwinning verseker.

Bishop Lavis Cricket Club are stayingwith their winning ways.

Calm and cool heads by the boys fromBishop Lavis ensured that the club remainsunbeaten at Newlands Cricket Stadiumwhen they won their second consecutiveWestern Province 1C AMA-20 final by 5wickets against Milnerton last Sunday.

Milnerton elected to bat first and scored98/6 with Robbie van Harte the pick of theMilnerton batsmen with an unbeaten 47runs.

A 37-run fifth wicket partnership withJohn Maritz (27) helped them to a reasona-ble score after a batting collapse in the mid-dle with both the Bedford brothers failingto contribute with the bat.

Bishop Lavis, who lost their first wicketwith the score on 2, also struggled to gettheir innings off to a good start and it wasa 45-run partnership between the experi-enced Justin Miller (20) and Earl Abrahams(16) that stabilised the innings in the mid-dle.

But at the end it was a memorable in-nings by Simeon Fondling (21 not out) whosteered the boys from Bishop Lavis to theirsecond consecutive title at Newlands. Fon-dlingwasalso rewardedwith theManof theMatch award.

Captain, Dale Rainers was full of praisefor his charges and said the win was not on-ly for the club but the Bishop Lavis commu-nity as a whole.

“It is an honour to represent your clubat Newlands and the occasion is so muchsweeter when you are victorious,” he said.

The Bishop Lavis CC will host their Pres-entation of Awards ceremony this Satur-day (28 April), at the Bishop Lavis CivicCentre starting at 18:30.
