BENDEFAKSIES: KINDERS WORD BETREK, KLA OUERS
Dít is hoe
onskuldigemense vermoorword.
“Die same-

Daar is minderas 10 % skuldigbevindings.
in Junie was daar drie gevalle.

MICHELLE LINNERT
Dié erfwaaropOnsTrots gebou is, Erf 105,
blymaar ’n omstredekwessie. Volgens Faith Mamphuta, sekretaresse

In less than a month they confiscatedroughly 30 knives, screwdrivers, ma-chetes, scissors and lunging instrumentsfrom suspicious characters. They sacrificed their family time and
faced danger on a regular basis, andwhy? So they could keep others safe. These were the selfless duties performedby our local neighbourhood watchesover a single month.“When we have the suspicion that
someonemay be hiding dangerousweap-ons or drugs,we do randomsearches.Weidentify ourselves, and search the per-son,” said Julian Unthank. He is the chairman of the Community
Policing Forumfor the greaterBlue Downs andKleinvlei areas, and oversees thework done by thevarious neigh-bourhood watcheshere. The handful of dedicated watch mem-
bers truly deserve the admiration oftheir communities, he said.Unthank gives a little more insight in-
to their work.“As soon as we find drugs, we report
it to the police. When they come, they ar-rest the suspect with the drugs still ontheir person.“Whenwe findweapons, and thepolice
haven’t come after one hour, we releasethe person and confiscate the weapon,”he said.Unthank encouraged communities to
stand up and join the CPF and the neigh-bourhood watches, “to take our streetsback”.“We also want to encourage the com-
munity to contact the CPF so we cancome speak to the community to raiseawareness of how it works, and to formstreet committees in their area,” he said.“The biggest problemwe are currently
facing is our drug problem and housebreaking, which is feeding the addicts’drug habit.”
One of the neighbourhoodwatchesUn-thank regularly works with, is the onefrom Greenfields. When asked why his watch does their
goodwork, amember from thatwatch re-plied thus: “It’s for the safety of our com-munity, our children, our businesses inthe area.” This is what Anwar Williamsfrom the Greenfields NeighbourhoodWatch had to say.“We have different open entry points
into Greenfields, and our function is toprevent unwanted elements from gain-ing access andwalking in fromother are-as.“There is also a bushwhich surrounds
Greenfields, so our role is to protects ourresidents. Unwanted elements need to
know the Green-fields Neighbour-hood Watch has azero tolerance poli-cy,” he said.“We will not take
any nonsense fromanybody. Peoplewho don’t belong in
our area should know our members car-ry tazers and if you don’t belong in ourarea, we will ‘tazer you out’!” he said.Unthank asked schools, churches,
community based organisations, busi-nesses, political parties and especiallyyouth organisations to become a part ofthe solution “to turn the tide on crime”.He urged parents of drug addicted
youngsters to seekhelpbefore their childgets caught in the penal system.Unthank also wants the police to step
up to the plate. If community members know of inci-
dents where police excelled, they areurged to speak up so good service can berecognised. By the same token, he urgedcommunities to report bad service so itcan be addressed. There are a number of publicmeetings
by the organisations, and communitiesare encouraged to attend, as this is theideal platform to have their voices heardregarding problems and solutions.V Interested members can contact Unthank at084 5777 574 or at [email protected].

“’n Volkswagen Golf 6 het ver-by my gery en my afgetrek.

Vasco station has been described as a cess-pool of vagrancy and litter and some resi-dents of Riverton Estate have just about hadenough. They have been bothered by the dilapidat-
ed railway house and condition of the sta-tion’s environment for months now.If the station does not get a facelift soon
it might attract more vagrants and littering, says Steve Ross, chairman of RivertonNeighbourhood Watch.Ross says a house next to the railway line
was used by vagrants and drug sellers andadds that the vagrants have now moved onto the premises of the railway station.“After many emails and complaints to the
city and the relevant authorities, the housewas demolished at the beginning of thisyear. The vagrants who occupied the housethen moved below the footbridge and werecreating a home for themselves there.”“Our residents were being annoyed and
even threatened by these people and theircronies and even some dealers of illegaldrugs,” Ross says.According to him, they have called the lo-
cal police office in Elsies River to complainand asked the officers to scare off the va-grants.
“The vagrantswould return a fewdays lat-er and seemed to get more brazen as theweeks went along,” says Ross.Ross says the watch wrote an email to
Metrorail explaining that they wanted thesituation of drugs, littering and vagrancy tobe cleared up.“The issue was ignored until I personally
metwith the stationmanager, SylviaMama. She went along with her security staff to,once again, get rid of the vagrants, but noth-ing was done about the filth,” Ross says.He adds: “The station seems to have been
cleaned up however, the place is still filthyas the vagrants who left there, are still mill-ing around the premises.
“Daily illegal trading, and the selling andbuying of drugs is blatant, with hardly anyregard for the public walking by,” he adds.Mthuthuzeli Swartz, regionalmanager for
Metrorail Western Cape says Metrorail isobliged to remove vagrants from rail pre-cincts with the assistance of railway policeand will continue to address the situation asbest it can with the resources at its disposal.“Their removal is often in response to
complaints from residents who purport thatvagrancy contributes to crime in theirneighbourhoods or when their illegal pres-ence in the rail reserve affects our rail oper-ations,” he says.In many instances illegal substances and
stolen goods are confiscated.Hemaintains that the presence of indigent
people in Metrorail’s rail reserve requiresan integrated and sustainable response. TheCity of Cape Town’s Displaced Peoples Unit(DPU), local community policing forumsand city improvement districts usually col-laborate with Metrorail Protection Servicesofficials and contracted security firms to re-move vagrants in railway precincts.“Without permanent accommodation all
efforts usually result in temporary displace-ment and vagrants returning once law en-forcement has withdrawn. Several other in-terventions are being considered,” he said.
Vagrants upset the Vasco station peace
Vasco station is dirty and has vagrants living next to the railway.

A 12-year-old local schoolboy of Sonstraal inDurbanville is looking for used Bibles, espe-cially Bibles for children, to hand out to theunderprivileged in Fisantekraal and else-where.
Jason de Wet, a Grade 6 pupil at GeneLouw Primary School, reached out to thecommunity in Fisantekraal onMandelaDayand gave 20 children their own children’s Bi-bles. He also distributed about 70 Bibles tochildren in the Aandskof informal settle-ment.
He collected unused children’s Biblesfrom his school and also got donations of Bi-bles from elsewhere. The Bible Society ofSouth Africa donated 40 Bibles and agreedto give Bibles to him at cost price.
He arrived at the offices of the Bible Socie-ty of South Africa with a neatly typed outletter with his request.
Inhis letter, hemotivatedhisneed for chil-dren’s Bibles, stating that the children canread the Bibles by themselves, and do notneed an adult to help them.
Jason started his project as a Mr JuniorHope finalist. TheHope pageant is aWesternCape pageant, giving children the opportu-nity to touch other needy children’s livesand to spread hope around the WesternCape.
The finalists and their projects fall underActingHope, a charitable project foundedbyMrs UN Western Cape, Ingrid Burger, whois also a teacher at Gene Louw PrimarySchool.

President kraai koning

SAREL BURGER
VerskuldigDie HS Tygerberg is egter ’n verduideli-
Ander wenspanne was Tygerberg-klub
Durbies klop Vics net-net

SAREL BURGER

All roads lead to Cravenby on Sunday whenRiverside Rangers face Invincible Cravenbyin a derby match of the Northern SuburbsFootball Association Super League.Pierre Swartz, the Riverside Rangers’ left-
back and former Invincible Cravenby play-er, says the team know how important three
points from the match against his formerteam will be for their title hopes.“They’ll be coming at us hard because
they want revenge. We have already set astandard for ourselves by beating BelharSpurs 4-1, now we have to maintain it.’’Swartz added that he is particularly
pleased with the team spirit and the contri-bution by the new recruits to the team. “The
teamspirit amongst the guys is at an all-timehigh. The new guys in the team raised thelevel of competition, and that can only leadto a stronger squad. The fact thatmost of thenew players are so doing well and are con-tributing to the team’s good start, motivatesthe rest of the guys to work even harder.”As far as his individual performance is
concerned, he is pleased with how he has
fared so far, adding that there are still someareas of his game that he is working onsharpening up.Coach Leslie Mondo knows it won’t be a
walk in the park, he is not expecting Invinci-ble Cravenby to roll over and die. He hascalled for cool heads and total disciplinefrom his charges, and that they give Invinci-ble the respect they deserve on the pitch.
Riverside fired up to collect three-point victory

The organisers of the 2013 South AfricanMaster’s Softball Championship havepromised good softball and a fun atmos-
phere when the tournament takes place.FalconsMasters Softball Club will host the
tournament this year, with the Old MutualSports Complex and neighbouring Oude Mo-len High School in Pinelands as the venues.Maureen Jangle, former president of West-
ern Province Softball and chairperson of thelocal organising committee, says the champi-onship will feature teams from across SA.“Although this is serious, it’s also fun. You
can enter as a club or as a province. We (willbe hosting) provincial and club teams fromBorder, KwaZulu-Natal and all over,” shesays.“Falcons have participated in the tourna-
ment for the last five years and theyhavewonand beenunbeaten in the last three. The tour-nament is allocated to a different province
each year and they offered it to Falcons thisyear.”Themaster’s division is for anyplayer over
the age of 35 and the tournament has men’sand women’s competitions.Apart from Falcons, the other Cape Town
clubs who have entered teams this year areGlenthorne Athletics, Pirates, Old MutualCubs and Hamiltons.Jangle says Falcons decided to host the
tournament in Pinelands because TurfhallSports Complex, the location of Cape Town’sonly softball stadium, is currently being usedfor football fixtures. The venue also has therequired space and facilities, such as a club-house.Falcons have had to fund the tournament
themselves and have been hard at work se-curing sponsors.“Old Mutual and Oude Molen let us have
the fields free of charge, but we will make adonation to the school,” says Jangle.Phone Malcolm Jenner on 076 765 5830.

The former Bellville Peninsula CricketAcademy has been given a new lease onlife, with Tertius Engelbrecht having re-cently taken over the reins. Now known as the Peninsula Cricket
Academy, the club will once again becomecricket heaven for aspirant players.Things haven’t gone at that well in re-
cent times; and now that is all about tochange.“Apart from the indoor facilities at New-
lands, we are the only other venue withproper indoor coaching facilities. We wantto provide a space for players of all agesto hone their skills and better their game,”said new owner, Tertius Engelbrecht. The academy produced SA players like
HayesVanDenBerg and JanFrylinck; andprovincial players Chad Johnson, DevonVan Rensburg and Wian Engelbrecht areknown to have honed their skills here too.“We have really good coaches. Take Paul
Jacobs for instance, who is a Level 3 coach. He was the Western Province u-17 b coachand is its currently u-19b coach. Then wealso have Mario Stoop, Pierre Erasmus,Phila Mthiyane and myself,” Engelbrechtadded. The academy will be open on Mondays
to Saturdays from 14:00 to 21:00.There are five nets with a bowling ma-
chine. There is a shop that will sell equip-ment and something to eat and drink. The academy will enter five teams be-
tween the age groups of u-9 to u-13 in theschools league. They also plan to offer rural teams the
free use of the facility once a month forthem to practise and improve their skills.V Phone Tertius Engelbrecht on 084 433 0857 formore information.
