QCommitment to quality
Agrowingnumberofcompaniesnow
realizethat investing inquality isoneof themost
importantcommitments theycanmake for their
future.
Variousqualitystandardshaveexisted
in Europe formany years, each focusing on a
particularindustrysectorormarketsegment.
In 1985 the International Standards
Organisation (ISO) brought these standards
together to form the ISO9000seriesofnorms,
whichwereadoptedbytheEuropeanCommission
as general guidelines for all companies in the
membercountriesoftheEuropeanUnion.
IncommonwithothercompaniesTyco
Electronics-thereforehasmadethecommitment
to invest inqualityfor itsfutureandhasachieved
ISO9001certification - themostcomprehensive
normoftheISO9000series.
This is an on-going process which
guarantees theconsistentqualityofourproducts
to our customers. We, at TycoElectronics, are
notcontenttostopthereandwewillcontinueto
striveforevenhigherqualitystandards.

Heat-shrinkable products crosslinking through radiation chemistry
Thermoplast ic mater ia ls arecomposed of extremely long, very thinmolecules in a random arrangement. The strength of such materials dependsupon the distance between its moleculesand the crystalline nature of itsmolecularstructure. Figure1 schematically illustratesthemolecular structure of a thermoplasticmaterial. The crysta ls formed wherethe molecules come closer together arerepresentedbydots.Itisthesecrystalswhichprovidemostofthestrengthofthematerial. As the material is heated, thecrystalsdisappear. Themolecules can thenslippasteachothereasilyand thematerialflows. While in this heated condition, thematerial may be formed into almost anydesired shape. Then, when the materialsubsequently isallowed tocool, thecrystalsreformandagainprovidesubstantialstrengthto retain theplastic in theshape inwhich ithasbeenformed. With the advent of atomic energy, theimportant discovery was made that theexposure of some plastic materials tohigh-energypenetrating radiationcancausethepermanentcrosslinkingor intermolecularjo in ing of adjacent molecules . Thiscrosslinking results in thechemicalbondingof the plastic structure into a new three-dimensionalnetwork.
Figure2 illustrates themolecularstructureof suchasystemafterexposure toradiation, withthecrosslinksshownasheavylines.Once thematerial has been crosslinked, itwill not flowat any temperature. When thematerial isheated, thecrystalsstilldisappearasbefore, butitwillnolongerfloworchangeshape because the crosslinks act as tiesbetween the molecules. The crosslinkedstructure, however, iselastic.Thuswhen it isheated toa temperaturewhere thecrystalshavemelted, thematerialbehaveslikerubber. The un ique heat -shr inkab leproperties of Tyco Electronics products isobtained through the exposure of specialthermoplastic formulations to radiation.Because of the resultant crosslinking, such products have good elasticmemory.Theseproducts are supplied in adeformedor expanded condition to cover the objectaroundwhich theyhavebeenplaced. Theyare ideal for coveringa varietyof electricalandelectroniccomponents, aswellaswires, lugs, terminalsandconnectors. Inmanufacturing theseproducts,TycoElectronicsfabricatesitscompoundsintotheirfinalformandthensubjectsthemtohighenergyradiation, thuspermanently “freezing”them into thedesired shape. The followingillustrationsdemonstratewhathappenstothemolecularstructureduringsubsequentstagesofmanufactureandduringapplication.Nexttoeachillustrationisanend-viewofapieceofheat-shrinkabletubing.

longmolecules.
Whilehot,thetubingisdeformedbyapplying
pressure, thus stretching the crosslinked
molecule,seeFigure5.
While in thisdeformedshape, the tubing is
cooled, the crystals then reappear, thereby
locking the structure togetherpermanently
in thisdeformedcondition.This is the form
in which tubing is supplied to customers.
(Figure)
Thecustomer thenheats the tubing,melting
thecrystals.Thecrosslinksallowthematerial
to return to its original shape as shown in
Figure below. This is the good elastic
memoryofsuchtubing.
After cooling, the crystals re-form and the
tubing is locked in its recovered form, as
showninFigure8.
Uponsubsequentreheatingnofurtherchange
in shapewill takeplaceunlessmechanical
forceisapplied.
Once the tubinghas been crosslinked, the
next step in impartingelasticmemory is to
heat the compound above its crystalline
meltingpoint. Themolecules are then tied
togetheronlyby thecrosslinksas shown in
Figure.

underthefamilynameofFOSC.
In the 90’s Tyco Electronics introduced a
modular, end-to-end fiber infrastructure
system for metro and access networks
using the familynameof FIST. It expanded
the application range from outside plant
to exchanges, head-ends, street cabinets
and customerpremises sites. In addition it
expanded the fibermanagement capability
