In the morning, we will take you on a guided tour of The French Concession, Tianzifang &Sinan Mansions. These charming Art Deco buildings may make you feel like you’re in a European city as you stroll (or cycle) down the tree-lined streets and alleys which compose these neighborhoods.

As a side trip, visit the Shanghai Propaganda Art Museum. Here, you will be able to see the images Mao and the CPC used to sway a nation against the principles of capitalism. A fascinating insight into China’s collective and recent national psyche.

As a counterpoint, your tour will continue with a modern view into the ‘New China’. First, take a charming detour through People’s Park. Here you can watch traditions such as Tai Chi and parents ‘match-making’ their children. Afterwards you will visit the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art. In this magnificent museum you will be able to view cutting-edge trends of China’s cultural community. Afterwards, a sumptuous French picnic will be arranged for you in the park.

In the evening, you can return to your hotel or discover its surroundings by yourselves.

We are happy to make several recommendations as to the tastiest restaurants and hippest nightclubs which populate Shanghai.

Today will be a day for walking and exploring the beauty of Guangxi.

About 600 years ago, the Longsheng Rice Terraces have been cultivated on the high mountainsby 2 ethnic groups, generation after generation. Nowadays, the Zhuang and Yao people still keep the original farming practice. You can enjoy the scenery of the rice terraces which are built on the steep hill slopes.

You will also meet some of the local minority people that live in wooden houses and work in the rice fields (some walking-up steps is required to enjoy these terraces, though nothing beyond standard fitness levels are required).

Trying the local food is also a part of the trip. For dining, several local farmers’ restaurants are available near the attractions. You will be able to try authentic Chinese food, as the locals do, in one of the most beautiful settings of China.*

*2.5 hours driving to Longsheng Terrace from Guilin. Upon arrival the guide will take you up into the hillside village of Ping’an and surrounding viewpoints for amazing views. Expect to walk about 2 hours or so in total, less if you wish. The climbs are mild but some steps are unavoidable. The drive back is also 2.5 hours approximately.

Afterwards, you will return to your hotel, for a restful night with amazing views.

After this scenic drive you will arrive at a local market. The local market is not a typical tourist market but a market for local goods. Villagers from the area come for shopping, which make it an interesting and vibrant place. Then, we keep driving about half an hour to Fuli, where we will depart for our private raft downthe Li River. We will be drifting in peace for roughly an hour on the Li River. Along the way you will learn about the importance of different river sites. Gorgeous Karst Peaks pointing out under the blue sky give you surprises at each bend of the limpid.

Water buffaloes patrol the fields, peasants reap rice paddies, school kids and fisherman float-by on bamboo rafts, and feather-like bamboo trees line on the banks.

After this mesmerizing experience, we will take you to Pam Dimon’s cooking school: Here, with the cooking school team of Pam Dimon and Jackie Tang, you will be learning the methods and techniques of Guangxi Province and Chinese cuisines.

Afterwards, we will return you to your hotel in Guilin. Total driving time today is about 4 hours

From the Drum Tower the views are wonderful, taking in the rooftops of the Hutongs and the old way of life below. We end the walk at Houhai, the ‘Black Lake’, a favorite with elderly locals who still come here to dance, play badminton, practice Tai Chi and enjoy the atmosphere.

Reviews | What clients say

MJ planned an excellent leisure trip for me to Japan and China in July-August 2014. The trip was 2 weeks and included all hotels, both long haul and short hall flights, trains, local transportation, dinner reservations each night, and full day guides in each city. Cities visited included Tokyo, Kyoto, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The trip was planned and executed flawlessly. There was not one detail, reservation, travel arrangement that was miscommunicated or out of order. For this to occur on a two week, complex, international itinerary speaks volumes to the quality, reliability, and thoroughness of Marc and Mandarin Journeys. The guides in each city superb and highly knowledgeable re. the local sights, culture, languages, and transportation. Stayed in a older courtyard house/hotel in Beijing (Hans Royal Garden) and 300 year old Ryokan in Kyoto. The trip was thoroughly enjoyed. MJ even arranged vintage motorcycles with side cars as the transportation from central Beijing to a non touristy, less travelled part of the Great Wall. I highly recommend Mandarin Journeys for anyone that wants a non touristy, comprehensive trip to the Far East

Mr Steve Randich – CIO Finra, former CIO Citigroup

Our family recently used Mandarin Journeys for a 3-week/5 destinations trip to China and Thailand, and we highly recommend them. They were attentive and responsive during the planning process, which for us involved multiple changes along the way, and they helped us manage everything seamlessly. They designed a premium, customized program with activities suited to us and expert guides who completely enhanced the experience. And they were in touch throughout to ensure things went according to plan. They took the time to understand what wewere looking for and delivered beyond our expectations. I'm sure we will be "repeat" customers.
