TWO MINISTRIES, ONE NUMBER By: Nelia Navarrete (Order of Franciscan Seculars and Health Care Ministry) Buling-buling is the local version of Mardi Gras aka Fat Tuesday. It refers to the carnival celebrations beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Members of the Order of Franciscan Seculars joined with the Health Care Ministry in presenting a Beatles song and dance number. This was in joyful compliance with SSAP’s theme for Buling-buling “Let It Be” by the Beatles. Practice for the event started on the last week of January. Twice a week, the ladies would rehearse for 2 hours making it seem like Lent had already begun. Profuse perspiration, shortness of breath, letting go of previous commitments -- so as not to miss practice --became our way of life. On those days it was common for anyone to stop, pull a chair and rest. Above it all was our dance instructors call, “deep breathing ladies, inhale and exhale through your mouth.” Each one brought their jug of water and took generous, life-restoring sips at every pit stop. But once we heard the clap that signaled the restart of the practice, we all quickly got back up to take our positions. The TWIST seemed quite an easy thing to do, since that was the popular dance step at that time. But reality set in as soon as we started. The waist, knees and toes no longer coordinated with each other. A big “Thank you!” to our dance instructors for the patience and tolerance they showed us. Our Beatles’ look-alikes were played by three members of the Order of Franciscan Seculars and joined by one member of Health Care Ministry. Buling-buling is the local version of Mardi Gras aka Fat Tuesday.

PARISH BULLETIN

How many of us living in the Philippines have come across this term outside of Santuario de San Antonio? I certainly hadn’t nor had my wife, Apple – but she’s Manileña, perhaps that matters? When I told two of my dearest Filipina friends last year that I was going to participate in Buling-Buling! 2017, both responded “Ano ba ito?” One from Bukidnon, the other, Romblon. Indeed my father-in-law, a Batangueño, asked “Ano ga ‘to?”

This year I was less overwhelmed by my three left feet (one keeps insisting it’s a right foot), and I realized that Buling-Buling! is much much more than learn, practice, perform, photoshoot, eat.

This year, EMHC (Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion) put on their fi rst solo act ever. Last year, 2 of us danced with the poised and elegant ladies of LeCom. But for 2018, the graceful-as-a-kalabaw EMHCs decided to up the ante and ‘go solo’.

Recruitment challenges! The call went out on Viber, a few accepted immediately, and others demurred. Soon we had a small but viable kernel! Then others stepped up, after being cornered.

Ma’am Tess Samaniego agreed to coach us. But, alas, she and Bro Cris fell ill. Ric took on his wife’s role and his concept of “When I’m 64” blossomed, but we were short of young vivacious actors. And, of course, more

mature versions of young vivacious actors. Norman’s Miss Kirsten (who is incidentally the youngest member of LeCom) agreed to link arms with Arne on the promenade, and Mrs. Vic Cruz skipped in as a much younger ‘64’. We were fi nally set! With the rugged young Jojo as Paul, Jun as Lennon, Totoy, Vic and Ric on wind, and Norman batting vellum.

Ric’s concept of “In my life” was going to be a hit, but we did not know how to execute it. Ma’am Bernie from the offi ce, scraped painfully and long through her treasure trove of old SSAP photos, and Totoy’s daughters, Amara and Zara, stepped in and proved to be patient, competent AV craftswomen.

Again and again, they revised the background video to fi t Jun’s audio clip, and fi nally dollied up the cardboard drumkit into the piece of art it was on stage. No doubt Ma’am Deisa had to calm father and daughters. Norman’s Miss Caitlyn polished the wannabe Beatles’ act with constructive critique.

All this that made me understand what Buling-Buling! really is. Buling-Buling! is community. It’s about individuals. It’s about teams. It’s about the performances. It’s about the audience. It’s about Christ, whose Salvation we are preparing to share.

You see, Buling-Buling! is about LOVE.

The Parish Pastoral Council pulled an ace with the announcement that Music -- composed, sang and played by The Beatles, the original moptops from Liverpool -- was the theme of this year’s Buling-Buling. Jumping Jiminy Cricket! This was the music of baby boomers, author included. Dare me to listen to a few bars and I will name you the song, throwing in some groovy dancing moves.

The LeComs therefore put on their dancing shoes again, going past burning issues like aching bones and stiff muscles. Cecile, Cynthia, Karen, Isa, Micki, Jaime and Randy chose Beatles with a Latin twist to breathe variety and, rock up the fl oor.

Mauwey’s choreography freed the song “Hey Jude” with a combination of eye-catching footwork (guaranteed to tangle toes and ankles if you were not nimble enough to keep pace). What was Mauwey’s constant nagging reminder? Keep the head aloof looking straight ahead while the back must be kept fl uidly in line with the waist, never, ever falling behind; Ladies must sculpt a sweet smile with every infl ection of hands and fi ngers!

I wondered. “How can they remember every step and still keep the body elegant?”

Everybody was already swaying gaily to this infectious salza, mambo beat when the ladies drew a path for Jaime and Randy to alter the tempo. Enter the standard, full-throated, bubbly, bouncy boogie of “All My Loving”, totally unpredicted that drew an audience into clapping with glee. Why? It was youthful exuberance, so telling of fi rst love and the unexplained jumping of the heart, including that fl oating-on-air bit. This was our 60’s ushered into a mixed audience of diff erent age groups, all loving the same kind of sounds.

Close your eyes, the LeComs danced straight into our hearts.

Yeah, yeah, yeah!

PARISH BULLETIN

60’s dance moves, fun practices, inside jokes, and good company. Those are the four things that pretty much summed up our Buling-Buling experience.

Other than knowing that there would be many performances by the San Antonio community and that we would get treated after we performed, we didn’t really know what to expect. This has only been my second time helping out, while it was Enrica’s fi rst. We decided to join our Luke community’s dance because we thought that it would be a really fun experience for the both of us and in the end, we weren’t disappointed!

When we fi rst signed up, we thought that we would just learn a dance to a song by the Beatles, but to our surprise, we ended up needing to choreograph it as well! It wasn’t that long, only about a minute, but it wasn’t that easy. We didn’t really know where to start because fi rst off , we aren’t dancers; second, we never lived in the 60s, so we didn’t really know how people used to dance back then.

So whom did we turn to? Google.

We watched a video to get in the groove with the 60’s, and in an hour, we were fi nished! It might not have been the most professional dance, but it worked and we rolled with it. Tito Rocky was supportive of it too! (Since no moves would lead to breaking a hip).

If it weren’t for the people who joined us during the two practices that we had, we don’t think that our experience would have been so memorable and enjoyable. We shared many laughs with people who we wouldn’t really get the opportunity to interact with, because of various diff erences, so this was a great chance for all of us to actually get-to-know each other. We fi nally got the chance to see who the people of the San Antonio community were.

Overall, Buling-Buling this year was defi nitely unforgettable for us and we believe that it was the right way to start off the Lenten season -- with the parishioners of San Antonio.
