Two-Letter Blends

(Eyerobics)

Now we shall learn some CONSONATES, and combine themwith vowels to make two-leer blends. (A consonant is any leer

that is not a vowel.)

Being able to blend leers together is a new skill. It may not

be easy at rst, but it is very important. This is the step that will

train your eye muscles to track (move) together smoothly from

le to right across the page, and read whole sentences and

books. Blending pracce is really good exerciseit is like

aerobics for the eyes. In fact, lets call it eyerobics because that

is exactly what it iseye-robics exercise for the eyes.

Eyerobics begins with two-leer blends, connuing with sin-gle words, two-word phrases, and nally sentences of slowly in-

creasing complexity. Long words are read by syllables (that is, the

smallest part of a word can be broken intousually two or three

leer blends). You will be able to read the longest word in the

whole world, syllable by syllablewithout guessing. Just as we

build bricks to make houses, we build syllables to make words.

And we build words to make books!
