AS AT NOVEMBER 2015 Southern Downs Regional Council area Purpose This snapshot provides an overview of arts and culture in the Southern Downs Regional Council area. It includes demographic information, local plans strategies and priorities, Arts Queensland funding investment and other relevant arts and cultural information such as, arts and cultural infrastructure, events, festivals and key contacts. The snapshot is intended to inform connections and partnership development within and across Government agencies, industry, professional groups and the community. Overview Southern Downs Regional Council Local Government Area (LGA) is located 2 hour drive west of Brisbane. The area includes National parks, historic townships, bush walks, scenic mountain views, vineyards and farmlands. The Council was formed in 2008 by the amalgamation of Stanthorpe and Warwick Shires. The new council extends along the New South Wales border from the Main Range National Park, east of Killarney, to beyond the Girraween National Park. Well over half of the Southern Downs Regional Council is border ranges and foothills, and the remainder in the north is the true Southern Downs. There are two main towns, Stanthorpe 30 km and Warwick 80 km, from the Qld/NSWborder. Covering an area of 7122 sq. km, the Southern Downs services an economic catchment area of 55,000 people. Townships within the region repeatedly record a low cost of living with economical house, land and building costs a key attraction. As at 2014, a preliminary resident population was 35,716 and the percentage of Indigenous persons in the region was 3.3%. The Keinjan, Kambuwal, Jocumwal and Githubal peoples historically lived in areas now known as Southern Downs. Other towns in the region are: Nobby, Clifton, Leyburn, Killarney, Ballandean, Inglewood, Texas, Bonshaw, Maryvale, Dalveen and Elbow Valley. Purpose This snapshot provides an overview of arts and culture in the Southern Downs Regional Council area. Overview of arts and culture Southern Downs Regional Council area has an active arts and cultural scene which is well supported by the Regional Council.

Council is part of the Regional Arts Development Fund program, a partnership between state and local government to support artists and artsworkers in regional Queensland.
