Weld-type lifting / lashing points serve to secure components / loads by
lifting respectively lashing gear to enable safe transportation.
This operating manual includes information on how lifting and lashing
points of the following types are safely used and assembled:
TWN 0119 Lifting point, weld-type
TWN 0124 Lifting point, weld-type, with spring
TWN 1880 Lashing point, weld-type, with spring
TWN = THIELE plant standard
Read this manual before using lifting / lashing points. Store this manual
until the lifting / lashing points are shut down.
Product Description 1
Weld-type lifting / lashing points mainly consist of a weld-on support and a
ring. With exception of the TWN 0119 lifting points springs are integrated in
the weld-on support. They provide position stabilization and noise reduction
when not in use.
Lifting / lashing points can be loaded to 100% in all tensile directions.
Lifting points are marked with the working load limit (WLL) in tons.
Lashing points are marked with the lashing capacity (LC) in daN
(decanewton).
This indication only applies to the lifting / lashing point itself and not to the
overall load or suspension gear used. Withdraw the working load limit
depending on the mode from chapter 4.
Working load limits as well as product and test requirements are based on
the standards DIN EN 1677-1 and DIN EN 1677-4.

The lifting points are in conformity with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EG,
marked with the CE symbol and have a safety factor of min. 4 relating to
their working load limit. The lifting points have been type tested by
‘Berufsgenossenschaft Holz und Metall’ and marked with the H 4-stamp.
Intended Use 2
The lifting / lashing points are intended for attachment to steel structures.
They serve to connect these structures to lifting respectively lashing gear
used for safe transportation.
The lifting / lashing points must exclusively be used
as prescribed by their permissible working load limit or lashing
capacity,
withing the temperature limits prescribed,
with properly laid welding seams.
Products according to TWN 0119 or TWN 0124 may also be used as
lashing points. The lashing capacity is calculated as the double of the
working load limit.
An alternating usage as lifting and lashing points is not allowed!

3.1 Personnel
Operators must familiarize themselves with this operating manual as
well as regulation BGR 500, Chapter 2.8 „Betreiben von Last-
aufnahmeeinrichtungen im Hebezeugbetrieb“ (Use of load suspension
devices for hoisting purposes) as issued by German Accident
Prevention and Insurance Association.
Mounting and removal must exclusively be carried out by authorized
persons.
Consider the 'BG-Information 556' while operating.
Outside the Federal Republic of Germany the specific provisions issued
locally in the country where the items are used must also be observed.
3.2 Product Safety
Risk of Injury
Make sure to use lifting / lashing points free from defects.
Never use worn-out, bent or damaged lifting / lashing points.
Never make structural changes to lifting points (e.g. by grinding or
bending).
3.3 Use
Risk of Injury
Never stay under lifted loads.
Only lift loads the weight of which is less than or equal to the carrying
capacity of the suspension gear.
Never subject lifting / lashing points to loads higher than their specified
working load limit or lashing force.
Do not use force when mounting/positioning the lifting / lashing points.
Do not start lifting before you have made sure that the load has been
correctly attached.
Never move a suspended load over persons.

When lifting loads make sure your hands or other body parts do not
come into contact with the suspension gear.
Never cause a suspended load to swing.
Make sure lifting points are mounted above the load’s center of
gravity.
The mounting location of the lifting points on the component must be
suited for the forces admitted via the lifting point to be safely absorbed
without the component suffering deformation.
Lifting / lashing points are not approved for passenger transportation.

5.1 Preparations
Make sure the welding surfaces are flat, dry, free of impurity, flawless and
weldable (C-content between 0,25% and 0,39%). Make sure the weld area
at the component is able to absorb the input force without safety reducing
deformation.
5.2 Mounting the lifting / lashing point
Mount the lifting / lashing point so that
no areas of danger (crushing points, shear zones, penetration points)
are created,
they do not interfere the transport because of overhang,
mounted lifting / lashing devices (usually hooks) are freely moveable
and not stressed by bending,
prohibited orders, for example excentric loads are avoided,
the suspension gear cannot be damaged e.g. by sharp edges,
they are freely accessible and can be used without any interference.
Make sure the weld seam area at the component is large enough for the
lifting / lashing points to be safely attached by welding.
Observe welding instructions in chapter 9.

6.1 Use under Normal Conditions
The ring must always be freely
movable. It must not rest on or be
supported by other structural parts.
6.2 Influence of Temperature
Lifting points
The permissible working load limit of the lifting points reduces at elevated
temperatures.
The reduced working load limit figures shown in the following table shall
only apply for short-term use at the temperatures indicated.
TWN 0119, TWN 0124 (Grade 8):

After warming the products above the maximum usage temperature range
they must not be used again.
Lashing points
Usage temperature range for lashing points: -20 °C to +200 °C.
6.3 Environmental Influence
Using the products in the surrounding area of acid, aggressive or corrosive
chemicals or their vapors is prohibited.
Inspections / Disposal 7
Check the lifting / lashing points visually at regular intervals.
The results of the inspection of the lifting points shall be entered into a
register to be prepared when the lifting point is first used. This register
includes characteristics of the lifting point as well as identification
particulars (Declaration of conformity / Inspection certificate).

An inspection must be carried out at least once a year or more frequent if
the lifting points are in heavy-duty service. After three years at the latest the
lifting points shall be examined for cracks.
The condition of lifting point and its components must be documented
during these inspections. When making repairs to lifting points note down
the cause of the defect and the remedial action that has been taken.
Immediately stop using lifting / lashing points that show the following
defects:
Deformation
cuts, notches, cracks, incipient cracks
Rings cannot freely rotate or turn
heating beyond permissible limits
Severe corrosion
Wear, e.g. exceeding 10% in the ring diameter area
Identification marks are unreadable
Defective or non-conforming welds
Dispose of worn out products according to local regulations.
Storage / Packaging 8
Store the lifting / lashing points in dry space at temperatures between 0 °C
and +40 °C.
Dispose of packaging according to local regulations.

Welding instructions relating to weld-on supports (S355NL or similar) to be
attached to C22, S235, S355 or similar components.

Welding must exclusively performed by trained and authorized personnel
qualified as per EN 287.
Do not weld on the coloured bracket!
Preweld Treatment:

Miscellaneous:
1. Min. notched-bar impact strength values of ISO-V specimens
KV = 27 J at -40 °C (e.g. S355J4G3 or S355NL, EN10025)
2. When selecting material grades other than those listed above please
contact the base material and filler metal manufacturers for
information.
3. The responsible welding supervisor must make sure the welding
current is correctly adjusted to suit the given welding position. The
qualification has to be in accordance with ISO 14731.
