TWILIGHT MARKET - Kalinda Primary School...TERM DATES 2016 Term 4 3 October to Tuesday, 20 December...

1 Newsletter No. 36 - Term 4 Week 7 Thursday 17 November 2016 From the Principal………. TWILIGHT MARKET What a terrific time everyone had at our Twilight Market last Friday. The weather was beautiful (compared to last year!) and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and catching up with friends. We had lots of positive comments during the week from people who had been there so our Fundraising Committee is feeling very positive and looking towards future events. Thank you to everybody involved in the market, who were ably led by the Fundraising Committee. The organisation of the stalls in the stadium and the general smooth running of the market really supported the total fundraising for our school which provides programs for our children. We have had an evaluation of the things we could do more of and one, of course, is the food stalls. Next time we will have lots more! We hope you all enjoyed the wonderful entertainment on the night which included our terrific Highland Dancers, led by our lovely Cheryl Henry-Wild. The girls did a fantastic job and everyone seemed to enjoy their performances. We then had some student entertainment and, my goodness, what talented students we have in the school. Then, our Parent Band finished the night rocking away! It certainly made packing up enjoyable listening to them as the night turned very dark. Thank you again to Tony Landi, Lindsey Baker, Jo O’Callaghan and the many helpers on the Fundraising Committee, and those who joined in on the night to support us. I know we were all extremely tired after packing up but very enthusiastic to plan the next event.

REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY We must remember that last Friday was Remembrance Day. Our Student Leadership Team and I attended at the Clock Tower in Ringwood to give our respects. Our students laid a wreath in remembrance, representing our school in a very respectful manner. As always I am very proud to take our children to these events.

WANTED – CANTEEN MANAGER! Jo O’Callaghan, our lovely Canteen Manager, is taking on another role outside of the school. We are, therefore, offering an opportunity to someone who would love to work with us as our Canteen Manager. The role is for 20 hours per week, over 4 days, Tuesday to Friday, to begin in Week 1 next year. As you know our Canteen is a healthy food canteen and the role would involve cooking, food preparation, lunchtime sales, rosters and minimal administration. The successful applicant would have to undertake appropriate food-handling courses. A current Working with Children Check is also required. As Jo would still be working in the school with P&F and Fundraising, she will be available for training and support. This is an ideal opportunity for all you cooks out there to share your skills with us. Please do not hesitate to ring the office to make any enquiries and to apply for the position. A short application would need to be submitted by 9am on Friday 2

nd December.

From Junior School Council... As you are aware, last weekend members of the Kalinda community participated in

the Cancer Council’s annual Relay for Life. At the start of the year, the students at

Kalinda Primary School told the Junior School Council that they wanted to raise

funds to support the Cancer Council and Relay for Life.

With the Twilight Market, our school events calendar was too busy to organise our

fundraiser to fall in the same week as the Relay. So, on Thursday 1st December, to

kick off the Christmas Season and to raise funds for the Cancer Council, we would like

all Students and Staff at Kalinda to bring a gold coin and come to school dressed in

something ‘Christmassy’: it might be a red or green coloured T-Shirt, a red shiny nose, a

tinsel scarf, perhaps even a Santa suit?

JUNIOR SCHOOL COUNCIL

Letter to Santa Kalinda Primary School

If you would like to send a letter to Santa and receive a response from him,

please do the following:

Write your letter to Santa and deposit it in the green and red box on the Library desk by 2:00pm on Friday, 2nd December.

This will ensure that Santa receives your letter

and writes back to you by the end of the school term.

Thank you. Hope you all have a lovely Christmas!

FOUNDATION NEWS

What a beautiful morning we had in Foundation! The sun is finally shining, so the children sat outside for their Writer’s Workshop. We wrote about all the different things we could see and hear. We used lots of describing words and enjoyed reading our writing to our peers.

A snapshot from our ‘Outdoor Writer’s Workshop' I can see the leaves soaring in the wind very calmly, the sunshine high up in the blue sky and some

clouds. Jazlyn C.

I can see an aeroplane in the sky and I can see some flowers dancing in the sun. Sayane O.H.

I hear birds tweeting and leaves rustling. I see green grass and flowers dancing in the wind. Amelia M.

I can feel the breeze gently blowing on my cheek. It feels nice when the breeze blows on my cheeks. I

saw the birds and they were tweeting. Ruby P.

I can see some flowers. Billie J.

I can see a plane. Caeleb M.R.

I can hear aeroplanes flying above in the sky. I can see a dancing flower in the wind. I can feel some

wind blowing around my hand. I can see the sunshine in my eyes. Mijia Z.

I can hear some magpies chatting in the distance and I hear some cars on the road and I am happy.

Lachlan B.

I can see the burning hot sun and it makes me feel really happy. I can feel the wind and it almost blows

me away. Harley C.

I can see some flowers dancing in the wind. I can see tree branches blowing a little. Charlotte P.

I can hear magpies tweeting and trees blowing in the wind softly. I can see green grass everywhere and

Branch Out Japan Trip ---- Home stay experience My host family was really nice to me. They knew a little bit of English, enough that we could communicate. Hitoaki, Jonko, Aika and Yuki were so nice I can’t put it in words. Everyone in Japan are always smiling even when you can’t communicate with them. One night I felt homesick and my host family let me call Hiromi Sensei, Hiromi Sensei was there for me she helped me a lot. Aika, Yuki and I played hide and seek it was so much fun we would hide each other in pillows, and try to find each other. In my information letter I had to fill out to send to my host family I wrote that I liked Hello Kitty, my host family organised to go to Hello Kitty World. They were so nice to me and because of them I really, really, really want to go there again. By Michi 5/6 C

Congratulations to those children who completed the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. Certificates have now arrived and as most children at Kalinda completed the Challenge we have over 350 certificates to award! Over the coming weeks, certificates will be awarded to a small amount of randomly chosen children at assembly. Children who do not receive their certificate at assembly will be awarded it in their class. Congratulations once again to everyone who completed the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. I can’t wait until the Challenge begins again in 2017! Happy reading!

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 4 – Week 6

Dear Parents/Guardians, Hello and welcome to OSH News. This week we celebrated Remembrance Day and National Kindness Week. We made poppy prints with our fingers and a giant poppy for our display boards. We talked about gratitude and the things we are grateful for. We have been focussing on respect, kindness and friendship encouraging our children to work as a team and explaining the importance of being inclusive. We love being outdoors as much as possible in the sun; a kind reminder to please ensure you pack your sun hats – you can always leave them here. On our menu this week were fruit platters, Cheese Toasties, Smoothies, Cheese and Crackers, Milo and Pita bread with dips. Jalen, Thomas V and Alexander have been practicing their Cubby building skills whilst Seb has been ensuring everyone is kept safe with regular building inspections. We are again getting very near quota on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Please ensure you book in early to avoid late fees and ensure we are well catered for. 2017 is fast approaching and bookings will open in late November for next year. Thank you all so much for the generous donations – we always appreciate books, Dress Up’s, colouring in books, board games and more. We would really appreciate any gardening supplies you may want to clear out – we would love to create a veggie / herb patch.

Our Family communication book is always on the sign on desk for anyone wishing to leave comments, suggestions or queries. We appreciate your feedback for our program and our team. We are available during program hours on 0439 992 434. Feel free to leave a voicemail message if we are unavailable. We are also contactable at [email protected].
