TWFF FLY-LINES

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a long break since the last TWFF outing in May, on the S. Llano in Junction, TX. Unofficial TWFF Outing to Taos Area

We had the unofficial outing for Taos, Angel Fire, and Eagles Nest planned this year but things were not in our favor to fish New Mexico the week of June 23–30. We fished the only areas that were accessible, due to fire closures we ended up in Southern Colo-rado instead of New Mexico. (cont’d pg. 9)

Sargent, Texas 2018 Saltwater Outing by Kate Allen WHEN: Friday October 5-Saturday October 6

WHERE: East Matagorda Bay & Caney Creek

EVENT COST: $25 for Saturday evening’s fish fry meal and administrative costs

MEETING LOCATION:

OUTING COORDINATORS: Kate Allen and Julie Sieh with assistance from Peggy Carl, Mary Rohrer, and Beverly Gordon FISHING FOR: Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Flounder to name a few. Other species that may be caught include Sheepshead, Black Drum, Sand Trout, Croaker, and Lady Fish.

Accommodations: Vacation Rental Houses are all located on the water with private piers for night fishing. There is one small motel in Sargent, “Fish Tale Inn.” Two RV hookups are available at our location close to TWFF activities, and there are several RV Parks nearby. See pages 5 and 6.

Guides: Some people will choose to hire a guide for the days before, during, or after the event. There are several guides in the area who fish using conventional tackle. Though they do not fly fish them-selves, a few of those are willing to take Fly Fishers to areas they think are productive for fly fishing. There are a fewer number of fly fishing guides available. Please see Guide list attached and call soon if you are interested as this is a very popular time of year for fishing. Tentative Outing Schedule: Friday October 5: Check into rental houses or campgrounds. Mullet Mixer Gathering will be around 6 pm at Kate & Captain Gene’s house (2216 CR 201). Bring food to share & your own adult bever-age. Tea and water will be provided. There will be an informal discussion about our plans to fish on Saturday. We will discuss options for kayak fishing and wade fishing, possible ferrying of people out to fishing spots, and surf conditions. Saturday October 6: Fishing morning into afternoon with the following options. Pier fishing Kayak fishing at Dead Caney lake Possible Ferrying out to Kayak or wade fish We hope to offer hot spots up the creek this year too, if productive Surf fishing possible depending on conditions. Peggy Carl will be available at a designated time on Saturday at Kate’s House to work with those who need any help with casting. The Fish Fry will be middle to late afternoon. There will be a collection of $25 per person for those participating to cover event expenses and fish fry. Specific time and place to be given later. Fishing off the piers in the evening will be available. Bring bug repellant. Sunday October 7: Take the day to stick around and apply what you’ve learned, and let us know if you’re spending Sunday night too so we can meet up for dinner at one of the local restaurants: “Crab Trap” and “Hookers” are both great.

SARGENT OUTING — (continued)

More information on the fishing opportunities:

Night fishing from the piers: This often is the most productive fishing and always fun. For over 50 years Sargent has been known for fishing Caney Creek and there are many homes on the creek built for that specific purpose. Pier fishing accommodates all people especially if you are not so inclined to jump in a kayak or wade fish. All piers managed by Caney Y Realty have fishing lights, cleaning table, live wells, and fresh water hoses available. We have 4 houses on the creek all close to where our TWFF stuff is happening including, “Pelican Point”, “Bay House”, “Yellow House” & “Fishin’ House”. Do not forget your mosquito spray!! Kayak Fishing in the Cut and in the Bay: If you prefer to remain independent, you can launch your kayak from your house and start fishing immediately. Paddle & fish your way out into the cut and into the Bay. Our plan is to organize kayak ferrying to get kayak fly fishers & waders into lucrative shallow water areas on the south shoreline of the bay to targeting Redfish, Speckled Trout, & Flounder. Captain Gene can carry a few at a time and we are looking for volunteer boats to do the same. Let us know if you have a bay boat or know someone who does that is interested in helping! CALL “FISH TALE INN” & TALK TO RODNEY TO RENT YOUR KAYAKS (979)-244-1300 OR (979)-318-6691. Also, are trying a new Guide Service specializing in Kayak Fishing - Jared Esley, Tails and Scales Kayak Fishing. Wading: Wade fishing can also be productive. Again we’re targeting Redfish, Speckled Trout, & Flounder. You’ll need good wide saltwater wading boots to maneuver across soft muddy areas when necessary where the fish may be hitting, or crossing little inlets along the shoreline. You also could be negotiating an oyster bar or two. The main thing for boots is to have a tough bottom, no open toes or water shoes that will pull off in the mud. Always be mindful of Sting Rays and practice the stingray shuffle and/or wear stingray chaps. Long pants are the name of the game to protect from any potential jellyfish stings. A wading staff can be helpful. Surf Fishing: Fishing Sargent Beach surf is an option that as always, depends on the condition of the water. Fall is usually the best time to fish it. I’ve had success and lots of fun catching Speckled Trout and Lady Fish in the surf with my fly rod. We recommend “Coastal Escape” on the island for fly fishing beach lovers. It provides the opportunity to also fish the ICW side. Coastal Escape has underwater Fishing Lights for night fishing.

SARGENT OUTING — (continued)

Techniques to prepare for: Casting - Remember we’re on the coast so you’ll want to be able to cast in the wind, and you’ll want to be able to cast some distance; 50–75 ft will improve your chances of catching. For me, that means I have to double haul. It also helps to have your back cast be as good as your forward cast. Often the position you’re in on the pier, wading or kayaking, may require you to back cast to where the fish are. Ask Peggy for some casting tips if you need help while here. Sargent waters, including Caney Creek, East Matagorda Bay, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf surf, tend to be “off color”. Often in the Fall they are not quite so off color depending on the wind patterns and the amount of rain we have. However, blind casting is more typical than not. You’ll certainly see evidence of fish by way of birds working, water disturbances and bait working, but a clear view of the fish before you hook it, is truly a special and memorable experience! Caney Y Realty & Living Waters Guide Service, (Gene & Kate): Gene and I have lived and fished in Sargent for 25 years, and now we make our living here. Captain Gene has “Living Waters Guide Service.” Captain Gene has been guiding conventional inshore salt-water fishing trips in East Matagorda Bay full time since 2006. I have owned & managed Caney Y Vacation Rentals in Sargent since 2001 and have been selling real estate since 2009. In 2012, I be-came “Caney Y Realty.” Once again we look forward to sharing a Sargent experience with TWFF this year!

Junction Outing Recap by Diane Flowers

We had a wonderful group join us in Junction for the Llano TWFF outing. The highlight of the weekend was the opportunity to introduce more ladies to the advantage of fly fishing from a kayak. After I shared safety practices and equipment, Elaine and Tom taught us how to access the kayaks and how to maneuver in shallow water. Then the gals kayaked in a protected area to gain a comfort level. Our 2018 Kayak graduates are Marilyn Young, LaJan Bar-nes, Sheryl Latham, Carol Olewin, and Karen Fabac. Friday night's Mullet Mixer was followed by the video “Stepping into the Stream,” which chronicled some of the women who started Women's Fly Fishing organizations around the country.

Saturday morning gave our new kayakers an op-portunity to fish along the banks which could only be accessed by kayaking. City Sweets catered our lunch of sandwiches and wraps with chips. Our meeting room was lively with news shared, and wading loca-tions visited. Don was a valuable resource for good wading locations, and Dana Williams used her copy of “Fly Fishing the Texas Hill Country” by Kevin Hutchison, previously written by B.L.Priddy, to find wading areas.

After lunch, we decided to offer an opportunity for fishing from Flatrock down to our takeout point at South Llano RV Park and Resort. As a result, some of the gals gained some expertise getting through some small riffles, which everyone navigated beautifully! Thanks to Beverly Gordon, Julie Sieh, and Britta Hebert for joining us for the buddy fishing Saturday! Almost everyone caught some-thing, and had a chance to stretch their legs and bank fish along the way. Karen Fabac had never fly-fished or kayaked before, and thanks to Don's expert lesson, and Elaine's coaching, she developed a beautiful cast!

Junction welcomed us with signs around town, and, thanks go to Connie at the Kimble County Chamber of Com-merce for the goody bags. Ellen at S. Llano RV Park allowed us the use of the meeting room all day Friday and Saturday, for anyone to come in and visit and tie flies.

Although we had storms Thursday night/Friday morning, and the water was somewhat murky, the weekend ended up beautiful, and we had a great time. Special thanks to Don and Elaine Graves for sharing their knowledge and expertise, and to my husband, Tom, for the out-ing idea and his support. Maybe next year, we can do it again!

We will email a list of new members each month and will provide new member in-formation in the newsletters. Our membership application asks the reason for joining TWFF. Many women have a very unique reason why they decide to join. I thought it would be good to share this with the club so that we can help each other reach our personal goals for being a TWFF member. These are the folks that have joined TWFF since last October 2017 and the reason they joined. Other Fishing Adventures Over the Summer

Unofficial TWFF Outing to Taos Area (continued from page 1)

The Conejos and Rio de Los Pinos were both fishable with the best areas being on the Conejos.

We stayed at the Conejos Anglers cabins in Colorado, which is about 1½ hr from Taos. The cab-ins were fine and the fly shop was maybe 25 yards walking distance to get flies or supplies in the morning, which was great! The only down side is there is no A/C and we had to bring fans. We spent most of our time on the Conejos up around Platoro.

We caught a lot of fish and before it was all over we ended up with a broken Tenkara Rod from a decent size rainbow and a flat tire from the gravel roads getting to the fishing locations. Be prepared when fishing this area because there is no cell service if you need help, you will have to flag some-one down!

By the end of the trip, the Carson National Forest was still closed because of the fires so we just

headed back home.

Colorado Fishing Adventure—by Cathy Case

The South Fork July 2018 trip was a beautiful trip despite the fires and low water conditions of the Rio Grande River. Members of TWFF, DFF, FWFF, Friends and families helped with directions and tips to make it a wonderful trip for all. The weather dictated our day, and getting out early and/or fishing in the evening for the bug hatch was great. This was my first trip to this area of Colorado and I brought my Water Master float boat to float the Rio Grande, but changed plans and spent time on three lakes: Beaver Creek Reser-voir, Big Meadows Reservoir, and Shaw Lake. All are located south of South Fork on hwy 160 to various county roads. The dirt roads were easy to drive in my car, and had boat launch for easy ac-cess. With bright sunny days and warming water I found the sinking Fly line on the reservoirs worked best. With floating line a nice floating bug, hopper or a black cricket fly and a dropper fly weighted; size 18 - 20 midge or nymphs worked for me. I caught about 20 fish all on the bottom flies with dropper set up. The Red and Black Delektable bug on floating line worked nicely at Big Meadow Lake up along the rocks. The Thunderstorms rolled in everyday about 11am and while at Shaw Lake I did get caught up in one. Stayed in the woods until it passed and continued fishing with sink line and wet flies while float-ing and rowing across Shaw Lake in the rain. I was a bit wet from the rain and stayed in car for about an hour to dry off and warm up; this is when I met fellow TWFF member Julie Wooten and her husband. We waited and the wind and rain stopped with clear skies and a flat calm lake to provide us with some great fishing. My second day there Jim Runnels and I fished Beaver Creek, right at the Beaver creek campground. He hiked up stream with me and showed me some holes for Brook Trout. After a short hike, Jim caught 9 and I caught 5. Loved these little fish n feisty fight. Wish at times I had a Tenkara rod. With temperature rising to 85 and at 8500 ft I hiked up to the road and back to camp and figured out I had only gone about 150 yards in 3 hours. (cont’d pg. 11)

Other Fishing Adventures Over the Summer (cont’d)

McKinney Falls State Park by Dana Williams

Linda Leal, Carol Olewin, and Dana Williams organized a fun but wet unofficial outing on Sunday, May 20

th at McKinney Falls State

Park. McKinney Falls State Park is located on the southeast side of Austin about 15 minutes from downtown and holds Onion Creek fea-turing two beautiful waterfalls/deep pools areas called the Upper Falls and Lower Falls. Nine ladies participated, and everyone caught fish including two ladies their first fish ever on the fly (Karen and Sally) and one guest of a member catching her first fish in Texas since moving here recently from Montana (Tori). Participants were: Linda, Carol, Dana, Juanita Escamilla, mother/daughter new members Jennifer and Chelsea Long, new member Karen Fabac, guest Tori W., and guest Sally.

As Onion Creek is quite narrow, we divided into 4 groups of 2-3 la-dies so that each group started out in a different area of the state park to ease crowding. Then as time elapsed and we rotated to other areas naturally, we were not fishing on top of each other. We found that sun-fish and bluegill were hammering on the purple/pink bully bluegill and olive/red wooly bugger (Scott’s Damsel bugger). Anglers also had success on the Brushy Creek streamer and the Llano Bug in yellow or black. We did not kayak but saw what appeared to be some kayakable areas as well as a dining/event hall on the state park grounds that could make McKinney Falls a good place for a future official TWFF outing. Onion Creek inside the state park is very scenic, but there are swimmers daily in the two Falls areas. Downstream of both the Lower and Upper Falls offers very good wade fishing. A complete fishing report with specific fishing locations is available from Dana Williams at [email protected].

The group fished about half a day and got completely soaked from pouring rain late in the morn-ing. The rain greatly reduced visibility in the water and made wading difficult so the morning was quite an adventure. We wrapped up around 1 pm and then met, after changing into dry clothes, at Waterloo Ice House restaurant in South Austin for a nice lunch and sharing of fish stories together. The consensus was that McKinney Falls was not the very best fish-ing in the Austin area but it is definitely a solid option. A good time was had by all.

where I truly feel at home. I have only been with

TWFF since 2018 but I aspire to be a part of this
