Dear Parishioners,
Thank you and many blessings in the new year - I would like to thank my Augustinian brothers and the parish community at St. Augustine for your welcome, hospitality and opportunity to minister with you during these summer months and to join with you at liturgy and at the St. Augustine Festival last weekend. It was a good experience for me as I transitioned from ministry at St. Mary of the Assumption [in Lawrence] to my sabbatical experience which begins this week at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
September for me, always marks the beginning of a new pastoral year as parish programs resume and school opens. Blessing to all of you as you begin this new pastoral year - you will be in my prayers.
Fr. John Dello Russo, OSA
Sunday Gospel Reflection - Luke The goodness of God is seen in the extravagant generosity with which God gives gifts. This is described in the psalm in the boundlessness and universal scope of God’s generosity. Like the rain that falls on the entire landscape, the blessings of God are showered on all. These blessings are true gifts. They have not been earned, nor can they be repaid. God’s openness is also seen in the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews and in the gospel. All are invited to approach the heavenly city; the heavenly banquet will be open to the poor and to those who have no way of repaying. Only the humble can receive the gifts of God. Only those who can admit their neediness are open enough to realize that God’s blessings are gifts freely given, not compensation for a job well done. Without a humble spirit we are unable to receive gifts as gifts. This is either because we are too proud or we do not know how to receive with the open hearts of children, who never think that they must return in kind. This is the kind of humility recommended by Sirach. This is the kind of humility possessed by the disadvantaged pictured in the gospel. As we have received from the bounty of God, so we are called to give to others. Only those who have received with a humble spirit can give with the generosity of God, for they know that they do not deserve God’s goodness and they do not require anything in return.

St. Augustine Festival Celebration 2019
We would like to thank everyone who helped in so many ways to make this annual event such a success! To all who made the 4:00 p.m. Mass such a memorable experience including the use of our new projector and screens for a presentation on the life of St. Augustine & this parish. To West Parish Cemetery for allowing us to cut their beautiful hydrangeas early so we could decorate the altar.
Many thanks to all those who donated raffle prizes, food, time, energy, trivial pursuit questions (and answers!!), musical talents, assistance in setting up and cleaning up, to the Knights of Columbus for their culinary skills and to all those who came to support & show thanks to the parish at this celebration.

Featured Ministry Scripture Study
St. Augustine Parish is blessed to have more than 25 ministries serving our local and extended communities. Each week, a different ministry is featured here. For a complete list and information about each ministry, visit www.staugustineparish.org and contact the listed coordinator. Want to learn more about what the bible teaches and what it means to us today? Our regular and special sessions are a wonderful way to make friends while growing in knowledge as we discover together how Sacred Scripture helps each of us with the joys, struggles, and questions of everyday life. Throughout the year both short-term (3 to 6 weeks) and in-depth (10+ weeks) studies are offered providing opportunities for people to participate as their schedules allow. Each session includes group prayer, open and lively discussions, and a short video segment. For more information on upcoming studies, visit staugustineparish.org/Scripture-Study.

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities.
Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.
The strength and vibrancy of our communities depend largely on the welfare of our priests who tirelessly serve others from all walks of life.
Powerful examples of strength in community are visible across 144 cities and towns of the Archdiocese of Boston. The roots of these communities can be traced back to the work of our priests.
Pine Street Inn: A Boston priest was one of the original founders of Pine Street Inn, which provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.
Cor Unum: Started by a Lawrence pastor, Cor Unum (“One Heart”) food pantry serves more than 250,000 meals annually to poverty-stricken families in Lawrence.
Addiction Support for Families: A Boston priest’s expertise in addiction and recovery has been instrumental for organizations helping families and individuals in the grips of addiction.
Rostro de Cristo: Efforts to help the poor on the margins of Ecuador’s largest city is hard work, except for those who have been inspired by a Boston priest who started Rostro de Cristo, an organization based in Boston that lives the Gospel and serves the poor.
It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities. Please support clergytrust.org
