En aquel tiempo, se acerca-ron a Jesús los fariseos y algunos escribas venidos de Jerusalén. Viendo que algu-nos de los discípulos de Je-sús comían con las manos impuras, es decir, sin habér-

selas lavado, los fariseos y los escribas le pregunta-ron: "¿Por qué tus discípulos comen con manos impu-ras y no siguen la tradición de nuestros mayo-res?" (Los fariseos y los judíos, en general, no comen sin lavarse antes las manos hasta el codo, siguiendo la tradición de sus mayores; al volver del mercado, no comen sin hacer primero las abluciones, y observan muchas otras cosas por tradición, como purificar los vasos, las jarras y las ollas). Jesús les contestó: "¡Qué bien profetizó Isaías sobre ustedes, hipócritas, cuando escribió: Este pue-blo me honra con los labios, pero su corazón está le-jos de mí. Es inútil el culto que me rinden, porque en-señan doctrinas que no son sino preceptos humanos! Ustedes dejan a un lado el mandamiento de Dios, para aferrarse a las tradiciones de los hombres". Después, Jesús llamó a la gente y les dijo: "Escúchenme todos y entiéndanme. Nada que entre de fuera puede manchar al hombre; lo que sí lo mancha es lo que sale de dentro; porque del corazón del hom-bre salen las intenciones malas, las fornicaciones, los robos, los homicidios, los adulterios, las codicias, las injusticias, los fraudes, el desenfreno, las envidias, la difamación, el orgullo y la frivolidad. Todas estas maldades salen de dentro y manchan al hombre".

La celebración de la fiesta de la Natividad de la Santí-sima Virgen María, es cono-cida en Oriente desde el si-glo VI. Fue fijada el 8 de septiembre, día con el que se abre el año litúrgico bi-zantino, el cual se cierra con la Dormición, en agosto. En Occidente fue introducida hacia el siglo VII y era cele-brada con una procesión-

letanía, que terminaba en la Basílica de Santa María la Mayor. El Evangelio no nos da datos del nacimiento de María, pero hay varias tradiciones. Algunas, conside-rando a María descendiente de David, señalan su naci-miento en Belén. Otra corriente griega y armenia, seña-la Nazareth como cuna de María. Sin embargo, ya en el siglo V existía en Jerusa-lén el santuario mariano situado junto a los restos de la piscina Probática, o sea, de las ovejas. Debajo de la hermosa iglesia románica, levantada por los cruzados, que aún existe -la Basílica de Santa Ana- se hallan los restos de una basílica bizantina y unas criptas excava-das en la roca que parecen haber formado parte de una vivienda que se ha considerado como la casa natal de la Virgen. Si pensamos por cuántas cosas podemos hoy alegrarnos, cuántas cosas podemos festejar y por cuán-tas cosas podemos alabar a Dios; todos los signos, por muchos y hermosos que sean, nos parecerán tan sólo un pálido reflejo de las maravillas que el Espíritu de Dios hizo en la Virgen María, y las que hace en nosotros, las que puede seguir haciendo... si lo dejamos.

Narodzenie Najświętszej Maryi Panny

8 września Pismo Święte nigdzie nie wspomina o narodzinach Maryi. Tradycja jednak prze-kazuje, że Jej rodzicami byli św. Anna i św. Joachim. Byli oni pobożnymi Żydami. Mi-mo sędziwego wieku nie mieli dziecka. W tamtych czasach uważane to było za karę za grzechy przodków. Dlatego Anna i Joachim gorliwie prosili Boga o dziecko. Bóg wysłuchał ich próśb i w nagrodę za pokładaną w Nim bezgranicz-ną ufność sprawił, że Anna urodziła córkę, Maryję. Anna nie wiedziała jeszcze wtedy, że Maryja zosta-ła niepokalanie poczęta i jest zachowana od wszel-kiego grzechu, by później, będąc posłuszną Bożej woli, stać się Matką Boga. Nie znamy miejsca urodzenia Maryi ani też daty jej przyjścia na ziemię. Jeśli jednak przyjmiemy za punkt wyjścia przyjęty pierwszy rok naszej ery jako datę narodzenia Chrystusa, to należy się zgodzić, że Maryja przyszła na świat pomiędzy 20 a 16 ro-kiem przed narodzeniem Pana Jezusa. Pierwsze wzmianki o liturgicznym obchodzie naro-dzin Maryi pochodzą z VI w. Święto powstało praw-dopodobnie w Syrii, gdy po Soborze Efeskim kult maryjny w Kościele przybrał zdecydowanie na sile. Wprowadzenie tego święta przypisuje się papieżo-wi św. Sergiuszowi I w 688 r. Na Wschodzie uro-

czystość ta musiała istnieć wcześniej, bo kazania-homilie wygłaszali o niej św. German (+ 732) i św. Jan Damasceński (+ 749). W Rzymie gromadzono się w dniu tego święta w kościele św. Adriana, któ-ry był przerobiony z dawnej sali senatu rzymskie-go, po czym w uroczystej procesji udawali się wszyscy z zapalonymi świecami do Bazyliki Matki Bożej Większej. Datę 8 września Kościół przyjął ze Wschodu - w tym dniu obchód ten znajdował się w sakramenta-rzach gelazjańskim i gregoriańskim. Święto rozsze-rzało się w Kościele dość wolno - wynikało to m.in. z tego, że wszelkie informacje o okolicznościach narodzenia Bożej Rodzicielki pochodziły z apokry-fów. W Polsce święto Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny ma także nazwę Matki Bożej Siewnej. Był bowiem dawny zwyczaj, że dopiero po tym święcie i uprzątnięciu pól, brano się do orki i siewu. Lud chciał najpierw, aby rzucone w ziemię ziarno po-błogosławiła Boża Rodzicielka. Do ziarna siewnego mieszano ziarno wyłuskane z kłosów, które były wraz z kwiatami i ziołami poświęcane w uroczy-stość Wniebowzięcia Matki Bożej, by uprosić sobie dobry urodzaj. Na Podhalu święto 8 września nazy-wano Zitosiewną, gdyż tam sieje się wtedy żyto. W święto Matki Bożej Siewnej urządzano także do-żynki. We Włoszech i niektórych krajach łacińskich istnie-je kult Maryi-Dziecięcia. We Włoszech istnieją na-wet sanktuaria - a więc miejsca, gdzie są czczone jako cudowne figurki i obrazy Maryi-Niemowlęcia w kołysce. Do nich należą między innymi: Madonna Bambina w Forno Canavese, Madonna Bambina w katedrze mediolańskiej - najwspanialszej świątyni wzniesionej pod wezwaniem Narodzenia Najświęt-szej Maryi Panny; Madonna Bambina w kaplicy domu generalnego Sióstr Miłosierdzia. Matka Boża-Dzieciątko jest główną Patronką tego zgromadze-nia. Czwarte sanktuarium Matki Bożej-Dzieciątka jest w Morcatelle - znajduje się tam obraz namalo-wany przez św. Weronikę Julianę (+ 1727). Dzisiejsze święto przypomina nam, że Maryja była zwykłym człowiekiem. Choć zachowana od zepsu-cia grzechu, przez całe życie posiadała wolną wo-lę, nie była do niczego zdeterminowana. Tak jak każdy z nas miała swoich rodziców, rosła, bawiła się, pomagała w prowadzeniu domu, miała swoich znajomych i krewnych. Dopiero Jej zaufanie, posłu-szeństwo i pełna zawierzenia odpowiedź na Boży głos sprawiły, że "będą Ją chwalić wszystkie poko-lenia".

Niedziela XXII tygodnia okresu zwykłego U Jezusa zebrali się faryzeusze i kilku uczonych w Piśmie, którzy przybyli z Jerozolimy. I zauważyli, że niektórzy z Jego uczniów brali posiłek nieczystymi, to znaczy nieobmytymi rękami. Faryzeusze bo-wiem, i w ogóle Żydzi, trzymając się tradycji starszych, nie jedzą, jeśli sobie rąk nie obmyją, rozluźniając pięść. I gdy wrócą z rynku, nie je-dzą, dopóki się nie obmyją. Jest jeszcze wiele innych zwyczajów, któ-re przejęli i których przestrzegają, jak obmywanie kubków, dzbanków, naczyń miedzianych. Zapytali Go więc faryzeusze i uczeni w Piśmie: "Dlaczego Twoi uczniowie nie postępują według tradycji starszych, lecz jedzą nieczystymi rękami?" Odpowiedział im: "Słusznie prorok Izajasz powiedział o was, obłudnikach, jak jest napisane: „Ten lud czci Mnie wargami, lecz sercem swym daleko jest ode Mnie. Ale czci Mnie na próżno, ucząc zasad podanych przez ludzi”. Uchyliliście przykaza-nie Boże, a trzymacie się ludzkiej tradycji". Potem przywołał znowu tłum do siebie i rzekł do niego: "Słuchajcie Mnie, wszyscy, i zrozumcie! Nic nie wchodzi z zewnątrz w człowieka, co mogłoby uczynić go nie-czystym; lecz to, co wychodzi z człowieka, to czyni człowieka nieczy-stym. Z wnętrza bowiem, z serca ludzkiego pochodzą złe myśli, nie-rząd, kradzieże, zabójstwa, cudzołóstwa, chciwość, przewrotność, podstęp, wyuzdanie, zazdrość, obelgi, pycha, głupota. Całe to zło z wnętrza pochodzi i czyni człowieka nieczystym".

This Sunday, our lectionary returns to Mark’s Gos-pel after a number of Sundays in which we heard the Bread of Life discourse from the Gospel of John. Recall that we focus on the Gospel of Mark in Lectionary Cycle B, but sub-stitute John’s report of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes for Mark’s report of this event. In today’s Gospel, Mark provides a significant amount of information about the Jewish observance of ritual-purity laws. Most scholars believe that Mark includes this information because his audience includes Gentile Christians who have no knowledge or experience of these laws. We can infer, therefore, that many in Mark’s community were not Jewish Christians. In this Gospel, Mark addresses the question of which Jewish practices would also be observed in the newly emerging Christian community. This was a significant ques-tion for the early Christian Church, especially in communities that included both Jewish and Gentile converts to Christiani-ty. We also hear this question addressed in the letters of Paul with regard to table fellowship. In Gospel passages such as the one today, we see the Gospel evangelists find-ing justification for a Christian practice distinct from Judaism in the remembrances of Jesus’ teaching and the practice of his first disciples. Jesus first criticizes the Pharisees for putting human tradition above God’s Law. Here, Jesus is referring to the tradition of the elders, the teachings of the Pharisees, which extended the ritual-purity laws of Temple worship to every-day Jewish life. Jesus criticizes the Pharisees for making this tradition equal to and as binding as the Law of Moses. Next, Jesus comments on the meaning behind the Pharisees’ language of holiness—clean and unclean. Jesus teaches that a person is not defiled by the food that enters his or her body, but rather by sin that emerges from his or her words and actions. In this teaching, Jesus unmasks a deeper question behind the one posed to him by the Phari-sees. The real issue is holiness, which is not found in exter-nal acts alone. Holiness comes from within and is evidenced in the actions and attitudes that emerge from a person’s life. If we read today’s Gospel carefully, we will see a pattern in Jesus’ teaching method that will be repeated in the

weeks ahead. Jesus’ first teaching is directed to the Phari-sees who questioned him. Jesus’ words are then directed to the crowd, teaching that a person is defiled by his or her words and actions, not by the food that he or she eats. In verses omitted in today’s reading, we learn that Jesus re-turned home with his disciples, who in turn questioned him about what he had taught. The words we read at the conclu-sion of today’s Gospel are addressed to Jesus’ disciples. Mark’s narrative shows several audiences for Jesus’ teach-ing: his antagonists, the crowds, and Jesus’ disciples. As we see in this reading, the words to the Pharisees are often words of challenge. The teaching to the crowds is often a general, sometimes cryptic, message. With the disciples, who often misunderstand Jesus’ words, further explanation is offered about his message and its meaning. Jesus’ words challenge us as well. In our desire to show that we are holy, we might also give too much cre-dence to externals, following rules without thinking about the intention behind them. Jesus reminds us that we do not make ourselves holy by our actions. Rather, we become holy when we allow God’s Spirit to transform us. Our actions should be an expression of the conversion of our heart to God and to God’s ways.
