Dear Fellow Pilgrims,
When we started StreetLights
Outreach in 2004, we did so
as an answer to this question:
How did Jesus do church? It
turns out there is no scriptural
evidence that Jesus put on a
coat and tie, grabbed his rosary, and sat in the same
pew for an hour every Sunday morning. It’s
comforting to think doing so makes us Christ-like,
but that’s not really how Christ “did church.” Even
as we prayerfully replicate his Last Supper, what we
do isn’t how it actually went down. For starters, the
gospel says the disciples reclined at table. They
reclined! They were relaxed, enjoying each other’s
company, probably cracking a few jokes. When I was
a kid, if I slouched in the pew or started laughing
with my brother, yikes! And, ready for this? Jesus
took the bread and broke it WHILE THEY WERE
AT TABLE! In other words, they were all eating
within an hour before receiving Holy Communion!
When I pointed that out to Sister Mary Alice in the
third grade, I was told to go sit in the hall.
The example he set is clear. Jesus “did church” on
street corners, beaches, and anywhere else people
gathered. He did not sit in and wait for people to
come to him; he went out into the world where they
were. This advances the whole idea of incarnation
when you think about it: God did not wait for hu-
manity to find its way back to unity with God; in-
stead, God came to life among us – and still does –
where we are, as we are.
For Jesus, “church” was all about, maybe only about,
the love, the action, the mercy, and the encounter.
And that can happen anywhere and everywhere. It
was about feeding the hungry, accompanying the
lonely, welcoming the stranger, and comforting the
sick. Church isn’t about where you go, it’s about how
you love. Thus, he gave us his two greatest
commandments: love God with all your being, and
love your neighbor as yourself. That’s church!
These past several months have called us back to that
understanding. Church isn’t the noun, however
comforting it feels at times, it’s the verb. It’s the
loaves of compassion we break open and the grapes
of love we pour out. Church is the heart we carry
into the world. This idea is baked into our dismissal
rite: go forth in peace to glorify the Lord with our
lives.
At StreetLights Outreach, this pandemic has called us
to focus on action rather than place. Last autumn, we
purchased a House of Hospitality through our
umbrella organization, Whatsoever You Do, Inc. Our
vision pursued Dorothy Day’s model of Catholic
Worker Houses. We spent the winter renovating and
began hosting programs in early spring. What grand
plans we had! Then Covid hit. But here’s the thing:
you can’t shut down the movement of the Spirit. In
fact, one of our programs – Amani Outreach – which
meets the needs of seniors and disabled people, has
been challenged in new ways. We have also begun
offering more virtual engagements and conversations.

“Kids & Ice Cream Drive-Thru”
September 9 from 6 to 7pm
Sr. Marla misses seeing our young parishioners. She’ll be outside on Wednesday, September 9, from 6 to 7pm to distribute ice cream cups to the kids of our parish.
September 23 to November 1
More info coming soon regarding how you can help save lives by praying and joining the vigil for an end to abortion.
(continued from previous page)
So even though we haven’t been able to welcome a
lot of people into our House of Hospitality yet, we’re
still reaching people on the margins and bringing
them the welcoming joy of Christ’s presence.
That’s what I hope for all of us as we move forward.
Whether you’ve been able to join us for Mass
physically or virtually, we’re all still “church.” We are
all still the people of God moved by the Spirit and
called to carry Christ’s love into the world. Nothing
can stop that.
Journey well and pray always.
Peace, Deacon Steve Meyer

Our Church Cleaners have been on hiatus because of
the pandemic. We appreciate all their past efforts in keep-
ing our church clean and all they’ll do in the future when
we’re back to normal. Linda Barrette, John Gillis, and Sr.
Marla have been doing all the cleaning and disinfecting as
recommended. This work often goes unnoticed because
it happens behind the scenes. We’re grateful for your
dedication and service to our parish family!
