My dear Parishioners,

The Feast Day of our Patron, St. Paul of the Cross, occurred

this past Friday but we are celebrating it as a parish this

Sunday which happens to be World Mission Sunday. What

a blessed coincidence! The very word “Mission” should

remind us Catholics that, through our baptism, we became

missionaries— called by Jesus Christ to share intimately in

his life and sent forth by him to announce to our world the

love that God has for every person.

Though he never left Italy, Paul of the Cross was an unbe-

lievable missionary. He didn’t simply preach the love of

God as it was manifested in Christ Crucified, he lived it.

That is why he was so effective in converting and drawing

others back to the faith. He learned how to pray and spent

hours in deep contemplation of the sufferings of Christ. His

ardor drove him to gather others into a group that would be

known as the “Passionists” to share in his life and mission.

And while he dreamed to going to other lands, particularly

England, he remained steadfast in his preaching to the peo-

ple of his own area, especially the forgotten poor. Succeed-

ing generations of Passionists would move out across the

world to Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East, and

Africa. Blessed Dominic Barberi with several others would

go first to Belgium and then to England, fulfilling Paul’s

dream, and in 1845 he would received John Henry (later,

Cardinal) Newman into the Catholic Church.

Today, we are still a missionary Church. Here in Atlanta,

St. Paul of the Cross Parish is a missionary community.

Inspired by our holy Patron and guided by the same Spirit

who energized him, may we bring the message of the Cross

to our friends, our neighborhoods, our schools and our

workplaces. —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

(Regla pasionista original). - Padre Patricio, C.P.
