T oday we celebrate the Twenty -Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Gospel the people begin to question who Jesus might be. Some believe he is John the Baptist, others Elijah or one of the prophets. So Jesus poses the question to Peter, “who do you say that I am?” Peter responds correctly and says he is the Messiah, but Peter and Jesus have different ideas about what the Messiah will be. For Peter the Messiah will come in glory and rule over the people as a king. For Jesus the Messiah will be the suffe- ring servant who serves the rest. Peter doesn’t like the answer. Today we still struggle with that answer. All of us are called to serve our neighbor. We are to sacrifice for those we know and those we don’t know just because it is the right thing to do. Our sacrifice will be a continuation of the sacrifice of Jesus and continue the work of his kingdom. This weekend we celebrate the St. Kieran parish picnic. We couldn’t ask for better weather. The picnic begins after the 10:00 AM mass today. Every time I look at the menu that Bill Barker is organizing I start drooling. And after that you can settle that food with a Zarlengos Italian Ice. In between there will be music provided by Mid Life Crisis and there will also be a petting zoo for the young and young at heart along with the train as young and young at heart along with the train as well. You also are encouraged to bring your own snacks if you want. The picnic is really just a nice day to catch up with friends and enjoy some great company. See you all this afternoon. The picnic ends at 3:00 PM. Thanks everyone who helped to make the picnic happen especially Sheila Porrata and Bill Barker. This weekend we celebrate Catechetical Sunday in both St. Kieran and St. Agnes. It is a time for us to thank our catechists, teachers, and volun- teers in our religious education program, the RCIA and the school. It is also a time to pray for the success of our religious education program and the school and the RCIA. At each of the masses this weekend we will be asking our catechists and teachers to stand so we can recognize them and bless them. Thanks to everyone who gives their time to pass on our faith to the next generation. This year our pet blessing will be taking place on October 6th at 10:00 AM These blessings are in honor of St. Francis of Assisi whose feast day is on October 4th. Francis had a tremendous love for all of God’s creation including but not limited to animals. He also was a great restorer in the church. We look forward to expelling any demons present in your pets. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This weekend we come together to celebrate the seminarians of the Archdiocese of Chicago through our annual second collec on. The men we acknowledge today are the future leaders of our Church. Your past support of this collec on has made a significant impact on each seminarian and I ask you to join me again this year in contribu ng to the Seminarian Educa on Second Collec on.

The cri cal educa on and training needed to successfully shepherd parishes, administer the sacraments, and strengthen our Church is made possible by both your prayers and financial support. There are currently 64 seminarians preparing for a life of service as archdiocesan priests, and their enthusiasm to evangelize our faith is inspiring.

Your contribu ons to this collec on alleviate monthly expenses such as tui on and fees, room and board, and health insurance for each seminarian and will be used solely for the forma on of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Remi ance envelopes have been provided to your parish, or you are welcome to contribute online at www.archchicago.org/seminarianfund.

On behalf of current and future archdiocesan seminarians, thank you. May God con nue to bless you abundantly. Please know that I keep you in my daily prayers and inten ons, and I ask for yours in return.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Archbishop of Chicago

HELP THE DEACONS OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO The Deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago will gather on Sunday, October 7, for their Annual St. Francis Day Dinner. Funds raised at the event, through a few different raffles, help the deacons of the Archdiocese to help others and deacons (and their families) in need. You can help our hard-working deacons by purchasing St. Francis Day Raffle Tickets. The Knights of Columbus Chicago Heights Council #997 have graciously offered to sell tickets to our parishio-ners after all of the weekend Masses September 15/16 and September 22/23. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 each or a book of 6 for $25. Winnings are as follows:

First Place Prize Winner (1,) $1000 Second Place Prize Winner (1,) $500

Third Place Prize Winner (2,) $100 each Fourth Place Prize Winner (6,) $50 each

Thank you for your support of the Deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago! All of us in the Diaco-nate are truly blessed by the parishioners of our home parishes and by the ministry that the Lord has called us to administer. God Bless all of you!

The St. Kieran Women’s Club invites you to join us for a

Morning of Reflection at the Carmelite Monastery & Grotto, 1628 Ridge Road, Munster, Indiana,

on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. We will meet in the picnic area for coffee and muffins. A tour of the buildings and grounds will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will last about an hour an a half — so wear your walking shoes! There will be time for prayer and reflection in the grotto afterwards. Reservations are not required — just meet us at 9:30 that morning. If you are in need of a ride to the Monastery, call Teri Klopp at 708/912-3773, or e-mail: [email protected]. There are several board members willing to offer rides. We look forward to sharing this time with you in prayer and reflection.

THANK YOU!! Dear St. Kieran Parishioners, I want to take a moment to thank you for the donations to the students of Chicago Heights School District 170. The supplies are greatly needed, and sincerely appreciated; as the depth of the poverty is evident by a quick observation of the students this first week of school. Supplies are the last thing on these fami-lies’ minds as the struggle to clothe or feed their children. Having the necessary supplies to begin their first weeks of school is helping them to succeed in school. And your generosity is inspiring. Thank you! Sincerely, Kris Linde and the students of Jefferson School

St. Agnes has hosted a Shawl Ministry group for a number of years. They are a small group of knitters and crocheters who make baby afghans for fami-lies who are baptizing, shawls for the sick or home-bound and neck scarves for PADS guests. A lot of the work may be done at home, but they meet once a month for about an hour at St. Agnes, usually on the last Thursday of the month at 10 AM for a cup of coffee, company, and to pray while they work. If you’re interested in joining the group, please call Ann at 756-2635 or Kay in the parish office at St. Agnes at 709-2694.

P.S. Plenty of supplies are available, so please think about coming to learn how to knit or just for the fellowship!
