Reflection

Certain questions change lives, depending on our answer. "Do you take this person to be your husband/wife?" "Do you want this job?" "Can you forgive me?" The question Jesus asks today is one that certainly changes lives. Our response is not simply an academic exercise, a matter of knowing the right answer we learned from a book. Our an-swer must lead to a commitment that is to be lived out each day of our lives. Peter's answer certainly changed the course of his life. Jesus recognized that it was not Peter's innate knowledge, or that of any other person, that had given Peter his response: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." It was the Father. And so Jesus declares that Peter will be the one to lead the other disciples and all who would come after. Simon, son of John, fisherman, husband, brother--and one who would deny he ever knew Christ!--he was to be the rock on which Jesus would build the church. His response was life-changing.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (often abbreviat-ed RCIA) is the process through which interested adults are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic faith and way of life. Do you or know someone who longs to have a closer relationship with our Heavenly Father? Did you know that many who have considered becoming Catholic say that no one ever asked them to become a member of our church. Ask about the RCIA sessions for those who are not baptized, are of other faiths, or are curious about ex-ploring the Catholic faith. Call the Parish office at 650-588-1455 for more detailed information.

From the Pastor's Desk

The New School Year

Dear Parishioners,

Welcome back, Children!: The School Year begins Wednesday August 24th. The sleepy St. Veronica premises will burst into life and laugh-ter again. When summer comes, with the school out of session, we miss the children. We also miss them during the weekday Masses and for altar serving. I hope the summer vacation has been a time of rest and relaxation for the students as well for the faculty and staff. The new school year is another period of time, a precious gift from God, for the whole school to learn and grow, to imbibe good values and vision, to ac-quire more information, but also to seek transfor-mation of self.

Learning Things: Our students will learn the languages, important tools to communicate and share thoughts and feelings. They will learn Math and Science, verifiable sources of knowledge, as a way of accessing the world and finding ways of improving life for everyone. They will also come to grips with history and geography as ways of knowing the past and the physical features of the earth, the earth we love so much and want to pro-tect. They will, of course, learn Catholic Religion and come to know that Christ is at the heart of everything and everyone in the world, calling us to follow him and sending us out on his mission.

School, part of the Mission of the Parish: The Archbishop in a recent document called “Strategic Plan for our Catholic Schools” spells out the mission of the Pastor to work toward inte-grating the school into parish life because the school is a parish ministry. Everything that goes on in the school is part of what the parish as a

whole seeks and hopes for. As I will collaborate with the Principal, Vice Principal, faculty, staff, and parents of the school during this school year, it is our goal to let the Catholic vision shine in our school even more brightly. Through our tra-dition and practices, we will strive to share the beauty and meaning of what it means to be Cath-olic in the 21st century. Through our Mass, pray-er, and other religious practices, we hope to en-courage everyone in the school community to come in contact with the mystery of God re-vealed in Jesus Christ.

Parish Festival: September 23, 24, & 25th: In about a month’s time, the Parish Festival is going to happen. It’s an exciting time for the whole par-ish and school community. Last year, we saw many parishioners actively joining the school community even in the organization and running of the parish festival. The energetic and talented Lori Cadigan will continue to be the chair of this year’s festival. I seek active collaboration from everyone to make the Parish Festival a grand suc-cess. Besides the community building, let’s keep in mind that it is the biggest fundraiser for the parish and school. We need the money to keep the programs strong.

St. Veronica Parish is marching ahead toward peace and prosperity. We are walking with Christ himself who calls us to love and serve one anoth-er. We are being built into the Body of Christ. May the love and grace of Christ touch each one of us and fill us with the blessings our hearts are yearning for.

Your Friend and Pastor,

Father Charles Puthota

Catholic Charities CYO Seeks Apartment for Refugee Family - Can you help?

A Burmese farmer, his pregnant wife and three children ages 6, 5, and 11 months, fled persecution in Burma and arrived as refugees in the San Francisco Bay Area this summer. They are in immediate need of an apartment to avoid becoming home-less. Catholic Charities CYO is working to help this family find housing. We would welcome a 2-bedroom apartment, below market rate, as we work with this family to help them learn English, apply for jobs, and eventually become self-sufficient. Please contact Michelle Montoya at Catholic Charities CYO at 415-972-1246 or [email protected] if you can help this family find an affordable apartment. Thank you.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS AND PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR

Do you know any "foodies" -- folks who love food "for

consumption, study, preparation and news" ("Foodie," Wik-

ipedia). In a way, all of us are called to give special attention

to the simple food we bring to the Lord's altar table, for with

the bread and wine we bring our entire lives.

After the Liturgy of

the word, the Liturgy of

the Eucharist takes place

in the Mass. This part of

the liturgy begins with the

preparation of the altar.

This is a pivotal action.

The ambo was the point

of focus for the Liturgy

of the Word; the altar is

the point of focus for the

Liturgy of the Eucharist.

The Word of God pro-

claimed, taken in, and

"digested" leads us to the action of Eucharist where we actual-

ly eat and drink of the Word made Flesh.

The gifts of bread and wine are presented by those gath-

ered in the assembly. Unleavened bread -- wheat that was

planted, tended, harvested, crushed, and then made anew into

this simple food. Wine -- grapes that were planted, tended,

harvested, crushed, and then made anew into a rich drink.

These are the elements through which we offer ourselves to

God and Christ offers himself to us. Financial offerings for the

poor or for the needs of the Church also symbolize and make

real our participation in the Eucharist and in the mission of the

Church.

• What are the prayers, works, joys and sufferings of your

week that you bring to the Lord's altar table?

Family Connection Today's Gospel reminds us that the Church is built on the foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. Peter announces the core of our faith, that Jesus is God's only Son. The family, as the domestic church, has this same faith as its foundation. As you gather together as a family, talk about people whose faith has helped you to be a member of the Church and talk about what you have learned from leaders in our Church today. Read together today's Gospel, Matthew 16:13-20. Talk about what you know about Peter and his importance to the early Christian community. Talk about what we can learn from Peter and his profession of faith about Jesus.
