Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr

October 17

Memorial of Saint Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

October 15

Feast of Saint Luke, evangelist October 18

St. Ignatius is one of the great bishops of the early

Church. He was the successor of St. Peter as

Bishop of Antioch. He was condemned to death by wild beasts during the

Emperor Trajan's persecution. On his way to Rome, he wrote seven magnificent letters, which

we still have today, concerning the Per-son

of Christ, his love for Christ, his desire for martyrdom and on the constitution of

the Church and Christian life. His sentiments before his approaching martyrdom are summed in his word

in the Communion antiphon, "I am the wheat of Christ, ground by the teeth of beasts to become pure bread."

St. Teresa was born in Avila, Spain in 1515. At age 20, she entered the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation in Avila. Shortly after her profession, St. Teresa

became seriously ill, which required a lengthy recuperation. After an en-couraging visit by the Carmelite General at the time, John Baptist Rubeo, St. Teresa resolved to found new Carmelite convents committed to lives of poverty, seclusion and prayer. Also, she experienced many visions and mystical impressions and began to write spiritual books about them. Her important works include The Interior Castle, The Way of Perfection and her autobiography, The Life of Teresa of Jesus. St. Teresa was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970 by Pope Paul VI.

Luke wrote one of the major portions of the New Testament, a two-volume work comprising the third Gospel and Acts of the Apostles. In the two books he shows the

parallel between the life of Christ and that of the Church. He is the only Gentile Christian among the Gospel writers. Tradition holds him to be a native of Antioch, and Paul calls him “our beloved physician.” His Gospel was probably written between 70 and 85 A.D. Luke appears in Acts during Paul’s second journey, remains at Philippi for several years until Paul returns from his third journey, accompanies Paul to Jerusalem, and remains near him when he is imprisoned in Caesarea. During these two years, Luke had time to seek information and interview persons who had known Jesus. He accompanied Paul on the dangerous journey to Rome where he was a faithful companion. Luke’s unique character may best be seen by the emphases of his Gospel, which has been given a number of subtitles: 1) The Gospel of Mercy 2) The Gospel of Universal Salvation 3) The Gospel of the Poor 4) The Gospel of Absolute Renunciation 5) The Gospel of Prayer and the Holy Spirit 6) The Gospel of Joy

These 17th century French missionaries traveled to the northeast part of the New World to share the Gospel.

The Jesuit missionaries visited the Iroquois and Mohawk peoples living in the Huron area. St. John de Brebeuf evangelized amongst the peoples for three successful years before being captured by the Iroquois and tortured to death. St. Isaac Joques was captured; his hand mutilated, and he was killed by a tomahawk blow. These eight heroic martyrs are remembered as the North American Martyrs and they were canonized in 1930 by Pius XI.

COME AND SHARE IN OUR GIVING TREE! Each year since 1983, we as a parish community have helped bring the joy of Christmas to many

Who are in need in our community. We reach out to others in their homes, hospitals, prisons and

shelters throughout the city. In 1983 we started with a list of 30 people in need, and each year the numbers have grown. Last year over 400 of our brothers and sisters received food,

clothing, toys, bikes, used winter coats and furniture. Over 50 children were given a “goodie bag” filled

with little toys, candy, fruit and raisins. All of this was possible because of YOUR GENEROSITY,

CONCERN, AND LOVE and your willingness to share what God has given to you and your family. It’s time once again to think about how

we can make Christmas happier for others. Please sign up to help at our table in the Narthex (atrium) this weekend at all the Liturgies. There are so many ways that you

can help: sewing goodie bags, writing requests on the paper orna-ments, decorating the Giving Tree with all the ornaments, collecting large boxes for family’s gifts, helping to sort the gifts, stuffing goodie

bags, and helping to deliver the gifts. If you have any questions, please call

Wendy Murphy 916-8119.
