TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 13, 2013

TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 13, 2013 As Christ makes his way to the cross, he accedes to the pleas of ten lepers for pity. The consummation of the Samaritan leper’s healing happens when he falls at the feet of Jesus in thanksgiving. Which makes Jesus wonder, “Where are the other nine?” Saint Paul warns: “If we deny him, he will deny us.” The formerly skeptical Naaman returns to Elisha filled with gratitude and praise for God once his leprosy is healed by plunging in the Jordan. He resolves to live the rest of his life worshiping no other god but the Lord. For us, fervent thanksgiving prevents us from ever denying God; it keeps us strong in the faith that saves us. Presence of others. Like those poor in the psalms who call on the loving tenderness of the God of the covenant, the lepers cry out to the one in whom they discern a savior. In sending them first to those who are qualified to verify a cure, Jesus not only makes them a promise, he also puts their faith to the test. For at that moment, they are not yet cured. They are healed “on the way”, by obeying Jesus’ word. Then, filled with joy, but forgetful of the giver, they scatter. // There is one exception, a Samaritan, a foreigner! For him alone the journey of faith is not complete until he returns to the giver of the gift. Jesus continues the dialogue by sending him forth once more, this time as a disciple. ST. FAMILY PERSPECTIVE : Everyone needs “A Round Tuit.” The lepers in today’s gospel probably meant to thank Jesus. Excited about being cured they didn’t get ‘around-to-it.’ We get caught up in our own interests and fail to appreciate what we have or to say what is in our hearts. This week get yourself a “Round Tuit.” PRO-LIFE REFLECTION : Pre-born children are the most oppressed people in the world today. In America approximately 3500 of them are killed every day by surgical abortion. That’s 1,300,000 every year. Worldwide 55,000,000 are killed every year and yet many of us so-called people of God remain silent. Join a pro-life group today. STEWARDSHIP : “Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Luke 17:18. Jesus seems so sad and disappointed in the nine lepers who did not return to thank Him. Do we regularly return to thank God? Or do we run off to our busy lives, taking for granted all the wonderful blessings that God gives to us every day?
