What does it mean to have a Mass "offered"  for  someone? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. We find not only the origins of this practice dating to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance.

Spend Time with Your Family, Not Money What our children want and need is our time, not another stuffed animal mouse.We as parents crave a relationship with our children that will be nurtured into their adult years. I've been slightly stumped this week on article topics, so in a moment of enlightenment I turned to a very erudite gentleman and asked for his suggestion on a "family finance" topic. His prompt response:  Spend Time with Your Family, Not Money  Brilliant! If you stop to think about it, much of the money we spend as families does indeed go to entertainment type expenses. In search of entertainment, we eschew family board games in favor of ten dollars tickets to the multiplex, where we purchase huge and overpriced tubs of food and drink that are bad for us. Looking for time together, we dine out at restaurants with long lines and super sized portions rather than throwing hot dogs on the grill and inviting the neighbors over for an evening. Hoping to create lifelong memories, we max out our credit cards to cart our children to overcrowded amusement parks and spend time and money purchasing stuff we hope will remind us of the trip rather than hiking at a local national park or swimming in a nearby lake.

 We do these things with the best of intentions ‐ we want to give our families the best. But we often do so at the expense of our peace of mind and despite the knowledge that we are doing harm to our family finances. What our children want and need is our time, not another stuffed animal mouse. What we as parents crave is a relationship with our children that will be nurtured into their adult years. Look at any close family and ask them the key to their happiness and it is doubtful that they will tell you, "We stayed in four star hotels every summer and ate out three nights a week."   It's not wrong for us to want to give our children the world. What is wrong is for us to forget that we are supposed to be the "grown ups" in the equation ‐ the ones who teach our kids that living within our means and not being overly reliant upon debt makes sense financially, emotionally and spiritually. So next time you are struggling with balancing the family budget, remember these words of wisdom:  Spend Time with Your Family, Not Money  by Lisa M. Hendey | Source: Catholic.net

CONGRATULATIONS TO ARCHBISHOP ZYGMUNT ZIMOWSKI ON THE OCCASION OF HIS  40TH ANNIVERSARY OF PRIESTHOOD 

With deep joy, we offer you our warm congratulations and good wishes on the happy event of the 40th anniversary of your ordination to the priesthood. When a priest celebrates his Ordination Anniversary,  it is actually not about him. It is about the priesthood which he is a model.  It’s about Christ whom he exemplifies. It’s about the wonderful work of a priest, and the way he touches the lives of so many.     Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, 

president of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers.  Born in Kupienin, Poland.  He received a Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology from the Catholic University of Lublin. He continued his studies and received his Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from the Faculty of Theology at the Leopold‐Franzens University of Innsbruck. He was Postulator of some processes of beatification and canonization and is the author of 120 publications, 40 pastoral letters and some books and several articles.  On 28 March 2002, Monsignor Zimowski was appointed Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Radom and was ordained in the Cathedral of Radom on 25 May 2002 by the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI.  He remained as Bishop of Radom until his appointment as the President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers in 2009. He was at the same time raised to the dignity of Archbishop ad personam. In addition to his native Polish, Archbishop Zimowski speaks Italian, German, English, French and Russian.  On 4 May 2011, Pope Benedict appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On  July 28, 2012, Archbishop Zimowski was named a Member of the Congregation for Bishops.  On this happy occasion, we pray that the Lord, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grant you many blessings and many more years in his service to God and God's people.  May you be richly blessed as we feel blessed by your presence among us today!   

POPE FRANCIS WILL CONCECRATE THE WORLD TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY ON OCTOBER 13  Pope Francis will consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Oct. 13 as part of the Marian Day celebration that will involve the iconic statue of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima. “The Holy Father strongly desires that the Marian Day may have present, as a special sign, one of the most significant Marian icons for Christians throughout the world, and, for that reason, we thought of the beloved original statue of Our Lady of Fatima,” wrote Cardinal Rino Fisichella. Cardinal Fisichella, who serves as president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, made his remarks in a letter to Bishop Antonio Marto of Leiria‐Fatima. According to the Portuguese shrine’s website, the statue of Our Lady of Fatima will leave for Rome on the morning of Oct. 12 and return on the afternoon of Oct. 13. The statue normally resides in the shrine’s Little Chapel of Apparitions. The cardinal said that “all ecclesial entities of Marian spirituality” are invited to take part in the celebration. Hundreds of movements and institutions that emphasize Marian devotion are expected to attend, the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima says.  The two‐day observance includes an Oct. 12 pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Peter and moments of prayer and meditation. On Oct. 13, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s Square. Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three shepherd children in the village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917. She warned of violent trials in the 20th century if the world did not make reparation for sins. She urged prayer and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. At the request of Pope Francis, Cardinal Jose Polycarp, the patriarch of Lisbon, consecrated the Pope’s pontificate to Our Lady of Fatima on May 13, her feast day.  YOU ARE INVITED TO TAKE PART IN CELEBRATIONS IN

 Our Lady pointed us to the indispensable means of prayer and penance so that our hearts may be purified, so that peace may be received by humanity. In this way we will surely witness the triumph of her Immaculate Heart.

The Outdoor Living Rosary Hosted by the St. Monica Women’s Prayer Group  Please join us on Thursday, Octo‐ber 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.  at St. Monica Church corner of Foster Ave., and Nottingham Ave., Partici‐pate in the tradition of the living rosary with members of our com‐munity.  We invite you to pray the rosary as followers of Mary, Mother of God.  All men, women and children of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend.  There is no cost to partici‐pate.  You do not need to know how to pray the rosary to attend. If you would like to be a participant in the living rosary, please be in the front of the church by 6:30 p.m.

Ladies of St. Anne will host a Card and Bunco Party and a Food Drive on Wednesday,  Octo‐ber 16th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Ferdinand Con‐vent located at 5936 W. Barry Ave. The tick‐ets will be $4.00 each. 

Dessert and coffee will be served. (Please note, this is not a luncheon).  We ask eve‐ryone to please bring some nonperishable food items, which will be donated to our “Food Pantry” at St. Ferdinand. Please join us for fun time, and bring a friend. All are welcome.   (A gentle reminder: Please remember to bring an unwrapped toy at our November 20th, meeting, more info. later.) Don’t for‐get, let’s get together on October 16th, and enjoy playing Bunco.

October is a month in which we honor our heavenly mother, Mary, in a special way, especially by saying the Rosary. October has also been designated Respect Life Month. Please honor Mary and also help The Women’s Center by 

offering your rosaries for the mothers who come to us for help during their pregnancies. In our 29 years we have enabled 37,000 mothers to give birth to their babies through our counseling, prayer, and material assistance.    We are happy to pass on your used baby equipment to mothers who cannot afford to buy it. Our need is great because we have two distribution centers. If you attend a garage sale, please ask the sellers to donate items to us. A donation receipt for tax purposes is available. We have a waiting list for 6 strollers, 3 double strollers, 3 bassinets, 4 bouncers, 5 pack n plays, 3 high chairs, 2 changing tables, and 6 infant car seats. It will be a great help if you can deliver these to us. For our address, or if a pick‐up by a volunteer is needed, please call 773‐794‐1313.   We have a great need for a couple of people to work as baby furniture volunteers helping load clients’ vehicles at our Chicago office on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 2 or 3 p.m. Being bi‐lingual is a plus. We also need volunteers to sort and hang clothing and assist clients in our Chicago Family Resource Room on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. For information about these volunteer opportunities, email jkeenan@womens‐center.org or call Jackie at 773‐794‐8807.

Every year our parishioners show their generosity by contributing to a food drive to support the  Missionaries of the Poor.  This year the food drive will take place TODAY.  A container is planned to be 

shipped to Jamaica this Christmas.  The items most needed are listed below.  Your   donations can be dropped off before each Mass.  A truck for this purpose is parked in front of the

Jezus Chrystus zawsze błogosławi i będzie źródłem radości i spełnienia.    Urodził się 7 kwietnia 1949 r. w Kupieninie w diecezji tarnowskiej. W Mędrzechowie uczęszczał do szkoły podstawowej, z kolei liceum ogólnokształcące ukończył w Dąbrowie Tarnowskiej w 1967 r. Następnie wstąpił do Wyższego Seminarium Duchownego w Tarnowie, gdzie w 1973 r. święcenia kapłańskie. Po święceniach pracował w parafii pw. św. Elżbiety w Starym Sączu. W roku 1975 skierowany został na studia specjalistyczne z zakresu teologii dogmatycznej na KUL‐u.  Dalsze studia kontynuował w Innsbrucku w Austrii gdzie uzyskał doktorat z teologii dogmatycznej.   Od 1 lutego 1983 r. rozpoczął pracę w watykańskiej Kongregacji Nauki Wiary. Prefektem tej dykasterii był kard. Joseph Ratzinger. 14 kwietnia 1988r. ks. Zimowski został kapelanem Jego Świątobliwości, a 10 lipca 1999 r. obdarzono go godnością prałata honorowego.  W czasie pracy w Watykanie ks. Zimowski był postulatorem w Kongregacji do Spraw Kanonizacyjnych przy procesach Karoliny Kózkówny i ks. Romana Sitki – z diecezji tarnowskiej, jak też Marii Julitty Ritz – z diecezji Würzburg w Niemczech. Podejmował też prace nad przygotowaniem „Katechizmu Kościoła Katolickiego”,jak też współpracował z Radiem Watykańskim. Ks. Zimowski podjął starania, by w rodzinnym Kupieninie powstał Dom Radosnej Starości im. Jana Pawła II i kaplica pw. Świętych Apostołów Piotra i Pawła. W domu tym schronienie może znaleźć 75 osób. Biskupem  radomskim  został mianowany przez  Jana Pawła  II w Wielki Czwartek 28 marca 2002 r. Głównym konsekratorem był kard.  Joseph Ratzinger, dzisiejszy papież emeryt Benedykt XVI. Od października  2007  r. był  członkiem Rady  Stałej  Konferencji Episkopatu Polski. W  latach 2008‐2009 pełnił  funkcję delegata Konferencji Episkopatu Polski ds. Duszpasterstwa Emigracji. 30 czerwca  2008  r.  otrzymał  doktorat  honoris  causa Chrześcijańskiej  Akademii  Teologicznej  w  Warszawie.  9 listopada  2008  roku  odznaczony  przez  Prezydenta  RP,  Lecha Kaczyńskiego Krzyżem Kawalerskim Orderu Odrodzenia Polski za zaangażowanie  na  rzecz  ratowania  żydowskich  zabytków cmentarnych.    18  kwietnia  2009  r.  papież  Benedykt  XVI mianował  bp.  Zygmunta  Zimowskiego  przewodniczącym Papieskiej  Rady  ds. Duszpasterstwa  Chorych  i  Służby  Zdrowia, wynosząc  go  równocześnie  do  godności  arcybiskupiej  i zwalniając z posługi biskupiej w Radomiu.

Autorzy podążają śladem cudów eucharystycznych, które wydarzyły się w pięciu miejscach na Ziemi, na pięciu kontynentach. Rozmawiają z ludźmi, którzy doświadczyli przemiany w życiu za sprawą głębokiego, niemal mistycznego zetknięcia z tajemnicą Eucharystii. Pokazują, jak te wydarzenia wpłynęły na ich dalsze losy, relacje rodzinne, życie osobiste i zawodowe.  W dokumencie autorzy powracają również do wydarzeń w Sokółce na Podlasiu, gdzie w październiku 2008 r. w kościele pw. św. Antoniego księdzu udzielającemu Komunii św. wypadł z puszki komunikant. Poddano go specjalistycznym badaniom patomorfologicznym. Specjaliści uznali, że materiał jest cząstką mięśnia sercowego w agonii. Wydarzenia te nazwano wówczas "cudem" w Sokółce. Kwestia jego uznania zależy od Stolicy Apostolskiej. Po projekcji możliwość kupna filmu na DVD.  Organizatorem jest red. Jacek Morawa.

O ŻYWYM RÓŻAŃCU Żywy Różaniec to grupa osób, która modli się codziennie modlitwą różańcową. To wspólnota, która pełni misję głoszenia Dobrej Nowiny przez modlitwę różańcową podejmowaną we wszystkich intencjach Kościoła. Żywy Różaniec składa się z Róż różacowych. Każda Róża składa się z 20 osób. Każda z nich w ciągu dnia odmawia jedną tajemnicę różańcową, w ten sposób codziennie odmawiane są wszystkie tajemnice różańca.   OBOWIĄZKI CZŁONKÓW ŻYWEGO RÓŻAŃCA ‐ głównym obowiązkiem jest odmawianie codziennie jednego dziesiątka Różańca; ‐ udział w comiesięcznej zmianie tajemnic różańcowych; ‐ częste przystępowanie do Sakramentów świętych oraz udział w procesjach ku czci Matki Bożej; ‐ rozszerzanie czci Maryi przykładem własnego życia i działalnością apostolską; ‐ odważne stawanie w obronie wiary i Kościoła na wzór św. Dominka; ‐ udział w pogrzebie zmarłego członka Żywego Różańca oraz w modlitwach za jego duszę.   Zapisy do Kół Żywego Różańca odbędą się w niedzielę 26 października po każdej Mszy św. w języku polskim w przedsionku kościoła. Serdecznie zapraszamy do naszej wspólnoty. 

ZAWIERZENIE ŚWIATA NIEPOKALANEMU SERCU MARYI W dniu dzisiejszym 13 października Papież Franciszek dokona poświęcenia świata Niepokalanemu Sercu Maryi. Na ten dzień – zgodnie z papieskim życzeniem – do Watykanu zostanie sprowadzona figura Matki Bożej z Fatimy, gdyż jest to „jeden z najważniejszych dla chrześcijan na całym świecie wizerunków maryjnych”. Fatimski akcent tego wydar‐zenia wiąże się również z samą datą, gdyż jest to dzień ostatniego objawienia się Maryi w Fatimie w 1917 roku. Bardzo serdecznie zapraszamy do wielkiej wspólnej modlitwy maryjnej DZISIAJ WIECZOREM na godz. 8:00PM.  Po mszy św. wiec‐zornej z figurką Matki Bożej Fatimskiej i świecami w ręku udamy się z procesją wokół naszego kościoła.  Pamiętajmy, że Maryja, która objawiła się w Fatimie, która obdarza narody świata w wielu sanktuariach swoimi łaskami, która ‐ jest naszym ratunkiem.  Matka Boża z Fatimy chce nam przypomnieć, że prawdziwy pokój nastąpi wtedy, gdy z naszej strony będzie nawrócenie, pokuta i wielka modlitwa.

 My wife and I purchased our home over thirty years ago, and I don’t recall anything about the closing beyond having to deal with a ton of paperwork‐‐all written in legalese‐‐so we were happy that our realtor referred us to a lawyer who specialized in such things. He walked us through the process, and what I remember most is that as each document was presented, he gave us an overview (as is, “this is document ABC; it addresses so‐and‐so” or “This is Docu‐ment XYZ; it address this‐and‐that”). Then, after we got the skinny on each, the lawyer concluded with, “It’s OK to sign.” He must have said it ten times, and each time, Gail and I did.      This all comes to mind as I consider today’s second reading. Here, Paul writes of the Good News to Timothy: “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my gospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained…” Paul goes on to say he is happy to bear his hardships for the sake of the Gospel so that others, too, might find salvation in Christ. Then Paul decisively con‐cludes: “This saying is trustworthy,” he says. “If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if we persevere, we shall also reign with him…” Alternatively: This is Jesus; he is the Good News. It’s OK to sign.     The Good News isn’t good news, though, unless it is good news for all. And this is Paul’s message. The Good News extends to the whole world. To Timothy. To the Galatians. To you and me and everybody else. And what exactly is the Good News of Jesus? It is 

described throughout the Gospels, of course, but perhaps nowhere better than in Christ’s response to people in the synagogue of Naz‐areth, when, after reading from Isaiah (“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free…”), Jesus hands the scroll to the attendant and says, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”      Which gives all of us plenty to be thankful for. But are we? I mean, really thankful? Some days I think I am. You know. When I stop to truly ponder it all. But most days life washes over me and I forget that everything I have, do, am, and will be comes to me from above. In today’s Gospel we hear of the ten lepers who cry out to Jesus in loud voices for pity. Jesus tells them to go show themselves to the priests. They do as directed, and as they are going, they are cleansed. Only one returns to Jesus to thank him, however, prompting Christ to say, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine?” A gentle rebuke, certainly, but at least the other nine had enough faith in Jesus to cry out to him in the first place, then immediately do as they were directed. The other nine, while less gracious than the cleansed Samaritan, still have merit. In my book, anyway. Because something deep down spoke to them as Christ walked by: “This is Jesus. He is the Good News. It’s OK to sign.” And they did.

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass.
