GOD’S WORD TODAY

During the past few years we have seen the tremendous destruction wrought by tsunamis and hurricanes. Surging water has a destructive power sometimes beyond imagining. We can understand why the disciples—most of whom were experienced fishermen—feared for their lives when the squall came up and waves began to break over the boat. This story, recounted in today’s Gospel, can inspire us to turn to the Lord when we are faced with those things that bring fear and desperation into our own lives. Let us not be afraid to ask God to come to our aid, especially when the storms of worry, fear, and anxiety begin to crash over our own lives. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. THE WIND AND THE SEA

Living along the shores of Lake Superi-or—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” Peo-ple who know Lake Su-perior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken

ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimo-nies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memo-ries of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of wa-ter subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When you are thinking about traditions in the Church, 1563 is a “watershed” year. The Council of Trent began a reform of the liturgy that put an end to old practices and set many of our present practic-es in place. For the first time, engaged people were absolutely required to appear before their parish priest, and to exchange consent in his presence along with two witnesses. To this day, Catholics are obliged to this form, namely: to marry another Cath-olic in the presence of a priest (or deacon) and two witnesses, unless dispensed from the law. The Council really didn’t forbid customs and ceremonies that added life to the celebration, but the mood of the times was dark and somewhat austere. Practices like the blessing of the marriage bed or using a can-opy for the nuptial blessing started to fade away, as did the custom of bringing the presents for the cou-ple to the church and the addition of fiddlers and jugglers to the procession. LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — Aquí se romperá la arrogancia de tus olas (Job 38:1, 8-11). Salmo — Demos gracias al Señor por sus bondades (Salmo 107 [106]). Segunda lectura — Ya todo es nuevo (2 Corintios 5:14-17). Evangelio — ¿Quién es éste, a quien hasta el viento y el mar obedecen? (Marcos 4:35-41).

EL VIENTO Y EL MAR Los que conocen bien el Lago Superior le tienen un saludable respeto, y siempre están alerta sobre sus caprichosos cambios de ánimo. Muchos barcos hundidos y muchos botes hechos astillas son testigos de lo que el lago puede hacer cuando está de mal humor. Las lecturas de este domingo nos evocan me-morias de ese lago, del poderoso río Mississippi o del océano mismo. ¿Quién, fuera de Dios, podrá con-trolar esas aguas poderosas, o imponerles límites, diciendo “Hasta aquí llegarás”? El lago que describe el Evangelio de hoy era un lago en el que se levanta-ban súbitas tormentas, en las que los vientos hura-canados agitaban olas enormes. Pero estas fuerzas tan poderosas se someten a la voluntad de Dios. Los marineros y los pescadores le tienen un saludable respeto al poder de las aguas. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Jesús promete a sus discípulos una vida en abundancia (Juan 10:10). Él desea lo mejor para no-sotros y quiere que estemos bien en todos los aspec-tos de nuestra vida: familia y amistades, trabajo, economía, salud, etcétera. Sin embargo, Jesús también nos promete la persecución y el maltrato (Marcos 10:29; Mateo 5:11; Lucas 6:22; Juan 15:18). La vida abundante es bella pero nunca fácil. La vida cristiana es como toda vida humana; tiene mo-mentos de tranquilidad y de tempestad. Así como un día nos brilla el sol, otro día nos sacuden los vientos y nuestras pequeñas lanchas parecen inundarse. No hay que desanimarse o asustarse cuando lleguen estas tormentas. Más bien, hay que recordar el Evangelio (Marcos 4:35-41) donde Jesús duerme en la barca de sus discípulos. Es interesante el detalle de Jesús quien, cansado y tranquilo, duerme mientras el mar sacude a la barca y a los discípulos. Menos mal que se les ocurrió recurrir al Señor. Oración del Día del Padre Dios nuestro Padre, Tú gobiernas y proteges a toda la gente y los guías con amor de padre. Tú pones a un padre en una familia como signo de tu amor, tu cuidado y protección constante. Que los padres de todas partes sean fieles al ejemplo mostrado en las Escrituras: firmes en el amor, que perdonen ofensas, que sostengan a la familia, cuidando a aquellos necesitados. Concede tu sabiduría a los padres para que puedan ser alentados y guíen a sus hi-jos. Mantenlos saludables para que puedan mantener a sus familias. Guía a cada padre con el Espíritu de tu amor para que crezcan en santidad y lleven a tu famil-ia más cerca de ti. Amén

God our Father, you govern and protect your people and shepherd them with a father’s love. You place a father in a family as a sign of your love, care, and constant protection. May fathers everywhere be faithful to the example shown in the Scriptures: steadfast in love, forgiving transgressions, sustaining the family, caring for those in need. Give your wisdom to fathers that they may encourage and guide their children. Keep them healthy so they may support a family. Guide every father with the Spirit of your love that they may grow in holiness and draw their family ever closer to you. Amen
