Pastor's Message
The Church and School Are Ready For Mass Just over a week ago the Government of Ontario allowed churches to open and Bishop Crosby announced that Sunday Mass would begin on June 21st. It’s been quite a week for our parish. Last Sunday we marked Corpus Christi with Drive-In Adoration at Camp Brébeuf. About 20 vehicles gathered on a beautiful day. (See photo.) It wasn’t the usual Corpus Christi procession. But it was our parish’s first public liturgy since the churches were closed back in March. After beginning the Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus a week ago Wednesday, and praying that we would be able to use Sacred Heart Catholic School for Sunday Mass, I received word this past Monday our may request was approved by the School Board. That good news came just in time. On Thursday I met with David Mencfeld, the Principal, and Kathleen McClinton, the Custodian, to plan for how we would implement the Bishop’s protocols for celebrating Mass at the school, which include sanitizer and physical distancing of chairs. (See photos.) Meanwhile, Jenny Benjamin cleaned the
church and Marie Henault attended to the plants and flowers. (I kept them alive by watering them, but they needed a lot more care than I was able to give them.) Sophie Debbané, my Administrative Assistant, and Jenny then roped off pews and taped the floor in preparation for celebrating Mass on Friday morning in honour of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. (See photo.) Stephen Roloson, our Music Director, provided music minis-try and the live stream feed. A recording of the Mass can be viewed at our YouTube Channel. Nine parishioners attended. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate the patronal feast of parish with parishioners. Thank you all for your planning and hard work. I’m looking forward to celebrating Sunday Mass at 11:00am in the school gym. For now, there is only one Sunday Mass scheduled. We will not be able to celebrate Sunday Mass in the church until physical distancing requirements are relaxed.
While the church and school are ready for you, many of you are not ready for the church and school. I’ve heard from older parishioners who don’t feel it’s safe yet. I’ve heard from parents whose children are not yet comfortable going to large gatherings after three months of fearful physical distancing. I get it. I understand. Whenever you are ready to attend Mass, please be aware of the following considerations: 1) online registration is required for weekday Mass (online registration is not required for Sun-day Mass), 2) if you are sick, please stay home, 3) you are strongly encourage to wear a mask, 4) for Sunday Mass at the school, please enter through the back gym doors (not the front doors), 5) for weekday Mass in the church, please enter through the front doors (not the side doors), 6) there will be no Offertory during Mass (offerings can be left in the baskets when leaving), 7) the priest will say “The Body of Christ” once and all will respond “Amen” before Commun-ion is distributed in silence, 8) remove your mask by the string while the person ahead of you is receiving Communion, 9) Communion in the hand only, 10) until further notice, no gathering outside after Mass (at some point I hope we will be able to have hospitality in the school yard while maintaining physical distancing).
For many of you I’m sure it’s been a difficult three months waiting to return to the sacramental life of the Church. For others, I realize that it’s not over and that you will need to wait a bit longer. Nevertheless, let us continue to pray for one another. And pray that one day soon we will all be able to gather together again as a parish community to celebrate Mass and give glo-ry to God. Fr. Mark Morley

DIOCESE OF HAMILTON Re-Opening of Churches: With the re-opening of places of worship in Ontario, Bishop Crosby announced that the churches in our diocese can be opened starting on June 16th. Please visit the diocese website for his letters with the announcement and the re-quired practices for entry into the church: https://hamiltondiocese.com/coronavirus-updates. Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel: The Sisters of the Carmel of Saint Joseph will pray for you during the Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 8th to July 16th, 2020 Are you trou-bled? Do you need spiritual support? You can participate in the Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Send your prayer intention slip with your name and address to Carmel of Saint Joseph 1127 Carmel-Koch Road, R.R. #1, St. Agatha, ON N0B 2L0. For more information check the website for the Carmelite Nuns: http://thecarmel.ca/.
PARISH UPDATES Re-Opening of the Church: The church is now re-opened. How-ever, only 8 households fit in the church with social distancing. So Sunday Mass will be celebrated at 11 am in the gym at Sacred Heart School. No registration is needed as there is plenty of space for social distancing. There will be no Saturday 5 pm or Sunday 9 am Mass at this time. Be assured, however, if you are concerned about attending Mass, the dispensation from attending Mass on Sunday is still in effect and Sunday Mass will continue to be live streamed during the state of emergency. Registration for Weekday Masses: You will need to register pri-or to each weekday Mass as there is only room for 8 households with social distancing. Here is the link to register using Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/sacred-heart-of-jesus-parish-30530393162 Live-Streamed Events: During the state of emergency, the Sun-day 11 am Mass and Tuesday 7 pm Mass will continue to be live streamed. The link to join is available on the events page here: https://www.facebook.com/sacredheartofjesusrockwood/. Parish Office: Sophie and Sarah will resume working in the of-fice. However, it will remain closed to the public. Arrangements can be made to pick up or drop things off using the parish mailbox. If you need to meet with any of the staff, you can email [email protected] to arrange a time to meet in Coulson Hall, as this space allows for social distancing. The back entrance of Coulson Hall, off of the church parking lot will be used. Perpetual Adoration Program: We are hoping to re-start perpet-ual Adoration in the church very soon. We are in need of a few more parishioners to sign up for one hour a week. Spending time with our Lord in Adoration is a great way to deepen your relation-ship with him. If you are interested please email Sophie at [email protected].
