The Art of CollectingThe first step in mak-

ing money with col-lectibles is locating

them. Most people have a treasure trove in their at-tic, garage, or storage unit and don’t even know it. The average jewelry box can yield hundreds and even thousands of dollars worth of jewelry. With gold well over a thousand dollars per ounce even the broken chains and bent or dam-aged rings can be worth good money. Also, old baseball cards, stamps and coins are items worth get-ting appraised. We all have heard the stories about the Honus Wagner card or the 1943 copper penny found in attic collections. The first place to start is finding or locating items you may al-ready have in your posses-sion.

Depending on where you live you may have a lot of other good sources for collectibles that you never considered before. Good places to find collectibles

are: yard sales, estate sales, local classified ads, websites, local auctions, thrift stores and more. One of the best web sites for finding local auctions is Auctionzip.Com. Once on the site you can narrow down your search by typing in your zip code to locate auctions near you. Also, you can find local auctions that have the types of col-lectables you are looking for. This is the best site for locating local auctions any-where in the US.

Once you find a place that has collectibles, now you are ready to perhaps do some buying. Before you get out your cash or checkbook, you will need to do a lot of research to determine what is worth purchasing. We will go into further detail on doing the research in the next edition of this publication.

If you go to a local auction and are just getting started, it is best to start with box lots. Most auction-

eers will save these lots for last. When the auction is nearing the end, people will start to leave and the auctioneer starts putting items together to sell them fast. Real valuables have been found in box lots. The only problem with box lots is the amount of worthless items that will need to be gone through as you try to locate the valuable items within it. Look at it as a trea-sure hunt. One small item within a large box can pay for the lot many times over. Box lots are the true money maker for many collectibles hunters.

Another great way to find collectibles and make a solid profit from them is to go to estate or yard sales and negotiate with the seller. The majority of the time if you are willing to buy several items at a yard sale or in some case everything they have, they will give you a great deal. If you think about it they just want to get rid of the stuff and if you take it all they will cut you a deal. Many collec-tors have purchased very valuable items through this technique. It is best to go to yard sales later in the morn-ing when the people selling are getting tired of stand-ing around outside and just want to be done. You can certainly find good deals early in the morning too, but when looking to buy a large amount from one seller it is best to go later in the morn-ing because the sellers are more willing to give you a good deal.

With all of this said the main thing to remember is that negotiation is your best friend and the worst that someone can say is no and you can make them a better offer or walk away. If you are lucky enough to have a small auction hall near you that runs regularly sched-uled auctions you will want to visit them often and you should come across large lots often and that is where you will make your money..

Have you ever wished for a few more hours in the day? Why is that some people seem to get everything done effortlessly and others feel that time constantly eludes them? The secret to managing your time isn›t working more hours. It›s about prioritizing the important things and learning to use the time you have more efficiently and effectively. The secret is working smarter, not harder. Some of us, by nature, organize and get tasks out of the way before we relax, while others of us play first and work later. It is important to first recognize which type you are and whether your style is allowing

you to have the life you really want. Maybe you are super-organized at work, but burned out because you don’t know how to make time for yourself. Maybe you are naturally a less organized person who knows how to relax, but you are dissatisfied because you aren’t fulfilling your goals and dreams. Rather than labeling yourself or beating yourself up, realize that time management is an area of your life that you can strengthen. Like a new muscle, it takes practice and repetition to make it stronger. To help you get started, here are some steps to streamline your days at work and at home. Try the first one or two that jump out at you-

Allocate time for planning

and organizing.Create to-do lists that are

realistic, not intimidating. Use only one to-do list.

Under-schedule your time- Leave time for the unexpected and for interruptions. When you estimate how long something will take, add on a third of that time.

Schedule your time in a way that reduces interruptions that lower your productivity.

Practice the art of intelligent neglect-Eliminate trivial tasks.

Prioritize what is most important and do that first.

Consider your biological prime time- At what time of day do you work best? Plan to do your most important work at that time.

If you say yes to everything that comes your way, learn to

say no.Ask for help and delegate.In the evening make your

to-do list for the next day, so it will be out of your brain and on a piece of paper. Leave work with a clear head and a clean desk.

Acknowledge yourself daily for all that you have accomplished.

Also take a look at the two biggest hindrances to using time effectively-procrastinating and lacking purpose. We usually procrastinate when a task seems too daunting, too large or too complex, or when we feel we won›t be able to handle it. When you get that «deer in the headlights» feeling, try «chunking»- break the large task into smaller, manageable action steps and start with the first one. We also often drag our heels or use our time inefficiently because we are bored, unengaged and uninspired. The most effective people will tell you that they love what they do and are aligned with a greater purpose. When it comes to managing your time, you may need to ask the larger questions, «Am I doing what I love to do? Am I doing something meaningful to me? As you strengthen your new time management muscle, keep your focus on getting organized so that you can live the life you came here for. Instead of being a chore, good timeAmanagement can be your ticket to more fun, greater satisfaction and a vibrant, exciting life.

Have you ever met a child who didn‚Äôt know the stranger rules? Why then, if every kid knows the “rules,” will ten-out-of-ten kids go with the right stranger with the right story?

In fact, that truth is the one thing that all crimi-nally-abducted kids have in common. Regardless of the kind of family they came from, their looks, size, or anything else - the one thing all of these victims have in common is... ...they all knew the rules!

Every parent, when discussing a miss-ing child or abduction, proudly states, “my child knows the rules. I made sure I taught them so I don’t have to worry.”

They make this state-ment as though the par-ents of abducted children were somehow neglect-ful in their duty. The im-plication is that:

1) If the other parent had, this wouldn’t have happened, and...

2) I did, so I’ve got nothing to worry about.

And NOTHING could be further from the truth.

To prove it, let me ask you a question. “Why did you teach your child the stranger rules?“

If your answer is differ-ent than, “So they’ll be safe,” I’d be surprised.

And why shouldn’t you? You want them to be safe, right?

Of course.Here‘s another ques-

tion. “Why did your child learn the stranger rules?”

If I were a betting man, I’d be willing to bet your answer was something like:

“So they’ll be safe.”And, you’d be... wrong!The problem with this

thinking is the fact that your child is not an adult brain in a little body.

Your child doesn’t understand a lot of the things you say because the concepts are just too big and they haven’t had the adult experiences you have.

Don’t believe me?As an example, let’s

say my daughter is about to stick a hair pin, into a light socket. To “help her understand” the error of her ways, I stop her and tell her, “honey, don’t do that. There’s electricity in there and if you do that, you’ll get shocked and you might die. Do you understand?”

And, you know what? My daughter is going to say the same thing to me that your child said when you explained the strang-er rules and asked, “do you understand?”

She’s going to say, “yes daddy.” But, did she? Really?

Does she really un-derstand what I just said when I used the words: “Electricity,” “Shock” or “Die”?

Or, did I just give her a reason to find out for herself?!

Let me ask that ques-tion again. Why did your child bother learning the stranger rules?

The answer, from the perspective of a child of five and under is...because it makes you happy when they get the answer right!

That’s it. Nothing about “danger Nothing about “strangers.

Change anything about how you’ll think about teaching your child about strangers? Make you want to find a bet-ter way to keep your little

one safe?I hope so.

The unexpected happens all the time. Advance planning for the unexpected can be very helpful when you , yourself are elderly or you have elderly parents, aunts, uncles and friends. The

likelihood of anyone over 65 years of age making an emergency room visit is high. The reason for these trips can vary from a heart attack, stroke, complications of medication, diabetes, and falls. With the odds in your favor that you will need emergency room services taking some precautionary steps now can help you or your loved one get the best care and results. If you feel that you have a condition that increases your risk for emergency visits such as diabetes or a heart condition, talk with your physician regarding which hospital they would recommend for you to visit in case of an emergency. If possible, have a family member or yourself call your

physician before you leave for the emergency room so they are aware that you will be there and they can begin coordinating your care. It is crucial that the paramedics, triage nurses and physician know what medications you are taking, the dosage and the schedule. This information should be on your person at all times. You can write in on a card and place it in your wallet or purse. You should also keep a list of all your medical conditions and surgeries. You should also carry on your person the names and phone numbers of your emergency contacts. If you have a Living Will or Power of Attorney please give this information to your designated contacts and

also your physician. If you have a serious medical condition, wear a medical alert bracelet so emergency personnel know about your condition and/or allergies. Be open and honest with the Emergency room staff regarding your symptoms. If your symptoms have subsided tell them about them in detail. E m e r g e n c i e s happen everyday however, if you or your loved one are prepared for it, your experience and your treatment can save you from a life-threatening ordeal.
