Courtyard Theater Rang-es from “G” to “PG-17” Rated Events: In the com-ing half year the Court-yard Theater, located just outside J.C. Penney at the Susquehanna Mall, will present produc-tions and concerts which will be rated from those fit for the entire family to those which parents may not want to bring younger children to. The next play being per-formed at the live theater is the musical “1776” which the theater own-ers are sure that the entire family will enjoy. As the name might imply, the play centers around the meeting of the 2nd Con-tinental Congress as they decide whether or not to declare the colonies’ in-

dependent from Great Britain. “1776” premieres of Friday, June 13th at 7:00 PM and will run for three weekends with per-formances on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday matinees. The play will end on Sunday, June 29th, the Sunday before the 4th of July weekend. On July 12th, for one night only at 7:00 PM, the theater will host a concert by a group called “Bee-Geez USA”, a tribute band to the Brothers Gibb. The concert is nearly sold out and less than 30 tickets remain. This is the first time that the entire capac-ity of the seating is being used in the Courtyard Theater.A week later, well-known local celebrity Frank Fe-

dele will present a con-cert named “Flash from the Past”, a two-part show featuring “Orbisonia” and the sounds of Roy Orbison and the “Boomer Legends Show” which features rock tunes of the ‘60s and 70’s performed by Frank’s wonderful band. This show will be held on two nights only, Friday and Saturday, July 18th and 19th at 7:00 PM. During that week, the children’s camp for kids 7-17-years old called “The Young Person’s Dramatic Academy will be held, for two weeks, Monday thru Friday, the 14th thru 18th and the 21st thru 25th, from 10AM to 2 PM each day. The kids can bring their own lunch, or Gar-field’s Restaurant will of-fer three different lunches delivered to the theater for only $1.00 a day. The cost of the camp is $150, but only 20 kids can attend. A few opening still remain. Then, on August 1st, the theater offers to more mature audiences, the Burlesque extravaganza, “Madame Burlesque”, presented by the famous Boston Babydolls. This one night event, scheduled for 8:00 PM, is a tribute to the ladies of the famous art form of the 1920s thru 1940s when burlesque of-fered sexy ladies and hi-larious comedy. Dozens of famous comedians got their start in burlesque houses and the glamorous girls became as famous as movie stars. Names like: Blaze Starr, Zorita, Sally Rand and Gypsy Rose Lee were well known to the general public. The Boston Babydolls show is touring the US and the Courtyard Theater was happy to be able to give audiences from the Susquehanna Valley a chance to see them LIVE. Finally, after two more plays: “Over the River and Through the Woods” and “Radio Razzle Dazzle” in August and September,

the Courtyard Theater will present the live ver-sion of the cult favorite musical, “The Rocky Horror Show” which, although rated “PG”, is well known to have audi-ence participation which causes the warning to potential audience mem-bers who have never seen either the play or movie to expect shocking lan-guage from the viewers. As the characters developed I placed them in the vari-ous settings throughout. Even though this is fic-tion, history played a big role. Developing my thoughts and characters led to a story that eventu-ally became this novel.” Meeting will begin at 7:00 pm with a very brief business meeting fol-lowed by a guest speaker and concluding with light

Artists from as far as Harrisburg painted throughout the day at four easement properties owned by the Linn Con-servancy: in Union Coun-ty the Dale Engle Walker House, in Northumber-land County the Montan-don Marsh, in Snyder County the Constance property and the Glacial Pools in Lycoming Coun-ty. PACKWOOD ANNOUNCES

SUMMER EXHIBITIn conjunction with the Lewisburg Gar-

den Club’s Garden Tour of Lewisburg, Packwood House Museum opened their 2014 summer exhibit, “A Lady and Her Garden: The Lifework of Edith Fether-ston,” on June 7. Featuring examples of Mrs. Fetherston’s own artwork, garden club memorabilia, and flower-themed collections, the exhibit takes a look at the museum founder’s interests in bota-ny, gardening, and art.

A lifelong member of the Garden Club of America, Edith traveled far and wide to enjoy the gardens of America and Europe. She was known for magnificent gardens when she and her husband lived in Cuylerville, NY, Pittsburgh, and Lewisburg. Also an amateur botanist, she discovered a previously unknown variety of pennywort in upstate New York that was eventually named after her. She also self-published a booklet detailing how she converted land that was previ-ously thought of as a wasteland over the salt mine managed by her husband into a beautiful, thriving garden.

Edith Fetherston’s interest in art can be seen all throughout Packwood House Museum. A self-taught painter, she com-pleted nearly 115 paintings in just a short span of time in the early 1930s. In most of her work, it’s clear to see how garden-ing and flowers inspired her. Several of these pieces are on display in the ex-hibit, along with programs from her art shows and other flower- and garden-themed artifacts she collected, as well as correspondence she exchanged with Georgia O’Keeffe, to whom she showed her artwork in the 1930s.

“A Lady and Her Garden” is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through July 12th. For more infor-mation on the Packwood House Muse-um, its programs or its exhibits, please call the museum at 570-524-0323 or visit www.packwoodhousemuseum.com.

MERS, flu, a n t h r a x , e b o l a … These are

the headlines. You may think that what you eat has nothing to do with whether or not you get the flu this year. Or you may start to realize we are what we eat.

Crap = Feeling Crappy

Nutrition plays a huge role in how we feel, both physically and mentally. It determines what our bodies can and can’t do. Here’s why:

• When we feel bad about what we eat, our bod-ies depress our digestive system, leading to poorly digested food and constipation

• Our bodies know when bad food is eaten and slow things down

• 70% of our im-mune system is in our digestive sys-tem – if it’s fight-ing bad food, it can’t fight the cold

• Processed foods contain few vita-mins and minerals – we are starved for good nutrients

• Processed foods contain lots of chemicals and preservatives – our bodies are fighting the toxins continuously

Even if we are healthy, and we eat bad

food, our bodies have to fight the toxins. It leaves our immune sys-tem weak. Considering we are exposed to hun-dreds, if not thousands, of bacteria, viruses, and allergens every day, we need our systems in top form. The immune sys-tem should not have to fight bad food, chemi-cals, and preservatives just from the foods we eat. It should be free to fight the inevitable patho-gens we need to fight.

The body cannot form repairs of organs and systems and pro-duce proper hormones without proper nutrition. That’s why the fat-free craze hurt so many people. Without proper hormone production, we fall into disease: diabe-tes, thyroid problems, growth disorders, sexual dysfunction, and can-cers.

Next, look at our ability to heal. Take a simple cut, for example; when our body has all the nutrients, fats, and water it needs to func-tion optimally, little cuts and bruises heal within 3-5 days.

But if you have a disease to start with, the body is so busy trying to repair vital damage done by the disease, it can’t heal the simple cut effectively. If the body is fighting bad food, it fights the food first, and then heals. It can take 7-10 days to heal.

The body tries to repair itself using scarce resources. The repairs are sloppy, slow to com-plete.

Eating processed food just robs your body of the ability to fight off all those illnesses.

I worked with a woman a few years ago. She was always sick and I irritated her so much because I was never sick. How could this be? We shared the same space 40 hours a week, I spoke with her frequently, and we shared the same table at lunch. Here’s the difference: my meals always included veg-etables and was often leftovers from home and I exercised regularly. Her meals were fast food, she smoked, and walking into work was a struggle.

Your first line of de-fense against the bugs that make you sick is your meal choices. Choose fruits and veg-etables to make most of your meals and you cut your chances of get-ting sick by a whole lot. The side effect may just be that you lose a few pounds!

and was such a hit that not only was he booked almost immediately for that event in 2014, he was also added to two other events as part of a family friendly schedule of ac-tivities. Two events will take place at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds in central Pennsylvania, with the other at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds in Blooms-burg, Pennsylvania. A tall lanky man with a funny hat, Jim is an ex-perienced animal handler

filled with enthusiasm and an outrageous wit. He presents the crazi-est and most educational wildlife show ever seen and based on the reac-tions of guests at Carlisle in 2013; people will keep talking about for weeks after seeing the show. With over 25 years as an animal handler, Bwana Jim and his wife and fel-low handler, Linda travel the world presenting their unique wildlife show. Jim specializes in reptiles

such as snakes, alligators, and turtles, plus show-cases other exotic critters like armadillos, wallabies and exotic birds. Jim’s rare gift for handling animals helps him bet-ter share his knowledge in an incredibly fun and entertaining way that is more memorable than any classroom experience. Each Bwana Jim show-case is free with event admission. Further, kids who attend can easily find themselves hands on with

the excitement. Kids 12 and under are admit-ted free to all events promoted by Carlisle, regardless of event loca-tion. Further, while adult tickets vary per event, on average they are just $10, making a family outing with Carlisle that much more affordable. Jim isn’t the only kids’ activ-ity either. The same four events mentioned above have a dedicated kids’ area, which includes a bounce house, swings,

arts, crafts, games, rac-ing simulators and more. Complete Carlisle Events information can be ob-tained by calling 717-243-7855 or by visiting www.CarlisleEvents.com.Farm, Garden & Out-
