The Real Mary Poppins
Sunday, 2 February 2014
The Real Mary Poppins is a one-hour documentary that explores and traces the parallel lives of Travers and Mary Poppins from their origins through to their transformation from servant to seer.
Mary Poppins is a universal and much loved character who has enthralled three generations of children and parents, joining the select company of Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Winnie the Pooh. But very few people know much about the Australian creator of Mary Poppins and her remarkable but troubled life which gave rise to the beloved nanny.
Behind the iconic Disney film, Mary Poppins is a funny, moving, twenty-year debate between Pamela Travers and Walt Disney about how the flying nanny would be immortalised on the silver screen.
It is now the subject of a major motion picture, Saving Mr Banks (starring Emma Thompson as Pamela), also produced by Essential Media & Entertainment (along with other companies) which is now playing in Australian cinemas nationwide.
Pamela Travers' fascinating story was first explored in the 2002 documentary The Shadow of Mary Poppins also produced by Essential Media & Entertainment.
The new documentary The Real Mary Poppins draws on extensive archive and interviews to tell the real story of Pamela Travers and the question so many have asked: Where did Mary Poppins come from? It also includes interviews with the cast of Saving Mr Banks which provide insight into Traver's and Disney's relationship.
The Real Mary Poppins reveals Pamela Travers as a complex woman with many contradictions. She could be priggish, snobbish, vain, bossy, humourless, fiercely independent and very practical. In short, she was Mary Poppins. And like her creation, Pamela saw - and gave others the ability to see - the magical in the commonplace, the extraordinary in the everyday.

The Broken Shore
Sunday, 2 February 2014
Based on the novel from Australia's finest crime writer, Peter Temple, The Broken Shore is an evocative crime thriller set against a background of police corruption, racism and family tragedy.
Detective Joe Cashin (Don Hany) has returned to the coastal village of Port Monro where he grew up. Broken in both body and spirit as a result of a botched homicide raid in Melbourne, Cashin and junior police officer Kendall Rodgers (Marni Johnston) run the local cop shop. Not everyone is pleased to see Cashin back. His mother Sybil (Noni Hazlehurst) wants Joe to leave immediately, before the dark cloud of his father's death overwhelms him.
Joe's new neighbour, Helen Castleman (Claudia Karvan), also stirs up memories. Thirty years ago she planted a summer kiss on Joe that still lingers. When Helen accuses him of putting up illegal fences, desire and attraction are laced with hostility.
When well-heeled philanthropist Charles Bourgoyne (Ralph Cotterill) is brutally bashed and robbed in his home, Joe's investigation uncovers a cycle of lies, betrayal and systematic corruption in a community where tensions over race, class and politics are at boiling point.
Capturing the chilling action and laconic wit of Peter Temple's internationally acclaimed novel, this television adaptation filmed against a rugged coastline brings alive the novel's cast of complex characters as it slowly reveals the shocking face behind a community's respectable mask.
Also stars Anthony Hayes, Catherine McClements, Erik Thomson, Tony Briggs, Dan Wyllie, Robyn Nevin, Meyne Wyatt, Dan Hamill, Bruce R Carter, Wayne Blair, Jim Russell.

Family Confidential
Tuesday, 4 February 2014 New SeriesFamily Confidential returns for a third, headline-grabbing series. Narrated by Gretel Killeen, this series showcases some of the biggest names in Australia and the world, and reveals the private story behind the public face.
The first episode focuses on Deborra-Lee and Hugh Jackman. From humble Australian beginnings, the last decade has seen them catapulted into the heady stratosphere of international superstardom.
But the Jackman's red carpet celebrity hides a very different reality. Known for having one of the most solid marriages in Hollywood, Deborra-Lee and Hugh have a commitment to family that goes further than most. Their determination to put their family first has taken them on an extraordinary journey that is now changing the lives of children and families across the globe.
As the gossip tabloids have recounted, Deborra-Lee and Hugh met on the set of ABC prison drama Corelli. It was a meeting of hearts and minds - shared values shaped, perhaps most of all, by similar childhoods within single-parent families. But when it came to starting a family of their own, Deb and Hugh would run headlong into an entrenched anti-adoption culture that treated would-be adopting parents almost as criminals.
It was the start of an extraordinary personal journey that has become a mission. Today, Deborra-Lee's crusade to ensure children in need of homes find loving new families has brought about historic change. While Hugh works on his next summer blockbuster, she's now taking the campaign for adoption reform all the way to the United Nations.

The Moodys: Australia Day
Wednesday, 5 February 2014 New SeriesThe Moodys is an eight-part comedy series focused on the loveable, yet seasonally dysfunctional Moody family as they come together for eight family events, over a single year.
Following on from the popular A Moody Christmas, Dan (Ian Meadows) and Cora (Jane Harber) have finally returned home to Australia to set up house together. However, life back in Australia is not turning out quite as planned. As they struggle to make ends meet, the Moody family home is up for sale; Sean's (Patrick Brammall) funeral fireworks business is going great guns; Maree (Tina Bursill) and Kevin (Danny Adcock) test the freewheeling lifestyle of the grey nomads; Bridget (Rachel Gordon) and Roger (Phil Lloyd) find out if there's friendship after divorce, especially after Bridget meets the charming Matt (Jonny Pasvolsky); and Uncle Terry (Darren Gilshenan) is in a tangled love affair with Yvonne (Sacha Horler), a one-woman force of nature.
A year of highs and lows unfolds against a backdrop of hysterical family gatherings including Terry's Australia Day barbecue, which quickly disintegrates into a flag-burning disaster; the annual Moody family Easter Weekend in a caravan park that is not what anyone expected; and Kevin and Maree's anniversary which turns into mayhem after the surprise arrival of a demanding family member. Plus more challenging moments such as Sean's court case, Bridget's surprise birthday and Terry's run for council.
It's been 12 months since we last saw the Moody family. Maree and Kevin have put the Moody home up for sale, outraging Sean. He's refusing to leave his house and is squatting in his old room. Dan and Cora have returned home from the UK and, in an attempt to impress Cora's family, Dan invites them to Uncle Terry's Australia Day BBQ.
Loaded up like a packhorse, Terry arrives early on Australia Day and claims the best spot in the park. However, he's not the only one. A quarrel with an Aboriginal family ensues until a compromise is reached and the two families decide to share lunch.
But the barbecue disintegrates into another Moody disaster after a flag is accidently burnt, Dan is stung by a bluebottle, and an unexpected visitor returns after a year at sea.

The Doctor Blake Mysteries
Friday, 7 February 2014
Doctor Lucien Blake (Craig McLachlan) finally returns to Ballarat from his journey to China. But the long-awaited reunion with his daughter hadn't been what he'd hoped for - she blamed him for her mother's death. She has a life of her own, a child of her own; the gap of culture and understanding between them is unbridgeable. The search for his lost family had been the focus of the past 15 years of his life, and now it appears to be over.
But people are waiting for him in Ballarat. Jean (Nadine Garner), his housekeeper and confidante, in so many ways his companion, if only the temper of the time and their own damaged hearts would allow it. And Mattie (Cate Wolfe), a young woman wrestling with career and relationships in a period when, if you were a woman, marrying meant leaving the workforce. But can Blake find it in himself to accept the responsibilities of his new, patched-together family?
And there's unrest in the station. Danny Parks has been sent to Melbourne, replaced by a new Senior Constable, Charlie Davis (Charlie Cousins), with questionable loyalties. Word has reached some powerful people that Lawson's police surgeon is a loose cannon - threatening investigations and the reputation of the force - and Charlie has been sent by Command in Melbourne to report back as to what's going on in Lawson's station. Charlie might be a very capable policeman, but is he on Blake's side?
So, with Charlie reporting his every move back to Melbourne, Blake sets about solving the strange and baffling murders that come his way, and the mysteries hiding around every corner - in the church, politics, art, rock'n'roll. Nothing is sacred. And no one is safe.
In the first episode, Blake returns from China and finds himself thrown straight into a murder investigation: the newly elected mayor of Ballarat is found dead at the bottom of the town hall steps. But threads of betrayal, adultery and double dealing lead Blake to some high and low places, and Jean - kept in the dark - worries for him.

Devil Island: Devil D-Day
Saturday, 8 February 2014
Episode two follows the devils to an isolation centre in Hobart where scientists from the Save the Tasmanian Devil team select the final 15 and prepare to release them into the wild for the first time on Maria Island.
Scientists put Tasmanian devils Reba, Remmy and Ruben through personality tests to make sure they can cope with the adventure that awaits them - and freedom for the first time - on remote Maria Island. To survive in the wild, the devils must shy away from human contact but remain curious about their surrounds.
First up is Reba. To earn her spot in the Maria Island squad she must avoid the food hidden under a beach ball - a test designed to determine whether she'll avoid human temptations on the island. A mirror tests her aggression, and finally a piece of tasty meat on a barbeque fork reveals whether or not she will steer clear of tourists. The devils are then sent off to 'boot camp' where they are taught how to scavenge. Soon a hierarchy emerges as 'big Jimmy' hogs the food and hapless Manny goes without.
Once training is complete, the scientists put the devils through final health checks and fit five lucky recipients with GPS collars so they can track their every move. Then comes the moment they have waited for - the culmination of three years of planning and hard work - as the scientists load the boat and set off for Maria Island to release the devils into the wild.
