    General Tour

  • Just what is TV, anyway?Television is a system of electronics that changes pictures and sounds into radio signals called waves and lets us broadcast them through the air.Broadcasting means just what it sounds like. Cast means to throw, and Broad means across a big area. Broadcasting simply means throwing a TV or radio signal over a really big area.

  • The Beginning of TVRadio and television antennas come in many shapes and sizes.Radio was invented before television. TV is a lot like radio, just with pictures!Radio was invented by a man named Marconi in 1895. That is just a little over 100 years ago. When George Washington was President, TV would still not be around for over 150 years (until the late 1930s).

    General Tour

  • Introduction Television stations are where programs and commercials come from. Many programs come from other stations far away. They send programs to local stations through satellites orbiting the Earth.Big satellite dishes receive those programs for the local station to broadcast. As you get closer, you will see many satellite dishes around the station.

    General Tour

  • Introduction We see TV in our homes because powerful electronic signals are transmitted through the air from the tower to our home.

The signals in the air can be received at your TV set by an antenna sometimes called rabbit ears.Every TV tower has a transmitter building nearby with all the electronics needed to send the signal over the air.

    General Tour

  • Introduction The TV signal in the air goes to our cable company too. Then it travels to your home through wires on telephone poles that connect to the TV.This is called cable TV because of how the signal gets to you.

    General Tour

  • Introduction Some homes get their TV signals directly from a tiny satellite dish on the roof or in the yard.Do you get your TV signals from a local TV station over the air, through a local cable company wire, or from your own small satellite dish at your home or apartment? What do you think the differences might be in these three ways to receive TV?Pause for discussion, then Click to continue

    General Tour

  • Ok. Now you know more about what TV is and how it gets to your home.

Its time to go inside the TV station and see what makes TV happen. Then we will meet some of the people who work in TV every day of the year.

(There are no holidays where the company closes in television or radio. Thats rightCan you think of a single day when you turn your TV on and theres nothing there?)

  • Introduction The first thing we see when we arrive at Channel 4 is the large, modern building.

WJXT is called Channel 4 because to tune in the station you select number 4 on the TV set. (On local cable in Jacksonville, you would select channel 3).

Inside TV4 it is very busy with many different departments and many highly skilled employees. The outside of WJXT TV 4 in Jacksonville, Florida.
