Outline By completing this unit you will understand

1. how existing film and TV media products relate to each other, 2. how we can begin to analyse them based on their purpose, genre, audience and meaning3. how to compare the production processes of different videos

You will also learn practical video production skills, and will be able to 1. plan for the production of a short film by creating scripts, storyboards etc… 2. managing your time independently and professionally 3. producing footage on location or in the studio, using video camera technology 4. editing your own footage together and exporting your final video.

Film & TV analysisOutline:You have been asked to write an analysis of 2 different videos; 1) the feature film District 9 & 2) Made In Chelsea or Suburgatory. You will need to break down the different elements of each, using examples from each video to highlight your points, and then compare the 2.

For each video explain the following

What is its purpose of the video & what makes you think this? Can a video have more than 1 purpose?o Eg/ to entertain, inform, educate, promote

What are the individual elements the director has used to create the videos (its content)o What is the videos narrative or concept. o What is the videos denotation? What are the videos connotations? Why have they done this?o How have they used props, costumes, the set & the cast to create a sense of place & time for their

audience? o How have they used cinematography to create meaning for their audience?

What different camera shots / angles / movement has the director used, and why have they chosen these?

How has the director used lighting to create mood and meaning?o How have they edited the video together, and why do you think that is? Does it have fast pacing at

particular times, and why do you think this is?o What different types of sound have they used, and why have they chosen these?o Does the film use special effects? Why have they chosen to use, or not use, special effects? Does the

video need special effects?

o What different things in the shot (mise-en-scene) convey a sense of time, place and story? Analyse 2 different shots from each film and identify how the mise-en-scene conveys a sense of time, place and the story/meaning.

Pre-productionOutline:You have been commissioned to produce either A) a 2 – 4 minute short film for a new horror-only VOD service, or B) a 2 – 4 minute short film for a new drama/thriller VOD service. Working in small groups of no more than 2 people you will need to complete pre-production for your idea. You will need to come up with an original idea for a horror film, working independently and to professional standards. You will need to manage your time and distractions, and keep a detailed record of what each of you have done during pre-production, undertaking logistical and creative planning for your video.

You will need to plan and produce the following documents at a minimum: Pre-production checklist Production milestones Production schedules Detailed brainstorms Proposal Storyboards Script Location scout Crew list Equipment list & booking forms

What am I being marked on?

Production & EditOutline:Now that your planning is done you will need to commence production, filming on location with your actors, before editing together the raw footage in Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro 7.

You will need to film to a high technical standard, using techniques to good effect to create and enhance meaning in your horror short. You will use cameras and sound recording tech with confidence and precision, acting professionally at all times.

After you have wrapped production you will both need to complete an individual edit of your film, working independently and to high professional expectations. Your final edit will need to be of a high technical quality and the pace will need to be appropriate to your narrative.

You will need to keep a detailed production diary explaining what you’ve done on a week-by-week basis, and complete a “planning to edit” sheet.
