    Tutorial CACTI (Ubuntu Server 14.04)

Youve got a couple servers that you want to monitor using a graphical representation. There are a few options

but my favourite is Cacti, its pretty straight-forward to work with and most changes can be done on the admin

    section of the web interface.

So installing Cacti on buntu !".#" $TS. %t should be pretty much the same on &ebian 'hee(y so you could

    probably use that too.

)irst the prere*uisites need to be installed+

    lyle@cacti:~$ sudo apt-get update

    lyle@cacti:~$ sudo apt-get install apache2 php5 php5-mysql php5-snmp mysql-client mysql-

    server snmpd rrdtool

This will be the password for your yS$ root user so please use a password that you will remember.

n the ne/t screen you will be asked to confirm the password. &o so.

nce you do that the installation will continue, most of the manual configuration has been take out of the wholeinstallation process. 0ow we install the actual cacti package.

    lyle@cacti:~$ sudo apt-get install cacti cacti-spine

0ow there will be some more graphical configuration re*uired+

1ust select 2 here and move on. 0e/t it will ask you for a webserver to use, well be using 3pache4 since that

what we installed in the prere*uisites.

Type in the username and password, then you will be prompted to change the password. ake it anything thatyou will remember.

%n about 9 minutes youll see your first graphs start populating under the graphs tab after you login.

This is the basic setup, once you intend to monitor more servers you will need to install the S0: daemon onthose servers and make sure that the rocommunity is set to anything youd like, % use public ;ust to make things

    easier.

n a server that you wish to add do the following+

    root@vdc-app01:~ echo !rocommunity pu"lic! # /etc/snmp/snmpd.con

Then restart the snmpd service on that bo/ so that the changes can take effect.

    root@vdc-app01:~ /etc/init.d/snmpd restart

nce that is done you will need to add the new bo/ as a device on your Cacti web interface. % wont go into much

detail with that in this post, but heres a *uick walk-through. Click the console tab -< on the left click &evices -
