When I was told the time for production for our next issue was

fast approaching I just knew with all my planning strategizing and

executions the time to pen down my Editorrsquos Intro too was nigh Oh

yes I have a huge flare for writing but then when I picked up my pen

the words wouldnrsquot just come through and I felt ldquoOh Anslem You mean

you canrsquot write just an intro anymore againrdquo I tried all my inspiration-

writing strategies but none seemed to work and then I looked through

my music playlist and my eyes caught ldquoBIBANKE by ASArdquo and that was

what I needed to force the words through but yet the words got stuck

at a point and I was back to point zero

Even though I hate being distracted when working a call came through

from my partner and after discussing our plans for this particular issue

it then dawned on me that she actually had fulfilled her part and I just

had to come through from my end

That alone gave me the motivation to run through and I smiled giving

God thanks for making me have such a wonderful partner

I want to say a big thank you to all our supporters readers fans and

brands for constantly believing in our dream of celebrating Nigerian

youths This issue 7 as usual is a more improved version of our last

issue with more pages covering fashion events technology sports

WHAT THE SPINLET APP IS ALL ABOUT

INVADING NIGERIArsquoS DIGITAL MARKETComing into a market where the

broadband is relatively slow and cost

of data is on the high side poses a

serious challenge to Spinlet But despite

this setback Spinlet has been making

efforts as regards the cost of internet

hence their plan to partner with mobile

networks to reduce the data cost One

of such partnerships is that of Etisalat-

Spinlet partnership which allows Etisalat

userssubscribers to get a certain

percentage off their charge when they

subscribe to use the Spinlet App

Spinlet has also partnered with some

mobile phone manufacturers like

Samsung and Tecno to provide pre-

installed Spinlet Apps all these in a

view to distribute and market local music

When Spinlet came into Nigeria in 2011

they discovered that a whole lot of

artistes and label houses were skeptical

about sole distribution and monetization

of intellectual properties One of the

many ways they got through to these

artistes amp label houses was by partnering

with Industry Nite This partnership

ensured that all artistes who performed

on the Industry Nite platform signed

on for Spinlet services Also Spinlet

partnered with FELABERATION 2011 and

for every artiste that performed during

the 67-day event a contract was signed

quarter of African music lovers

PAYMENT METHODOne important aspect of Spinlet services

is the ability to create a monetizing

platform for signed up artistes Just like

Mark says ldquoItrsquos not just about putting the

song on Spinlet itrsquos about utilizing the

entire available services on its platform

and one important feature is the ability

to create revenue for all Spinlet signed-

on artistesrdquo He further says rdquoWe do

understand that a whole lot of resources

are being invested into a song before its

eventually released and mostly the only

source of returns for an artiste is through

endorsements and shows thus creating

another source of revenue generation for

the artiste by releasing their materials is

Born into a Christian family and being

the first son out of five boys KIN

developed love for music at a tender

age of seven (7) playing instruments

in church most especially the drums

After his primary education and

secondary education where he attended

hen I was given this subject matter ldquoThe New Nollywoodrdquo I pondered for a bit and I was a little bemused Not because I knew I had to do a lot of research on this topic

or because I was confused as a french man in an English speaking country No It is because the contrast that exist between the Old Nollywood and the New Nollywood is Yay large it is almost like a different civilisation period entirely The New Nollywood isrdquoThat Ghen-Ghen Industryrdquo the most thrilling thing about this new movie industry is the fact that we have musicians delving into this field

Growing up I saw the likes of Richard Mofe Damijo on my screen and the Jason Statham of Nollywood Sam Dede (love him) I think the most amazing thing about Sam Dedersquos acting skills is the mere fact that he never ever cracked a smilehe was so badass the way he handled his roles like it was a very serious and real life matter I watch New Nollywood movies and the one actor that reminds me of Sam Dede is Desmond Elliot You might not see the similarities yet but let me help you the height the skin tones the seriousness in their given roles You wonrsquot see a movie preview of Sam Dede and in it he will be a security man or a beggar on the street (no prejudice to other qualified actors) same goes for Desmond Elliot

Most major brands like GLO have also shown a great support for the New Nollywood in the world famous movie Jenifa 2 yoursquoll see many GLOBACOM NG adverts and reference to this brand The revolution of Nollywood is so amazing Guess what This industry deserves more credit than it is given at the moment The likes of Mrs Omotola Jalade Ekende and Genevieve Nnaji are doing amazing things for this industry globally I saw Omotola at a conference with world leaders Proud yet I even read that she made Forbes top 100 most influential list Yes Forbes the same Forbes Jay Z and Oprah have been featured on So please donrsquot tell me yoursquore fed up or embarrassed by the New Nollywood This is one good industry in Nigeria It also ranks as the second movie making industry in the world Oprah Winfrey made comparisons of our very own

Genevieve Nnaji with the beautiful Julia Roberts The fact that Oprah knows Genevieve Nnaji means we are doing something right Nollywood might not have great producers like Quentine Tarrantino but we have our great and notable ones We have the likes of Uche Jombo who is a prolific movie actress turned producer she has eleven movies she has produced and still waxing strong I look forward to watching any movie her name is in Onwards and Upwards I say

The New Nollywood Their growth and development will not be complete if I donrsquot mention our notable cinema houses Over the past years Nollywood movies have been included in our Filmhouses one of the first movies I saw in a Nigerian cinema was lsquoThe Figurinersquo by the great and noble Kunle Afolayan The picture quality was impressive The eloquence and articulate drama by Funlola Aofiyebi The ever graceful Omoni Oboli Sigh That was a good movie Maybe the New Nollywood isnrsquot as notable and profound as the one our parents grew up watching but this New Nollywood is leaving their footprints in the sand of time I donrsquot know about you but with each movie preview I see growth and development It might not be to your individual satisfaction cause we have high standards cause wersquore used to Hollywood movies and we expect that Nollywood should emulate their counterparts Let me tell you something We will get there New Nollywood is the era for great changes We will make notable movies that will be worthy of international awards and accolades Timing just wait and see in time Nollywood will overcome your expectations Till then support your own patronize our actors build them up constructively

Scheduling an interview with a producer

is one sure feat to achieve you must

definitely keep to schedule as most of

them always have their time busy [At

least the serious ones]

My interview with SARZ was scheduled

for 200 pm and because of my experience

with Lagos traffic I set out quite early

getting to the studio [I couldnrsquot get him

out to conduct the interview elsewhere]

On my arrival I met a calm young man

trying to perfect an already ear-pleasant

beat

In the last three years the name SARZ

has grown exponentially to becoming

relevant when it comes to music

production in Nigeria

Born Osaretin Osabuohein this Lagos

born and bred young dude who is from

Edo state sojournrsquos into the world of music

production started when a friend of his

introduced him to an audio production

software to play around with of which he

did come out with an awesome beat that

he had to sell his first ever made beat

Prior to that SARZ has always had a flare

for music production which made him

remembers the beat to any song even as

a little boy Horning his skills better he

was able to work on one of Lord of Ajasarsquos

project and with that he got connected

with a whole lot of music artistes from

Ruggedman Shank to Jahbless Dagrin

and many more

Not relenting on his hustle he produced

the beat to Dagrinrsquos Kondo which got

him fully introduced into the Nigeria

Music Industry as a very talented music

producer The ripple effect that followed

amazed this young individual and that

has been his driving force ever since

Another of SARZrsquos motivation is getting

inspiration from WIZKID who he proudly

boasts has been one of the few artistes

that can comfortable flow on his beats

in his words ldquoAs an artiste if you donrsquot

come correct you canrsquot work with my beat

and thatrsquos because there is a whole lot of

stuffs running through my head when am

making a beat and I tend to create it so I

apparently need a compactable artiste to

Recognizing his effort in 2012 Don

Jazzy handed over to him the award for

producer of the year and to him that was

such a great accolade to receive from a

personality like Don Jazzy Also in 2013

NIKE announced SARZ as their brand

ambassador and he is hoping to achieve

found his calling in music and mixing

INTRODUCTIONEARLY BEGINNING

DJ OBI was born in the mid 80rsquos

Christened Obinna Ajuonuma he is son

to Dr Levi Ajuonuma one of Nigeria

respected presenter in the broadcasting

industry (Open House Party on Raypower)

although he later branched into oil and

gas and grew to becoming Group General

Manager Public Affairs Division of Nigeria

National Petroleum Corporation

Obinna as a little child had his Nursery

and Primary education in Nigeria and

then moved to Rainbow College also

in Nigeria before moving outside the

country to study Broadcasting and

Communication in Connecticut School of

Broadcasting

LEAVING NIGERIA A STUDENT RETURNING A DJ

While Obinna was still in Nigeria he had

always tagged along with his father to

the Raypower Studios every Saturday

where his father hosted the Open House

Party right from when he was a kid young

Obinna has always learnt from watching

other people and for him watching DJ

Jimmy Jatt and DJ FX2 playing in the

studio sub-consciously made him learnt

DJing informally

Moving out of Nigeria for his tertiary

education his passion became his

second source of making more aside

his allowances he got from home With

support from his father he got his first

set of DJ equipment and with practice

he became an option for birthday parties

and gigs around campus

His planned return to Nigeria fully was

scheduled for December 2012 but due

to the ill-fated Dana Air crash which had

on board his father he came back early

in June and being the eldest son with

responsibilities he stayed back ever since

to continue his trade as DJ

DJ OBIKeep calm DJ Obi got this


When Obinna was leaving Nigeria the

Nigeria entertainment industry was

just forming and that also gave him an

insight of what Nigeria music industry

was at that time Coming back at a

time when the industry can be termed

lsquoexplosiversquo DJ OBI is boastful he was here

from the onset

FROM HOUSE PARTIES TO BECOMING SYNDIK8 RECORDS OFFICIAL DJ

When DJ OBI kick started his DJing

career he started with house parties and

birthday gigs as that was the best way

he felt he could perfected his DJing skills

His first ever experience was however

not funny as his speaker blew at his first

ever house party Not deterred he kept

on the hustle and became a go-to DJ for

most Nigeria A-list artistes when they

came into the United States for gigs

He also worked with show promoters

as well and was able to open for Lupe

Fiasco at an event which to him was his

first and major breakthrough for a new

DJ like him During all these grinds he

met Naeto C MI Lynxxx DJ Neptune DJ

Humility and a couple of other artistes

that came into the states

Coming back to Nigeria he pitched his

tent with SYNDIK8 Records although he

has all along been under his owned self

in him becoming a DJ From following him to the studio and

it once when he worked in a bank in the US but the zeal wasnrsquot

One distinctive feature of DJ OBI is that he plays with no

headphones on While in the states his signature outfit was

usually a corporate suit while playing but coming to Nigeria

where the weather is quite hot he opted to wearing T-Shirts and

hats [All branded in DJ OBIrsquos name]

CHALLENGES SO FAR

Though born with a silver spoon DJ OBI still has his own

fair share of challenges with the death of his father more

responsibilities became rested on his shoulders and to keep

surviving his career needed all the push it can get by playing

at more gigs

Exclusively he mentioned most show organizerspromoters

always look out for so many factors before selecting as to which

DJ would best suit them of such factors he mentioned being a

radio DJ has always popped up and has limited him to playing

at some functions Why then not take up a job as a radio DJ

since that would further add to his profile and keep more jobs

coming He did say he has gotten offers but he wants a platform

where as a radio DJ he gets to interact with listeners not as an

OAP but as a DJ quite an ambitious concept you say

Coming back to Nigeria he pitched his tent with SYNDIK8

FROM UNIVERSITY GRADUATE TO BECOMING A MTV BASE VJ

Ehiz as he now generally called went to University of Benin to study Mechanical Engineering but due to some certain reasons he left in 2008 and completed his tertiary education at Lead City University graduating with a BSc in Computer science Being the

last child of his parents no particular pressure was placed on him as he was sourcing for jobs here and there On a particular day after watching the VJ Search advert on TV his Mum sat with him and advised him into participating knowing full well her son is quite an ldquointelligent talkativerdquo yet he was reluctant into participating until his Mummy got him the form and that made him have no other option than to go for it not knowing that was the beginning of a new career for him

In January 2013 with a panelist that included MI Tim Harwood and Funke Akindele Ehizojia ldquoEHIZrdquo Okoeguale was announced winner of the VJ


search competition which sees him joining other MTV Base in-house VJs such as Nomuzi and Sizwe Dhlomo from MTV Base SA

Mother never had a sober moment after my sisters left and one day three years later I came home to find her lifeless body in the living room limp left hand still clutching a half-empty bottle It then dawned on me I was utterly alone I was all I had nowI hated myself and I hated life I hated my father for leaving and I hated my mother for giving up on life Mostly I hated God for dumping me in this cruel world My life in Asaba became a nightmare I could not bring myself to go back to my usual routine I decided to sell our few valuables and move to Lagos

By the time I was twenty-three with almost all my savings used up I had finished from a catering school in Lagos and was employed at a big restaurant as a cookwaitress I lived in a one-room apartment with three other girls with whom I split the rent I had made a few friends and had a somewhat regular life I wasnrsquot happy and I didnrsquot have loads of boyfriends like the other girls but at least I was eating and I was alive

I couldnrsquot quite grasp the meaning of the word No one had ever said they loved me I had never loved anybody I had no idea what it meant to love or what it felt like to be loved I had absolutely no idea how to keep this love Love was alien to me I was determined however to accept this love and hold on to it with my life

I had no family so there was never an official wedding I met Xavierrsquos family twice and then moved into his two-room flat He didnrsquot even buy me a wedding band

Soon after I moved in I began to notice some changes in Xavier He had always been jealous and possessive but it was amplified when I moved into his home I wasnrsquot allowed to visit friends or go out at all except to work He showed up at my place of work randomly several times and demanded I followed him home immediately

I soon lost that job

Xavier didnrsquot allow me look for another job He wanted me home permanently He would hurl insults at me all day telling me how ugly and unlovable I was and how no body else could love me I believed him And so I endured the emotional abuse believing that no one else could love me Heck I didnrsquot even love myself Xavier would blame everything that went wrong in our lives on me He said I had my mother and her mother before herrsquos bad luck I agreed

He loved me he couldnrsquot be wrong

One year passed and he only got worse I would stay two months and not see any other human except Xavier and the woman who brought us market supplies once weekly I felt very alone More alone than I had felt when my sisters were taken from me Even more alone than I had felt when I happened upon my motherrsquos lifeless body reeking of alcohol

One certain day Xavier instructed me to cook jollof rice for him When it was ready I served him in the living room He took one look at the food and pushed it away with his hand sending it flying across the room I jerked back shocked and confused

ldquoYou stupid fool I said rice and stew Are you now deafrdquo Xavier spat out

Already in tears I stammered ldquoBut but I asked you twice and you said jollofrdquo

ldquoOh Irsquom now a liar Or a fool like you Me with my university degree yoursquore calling me stupid You illiteraterdquo

I started sobbing loudly

ldquoIf you know how ugly you look when crying you will shut your mouth Clean this mess and make me rice and stew immediatelyrdquo he said waving dismissively

Two days later our market supplies were brought by a strange woman She said that our normal employee was indisposed hence she was helping As I walked her to the gate she turned to me and spokeldquoIrsquom very sorry if this sounds too direct but are you okay You look pale and there is a certain unhappiness about yourdquo

ldquoIrsquom fine thank you mardquo I replied quietly all the while screaming for help on the inside

With that she walked out the door and left me pondering over her words Church I hadnrsquot gone to church since I was nine

Two weeks and a great deal of thinking later I decided to sneak to church I just needed to target a time when Xavier was at work and return before he was back There was a big church two streets away from mine I could walk there in less than five minutes

I sat at the last row and stared at everybody and everything going on I felt like an unwelcomed stranger The people there were very friendly and all smiling I wasnrsquot used to such hospitality I felt painfully self conscious and resisted the urge to bolt more than once It was a weekday service and lasted about two hours

I walked back home as fast as my legs could carry me I had a bad feeling in my chest When I got into the compound I knew why Xavierrsquos car was parked there I started crying I walked into the house and met him standing at the door I cried harder



ldquoYou whore So this is what you do everyday you cheap prostituterdquo he yelled

I had just started to explain myself when I felt a blow to my face that sent me flying across the room I saw red Xavier walked over to me and slapped me twice spat on me and walked out of the house I heard him drive away

Well that was it for me Above every other thing I had vowed never to become my mother And it dawned on me that slowly I had become herIn that moment I saw flashes of my father kicking my mum in her stomach while she lay doubled over on the ground my sisters and I crying in a corner I saw flashes of my father calling my mother all sorts of names while we looked on helplessly I saw flashes of my father telling my sisters and I that we were females hence we were useless and worthless and would never amount to anything Flashes of all the times we went to bed with empty stomachs silently vowing not to end up like our mother And in that moment I realized that I had failed

I picked myself up and didnrsquot even stop to clean the blood on my lips I ran into my room still crying hysterically I stuffed clothes into a box and ran out of the house like a mad woman Or like a woman being chased Actually I was being chased by the fear of becoming a woman I hated

I ran into the street still crying and bleeding People stared at me but I didnrsquot care I kept running I didnrsquot know where I was going until I got there

The church

My life up until I met Jesus was a long and weary journey but the destination was worth it The church took me in accommodated me treated my wounds gave me a job and led me to Christ In Him I found true love and a new life In Christ I truly understood the meaning of love

- Love is patient love is kind

I learned that true love begins with me and if I didnrsquot love myself nobody could love me enough I began to see my beauty my intelligence I could finally hear my own voice and speak up give opinions I knew no fear I was a new woman in Christ and this woman could not be abused

- It does not dishonor others it is not self-seeking it is not easily angered it keeps no record of wrongs

More importantly I forgave I forgave my father for damaging ourmdashmy mother my sisters and mersquosmdashlives and walking out on us afterwards I forgave my mother for seeking solace in the bottle I forgave both parents for not teaching us about Christ and his love for humanity I forgave my grandmother and aunt for separating me from my family I forgave Xavier for taking advantage of my insecurities I let go of all the hurt pain and sadness I kept inside of me for twenty-five years And it felt good I felt a lightness in my chest I felt free the burden of hatred was gone My escape had become my freedom

I focused all my energy on rebuilding myself spiritually physically and emotionally

Two years later I met him Ure My husband My joy I met the man who truly loves and cares about me The man who took the time to learn every detail about me and understand all my intricacies and complexities The man who loves respects and honors me The man who is proud of me and wants to show me off to the world The man who married me in church with God as our witness promising to love and to cherish in sickness and in health till death do us part The man with whom I bore children and created a family an amazing family A man Irsquom sharing my new life with A man God sent to me

- Love always protects always trusts always hopes always perseveres

I never heard from my sisters again but everyday I pray that theyrsquove learned how to love and overcome the disaster that was our childhood

or a couple months now Irsquove been trying to come to terms with the recent craze for twitter trends amongst Nigerian artistes especially the emerging artistes Way back in 2010 when twitter

got popular amongst us twitter trends use to be a ldquoREALrdquo thing It took over 500 - 1000 tweets to make a topic or a word trend

Sometime in 2012 Nigerians turned it into a mess It became an ldquoinrdquo thing for the likes of Tweet Oracle and Don Baba J to trend a topic everyday due to their large number of followers Well we all thought it was fun not until the parody accounts came flooding into our timelines They desecrated the ideology of twitter trends and that was all it took to loose its glory

I remember the first time I had to make a clientrsquos song trend on demand in September 2012 it was amongst the first of its kind I wouldnrsquot want to mention names but we did trend the song title and sent out mails to our bloggers and music critiques but what we got in return was never bargained for Not only did the song title trend in Lagos and Nigeria for three (3) days the song was on every music portalblogwebsite that existed back then from key websites down to ldquoblogspotcomsrdquo Mind you my

client was an upcoming artiste and you can guess what I did the ldquotrendersrdquo were made to tweet links of the song for a whole week after the trendrelease date

Now that was the idea To make a song trend enough to disturb the online community just so it can get anyonersquos attention enough to listen to the song But today itrsquos been made a mess Trending topics on twitter is a shadow of what it was meant to be thanks to the many ldquotrendersrdquo and unnecessary trends of course

Virtually every artiste (from major to emerging) wants to trend their names amp songs on twitter these days I understand the need for that Thatrsquos not a problem but how itrsquos done is a major determinant what the artiste gets in return Most of these accounts who trend topics practically flood your timeline enough to get you pissed I mean why would you ask questions like ldquoWhen last did you have sxrdquo and tag a song title to such a tweet Left to me Irsquod never check that song or video out especially when I donrsquot even know who the artiste is

People are often quite merciless in their inward scrutiny of

you trying hard in their mindrsquos eye to portray you in the worst

possible light and therefore believe to be better than you I am

well aware of this I have also come to realise that in order to

survive this scrutiny and more importantly in order to prevent

it from manifesting in the way they speak to you or behave

towards you you need to pay attention to how you present

yourself to people the most essential representation of you

being the way you dress The quality of your clothes your fashion

sense and your general carriage speak volumes But being

aware of all these and putting it to mind most of the time has

not helped me in living accordingly Yet I do not deceive myself

about who I truly am

My friends the few Irsquove got call me Nicole Irsquom the first of four

children born to unfortunate parents I am grossly underpaid

and very unhappy with my job but I know many out there will

grab what I have with both hands if given the opportunity so I

try not to complain I carry a reasonable amount of the family

responsibility on my young shoulders and therefore cannot

hard through it at the picture of elegance posed there I stare

at it and then stare at my reflection in comparison For shame I

would never dream of standing beside the elegant ones and risk

being despised by them even when I know thatrsquos hardly possible

Still it did not stop my day dreams I envied the mannequins

they have so many beautiful cloths that they hardly ever have to

repeat clothes Sometimes even I wished I were a mannequin

or had one as a friend and imagined that if she were nice shersquod

give me some of her clothes Now however I donrsquot worry about

the things I canrsquot afford I concentrate on those things that are

within my reach and Irsquom content with them no matter how little

Walking past the shops now entails staring at the new cloths on

display and working on new designs for my fashion ideas and

creating new patterns for my sewing

stock and cash purchase on Wednesday

27th of February a deal that marries his

social network of 12 billion active uses

with Whatsapprsquos 450 million users Asked

about the price tag during an on-stage

discussion at the February 24th-27th

mobile world congress in Barcelona

Spain Zuckerberg said Whatsapp was

attractive as a company by itself and

as a strategic fit with Facebook ldquoI just

think that by itself it is worth more than

$19 billionrdquo said Zuckerberg ldquoI mean

it is hard to exactly make the speech

today because they have so little revenue

compared to that numberrdquo he concluded

ldquo but the reality is that there are very few

services that reach a billion people in the

world They are all incredibly valuable

much more valuable than thatrdquo he added

Zuckerberg went further stressing hope

leave the Whatsapp service unchanged

That there will be no interferance from

Facebook to change Whatsapp from

what itrsquos originally known for ldquo whatsapp

doesnrsquot store the content we would be

pretty silly if we get in the way of thatrdquo

said Zuckerberg

Also the Whatsapp owner had said that

the service would launch free voice

calls by mid-year putting it on a par

with key competitor Viber which already

does so He also stressed that Facebook

did not plan to change Whatsapp that

Zuckerberg really understand that for

Whatsapp to be successful it really needs

to stay independent

It has been a deal done and dusted

and Whatsapp now a Facebook property

Zuckerberg who has been successful with

Facebook after its initial public offer in

may 2012 was oumln the downside then

it literally had no mobile advertising

revenues But by the end of 2013 mobile

devices accounted for 53 of Facebookrsquos

advertising revenue bringing in $12

billion in the last quarter and more

than $3 billion over the whole year

Heartbreaks are surely inevitable in relationships that were established for the wrong reasons Relationships where the partners involved are mere actors delivering their own scripts relationships born out of boredom relationships born out of peer or societal pressure or relationships established just for the single purpose of experimenting sexual acts

To cut the story short she eventually got married to this new guy and left my friend heartbroken My friend truly loved her and was hoping to get married to her It is without doubt that she was in the relationship pending on when shersquod find her desired dream man

Some male folks could pretend to be in love with a girl as long as their sexual desires amp appetites are satisfied They actually donrsquot love the girl yet keep her just for the single purpose of satisfying their lustful desires This type of relationship will only last as long as the man involved continues to pretend to love the woman

Another example which is common with the ladies is their ability to pretend to the core as long as they get benefits from their partners They fake their voices when answering calls and they sure know how to make a man believe they love him This type of relationship is just a timebomb waiting to explode

Many people engage into relationships just because their friends are in relationships or for the sake of satisfying their lustful desires Others are just there for the material benefits and this is common with the ladies A relationship based on any of the above reasons is a timebomb waiting to explode It might last as long as the partners involved continue to pretend depending on when they find a better substitute

In a case where a person is truly in love and their partner is pretending and acting his own script just to make believe the situation will only leave the one truly in love with severe heartbreaks amp emotional issues that can lead to depression and suicidal attempts
