Following the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the Haudenosaunee held a Grand Council to discuss the environmental degrada-tion of our communities. In accordance with the Great Law of Peace, the Grand Council passed and agreed, based on Haudenosaunee protocols and cultural beliefs, to establish the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force (HETF).

Cleaning products help maintain healthy conditions at home and work, by removing of dust, allergens, and infectious agents. But typical cleaning products present several health and environmental concerns. They often contain chemicals associated with eye, skin, or respiratory irritation, or other human health issues. Some concentrated cleaning products are classified as hazardous, creating potential handling, storage, and disposal issues for users.

Reducing the human health and environmental concerns is an important incentive for substituting green products for hazardous ones. Important considerations in choosing a “green” substitute include:

When purchasing cleaning products, the overall best

• biodegradability, • low toxicity, • low volatile organic compound (VOC) content, • reduced packaging, • low life cycle energy use

Distilled vinegar can be used to substitute almost every household cleaner. Even a small amount makes a difference:

• Remove stains from clothing by rubbing vinegar directly onto the stain before washing.

• A 50/50 mix of vinegar and water can be used for most surface cleaning in your home. Use more vinegar for tougher sufaces that require more cleaning.

Design for the Environment (DfE) The DfE program allows use of its logo on products that are made of safer chemicals. A DfE logo on a product means that the DfE scientific review team has screened each ingredient for potential human health and environmental effects and that the product contains only those ingredients that pose the least concern among chemicals in their class.

Canada’s Environmental Choice Program Includes a copy of the specifications for earning Environment Canada’s EcoLogo for industrial and commercial cleaners. Included are criteria for window cleaners, hard surface cleaners, floor care, and carpet and upholstery cleaners.

Unified Green Cleaning Alliance (UGCA) Supports the development and dissemination of sustainable cleaning formulations into industry and the marketplace.

Database of Environmental Information for Products and Services A searchable database of product-specific information (e.g., voluntary environmental standards and guidelines, regulations, and contract language) developed by government programs, both domestic and foreign, as well as third parties.

EPP’s Product and Services - Cleaning

Purchasers should examine as many relevant product attributes as possible, recognizing that

tradeoffs are inevitable. For example, one product may be made with renewable resources (a desirable characteristic), while another product has a lower VOC content (also a desirable characteristic). In any selection, the “greenest solution” is the healthiest solution both for the living and the environment. So make the move in “Going Green!” You may be surprised at just how much natural solutions can accomplish.

The idea of hosting a Winter Day Camp is to plant the seed of sustainability within our community’s young people using a variety of hands-on experiences. Traditional Environmental Knowledge (TEK), once commonly passed between generations as a way of life, is becoming a lost art. Members of the community and the Tuscarora Environment Program provided activities to build on TEK skills that students already possess. Over the course of four days, students were engaged in winter TEK activities.

By providing programs such as the Winter Day Camp, students will not only hone and pass on new skills, but continue to seek and learn more of our Traditional Environmental Knowledge, keeping our Haudenosaunee culture and traditions alive for the next seven generations.

The theory in which Native Americans arrived to the North

American continent by way of the Bering Strait 13,000 years ago

has since been obscured by recent discoveries dating inhabitance to the Americas 15,500 years ago. According to scientific studies, the Bering Strait at this time would have been impassible,

therefore placing large doubts into the common Bering Strait theory.

Needless to say, it is the Native American’s belief that they have

always been here.

Root beer was created by Native Americans long before it was reformed into the carbonated beverage we now recognize. It’s original recipe contained natural ingredients such as burdock and sassafras which were used for medicinal purposes to detox and purify the blood. These medicines can still be found at Tuscarora and are still used for medicinal purposes today.
