Dear Friends,

The Entrance Antiphon for this weekend’s Mass is from Psalm 86:

Turn your ear, O Lord, and answer me; save the servant who trusts in you, O God. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I cry to you

all the day long.

What a wonderful prayer for all of us during these days. We

cry out to the Lord and seek God’s ear – that the Lord would save us from all that might harm us, and bring us into his peace, mercy and blessing.

But we must do more than “cry out.” We are also called to DO what is right and just, to serve the Lord by serving one another, to love others as Jesus com-mands us to do.

Let us pray for the grace of the Holy Spirit to give us the courage and help we need to live our Faith, to act upon it, to witness to one another the goodness and love of God that is within us.

May the grace and peace of the Lord be with you! Father Fred

TRUST Keys hold great significance for those who carry them. They represent the trust and authori-ty of the owner when given to another person. We may give our house key to a trusted friend to take care of our mat-ters while we are away. We may give keys to someone responsible for maintaining or working in a particular building. Keys to vehicles are given to people who have proven themselves re-sponsible drivers. The readings today focus on this kind of trust—the trust that conveys authority and re-sponsibility. In the first reading, the symbol is specifi-cally that of a key; but the second reading and the Gospel also speak of trust and leadership as they refer to the earthly church that Jesus established. Registration for Faith Formation and Youth Ministry began August 15. Please go to our parish website for the forms. Look on the Home Page or under individual ministries. Also, now there is a possibility for a univer-sal payment for all the programs to be paid at one time, which should make payment easier for all families. We are most grateful to the teens and adults who responded to the Flocknote message sent on Sunday, August 9, asking for volunteers. We really need the help to create a dynamic non-traditional program for our young people who will be “over-Zoomed” from just their school day. You can still volunteer! just go to our website Home page and look for Volunteer Opportunities. Just a reminder that most of us are working from home so email or response to Flocknote are the best ways to communicate. Our phones do now forward to our email addresses. Thanks for your patience and under-standing with this. We are aware that we still have not had all our 2019-2020 students receive their first communion. That will be the top priority when we can assemble for Mass again as a community or even with only family. Please continue to pray that this disease will get under control. **Check our video to hear about the programs that will be offered this year. Fr. Fred sent it out on Sun-day; hopefully, you got it.

THE TRUE MEASURE When I die, God won’t measure my head to see how clever I was. God will measure my heart to see how loving I was. —Anonymous

Prayer to St. Monica, Patroness of Mothers

Blessed Monica, mother of St. Augustine, we give thanks to our Father in Heaven Who looked with mercy upon your tears over your wayward son. His conversion and heroic sanctification were the fruit of your prayers. Dear St. Monica, we now ask you to pray with us for all those sons and daughters that have wandered away from God, and to add your prayers to those of all mothers who are worried over their children. Pray also for us that, following your example, we may, in the company of our children, one day enjoy the eternal vision of our Father in Heaven. Amen. (catholicdoorscom)

SAINT MONICA (332-387) Feast Day: August 27

She had smiles for the neighbors, though her husband found her religion and the charity it inspired annoy-ing. She made tearful prayers in private for a son, outwardly self-assured but, as his mother knew, in-wardly restless, and whose girlfriend of a dozen years had borne his child out of wedlock. Though not the first or last such mother and son, Monica and Au-gustine are the Church’s most famous, so we keep their feast days back to back, with Monica’s, fittingly, first. To Rome she followed Augustine, then to Milan, where years of prayer—and nagging—finally bore fruit in his conversion by Saint Ambrose. For six months, moth-er and son enjoyed the blessing of rediscovering each other. Just in time! On the way home to North Africa, Monica took sick and died near Rome. No child who has mourned a parent can read, unmoved, Augustine’s tender account, in his Confessions, of Monica’s last days. At this time of the year, when parents watch apprehensively as children leave for school, may Monica’s perseverance and Augustine’s long-prayed-for conversion ease anxiety and kindle hope. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. NOT HIRED, BUT CHOSEN

When a company is recruiting for a top management position, the process is detailed and thor-ough, with many interviews for each candidate and a full re-view of educational back-ground, professional credentials, references, previous experience, and more. No com-pany wants to take a chance on a person who is any-thing other than the best available. Contrast this with today’s Gospel account. Jesus first questions his disci-ples. Who do people say Jesus is? They give him sev-eral answers. Then he asks them who they say he is. It is impulsive, big-hearted Peter who exclaims, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Think of Peter for a moment: a good Jew, but almost certainly illiterate and a fisherman by trade. Not exactly high up in the social order, is he? Never-theless, Jesus saw not only what Peter was, but what he could become. He saw into the heart and mind of this man and said, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). Jesus was not without humor, as this was a play on words. The name Peter comes from the Greek word for rock (petros). The beginning of our Church, which today embraces one and a half billion people worldwide, lay in the hands of this one man and his fellow disciples. With the authority of God and the power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Jesus promised that ultimate evil would never prevail against it. Nevertheless, the Church is made up of flawed human beings who sometimes fail as followers of Jesus. We must never forget that even Peter himself, after Jesus chose him as “the rock,” failed spectacularly by denying his Lord three times. When we fail, we should not walk away but strive even more to live a faithful Christian life.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
