WATCH THE VIDEO OLD TOWN, BUT PRETTY FUNKYTurku, a pearl of the Baltic, is Finland’s number one summer destination. Bisecting Turku city centre, the river Aura flows through the most beautiful cityscape; past great restaurants, cafes bursting with atmosphere, perceptive works of city art
as well as fascinating museums. The mouth of the river opens out to meet the tens of thousands of islands known as the Scandinavian Islands. The most numerous archi-pelago in the world stretches all the way from Turku to Åland and onto Stockholm.
Turku has a long tradition as a port; Hansa ships sailed the Aurajoki River already back in the Middle Ages. Today Turku welcomes cruise ships from around the world. We have a wide variety of tour options to support cruise line revenue, but we also recognize that some guests want to do their own thing. Wheather passangers or crew, the city of Turku looks forward offering you a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Turku is a particularly fitting cruise destination – it is, after all, the place where the world’s largest cruise ships are built. Turku will get a taste of the charm of old ships in the summer of 2017 when the historic Tall Ships’ Races arrives for the fifth year, bringing dozens of events and hundreds of thousands of visitors.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT TURKU CITY. Turku is Finland’s oldest city and one of the oldest in the entire Nordic region. The year 1229 was of great significance to the city. It was during this year that the seat of the Archbishop of Finland moved to Turku and it became the religious centre as well as an important town of commerce.
NUMBERS. The construction of Turku Castle began in the 1280s, and Turku Cathedral was consecrated in the year 1300. The university was founded in 1640, and Turku was the Finnish capital until the year 1812. In 2011, Turku went global as the European Capital of Culture.
NAMES. Turku’s most famous people, such as Lutheran reformer Mikael Agricola, the Flying Finn and winner of nine Olympic Gold running medlas Paavo Nurmi, the astronomer Yrjö Väisälä, rock star Michael Monroe – formerly of Hanoi Rocks, and the hockey playing broth-ers, Saku and Mikko Koivu, have not only changed Fin-land but also the world. The vibrant economy of Turku has delivered the world’s largest luxury cruise ships, the Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas, completed in Turku in 2009 and 2010. The cruise ship order-book is good for up to 5 years in advance.
PEOPLE. Turku has more than 180,000 inhabitants and 30,000 students in higher education. Natives from Turku typically speak Finnish (83 %) or Swedish (6 %). Tour-ists will find it easy in Turku as most people speak English very well.

Scandinavia’s archipelago starts just off Turku’s coast in Finland’s southwest and stretches all the way to Stockholm. The archipelago, which has been called the world’s most beautiful, includes 40,000 islands and reefs. It is the biggest archipelago in the world by the number of islands, and a phenomenal natural sight, the beauty of which comes across even when viewed from the deck of a large cruise ship.
