2010 marks the 30th anniversary of my first-ever guiding of a tour group in Turkey. Back in 1980, I was a graduate fresh from the university with a degree in archeology. When my passion in history and archeology combined with

my interest in travel, I found myself leading tours all over Turkey as a licensed tour guide. I took many groups on an exploration throughout this magical land full of history for a few years before starting my own tour company in Istanbul. FLO USA was born out of my passion to bring history to life, on the very spot it was made, by organizing expert- led cultural tours.

2010 sees us breaking new ground. We have added new destinations -- Jordan and Israel -- to our existing destinations: Turkey, Greece, Egypt and China. This year we also offer Greek Island cruises combined with land tours.

As always, we go the extra mile to provide the best service to our fellow travelers. Our expert team members in our US office will customize itineraries to your needs and can answer all your questions.

We look forward to helping you with your travel plans and welcoming you to Turkey, as well as Greece, Egypt, China, Jordan and Israel!

Cengiz ArasPresident

Attention to detailWe offer a select number of escorted cultural tours. All have been carefully researched and meticulously planned.

The Personal TouchExpert archaeologists personally design all our tours. We strive for the very best in personal service, and can assure you of individual care and attention. As a previous traveler told us :"The hospitality was exceptional, we felt like guests rather than customers."

Small GroupsWe take only small groups of like-minded people – no more than 16 on our escorted tours – travelling in an easy-going, friendly, and informal style.

Value for MoneyApart from international flights, the price of our tours includes almost everything- even trip insurance. Our tours aren't cheap, but virtually all our customers have told us that they are great value for money- the old adage "you get what you pay for" is especially true when it comes to tours.

Experience & QualityWe have been organizing trips to Turkey since 1980. We aim to provide the very best led archeological tours in the country. We want you to travel with us again – as many of our customers do.

Unique DiningWhen you travel independently, dining is typically your biggest expense. When you travel with us, most meals are included. You will savor a delectable assortment of classic dishes and regional specialties, selecting directly from menus or perhaps enjoying the innumerable delights of a delicious buffet. Dear FLO USA,

Prior to writing this letter I started to search the thesaurus to find the perfect superlatives to describe the beauty and wonderful time we experienced during our visit to Turkey. Unfortunately, there are no words that can convey emotional feelings one gets as you travel throughout your beautiful country. Just when you think nothing can compare to the last site the next one is even more impressive. To give you some indication of our two week trip, Cynthia and I took over 2,000 pictures and four video tapes each 60 minutes. Trying to capture the essence of various ancient civilizations while trying to understand what life was like during those difficult times. While traversing the ruins we felt like we had just step out of a time machine and was taking a causal stroll down Main Street. What an amazing feeling to walk on stones worn down by the people and carts and to think of the hardships they had to endure. Our eyes were fixated on the unbelievable workmanship and trying to imagine the amount of effort it took to build these enormous cities of stone. To see the unique carved statues leaves a person breathless and wanting to see more. Even our excellent guide who has seen these sites many times before was in awe of such beauty.

Both Cynthia and I judge a country by the people. That is why we intentionally make a concerted effort to speak with them and try to better understand their customs, values and beliefs. We found the Turkish people to be compassionate, hard working and exceptionally friendly if you allow yourself to get to know them. If you go to Turkey with a poor attitude and expect everything to be handed to you or are not flexible in accepting unexpected changes then I say stay home. All these years we have had a preconceive description of Turkey based on the movie Midnight Express. We thought it was a third world country with dark and mysterious places and to be frank a dangerous place to visit. My co-worker who is from Turkey has been promoting his country from the time I first met him. It was by accident I came across FLO-USA . When we compare the value of what I experienced to that of what it cost, the trip was priceless. If Turkey is currently on your list of places to visit I suggest moving it up to the top. The expression, one of the best kept secrets fits Turkey to a T. But I would not wait because the word is already out and there has been a substantial increase in visitors. Our only regret is we wish we had visited Turkey sooner.

In conclusion, thank you Cengiz and your staff for everything. This trip will live forever in our memories. More importantly, it has changed our hearts and minds and now we know why your countrymen are so proud of coming from Turkey.

Testimonials

Dear FLO USA,

I want to take this opportunity to thank FLO USA for a truly wonder tour of Turkey. My wife and I had a schedule that did not lend itself to a pre-established tour. Instead, we booked a personalized excursion that was both delightful and educational. Our tour essentially started in Cappadocia, the cultural cross roads of Asia Minor. Our guide in this region, Ahmet, and driver, Yahshir ( forgive the spelling) were great company. They made it a point to tailor the tour to our interests, which in addition to the classic sites was to get to know the people of this wonderful region. We next went to Istanbul where Hakan, our guide and Sami, our driver, with skill and agility presented us a city that bustles like no other. The density of historical sites is unbelievable. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and the Grand Bazaar, to name a few, were breath-taking. Yet, to step out of my hotel and within a minute or two walk along the great wall of Constantinople was also a highlight to me. Just as in Cappadocia, the sights and smells were wonderful and the casual meal at Salyar, a small village on the Bosphorous, a culinary delight. We could not leave Turkey without seeing Ephesus. It was more beautiful than any picture I've seen. The house of the Virgin Mary was a solemn experience for my wife and me. There is no question that Turkey warrants a return trip and there is no question that we will use FLO USA again to coordinate it. Thank you Cengiz for a trip well-planned .

Dear FLO USA,I’m sure my mother will also be in touch, but I just wanted to let you know that both Erol and Bulat/Bill were absolutely fantastic guides in Istanbul and Kusadasi/Ephesus, respectively. Between them and your totally excellent service along the way, we couldn’t have been more pleased with our experience in Turkey. I can’t wait to go back! I’ll also be sure to recommend FLO USA to anyone I know who is thinking of going – you all are totally fantastic. Thanks again for all your help!Best regards,

EPHESUS

Ephesus, which was one of the twelve Ion

cities, developed as a result of the union

of Ionian immigrants and the natives

living near the temple of Kybele.

Afterwards, the spectacular temple, which

was built for this Goddess (who would

later assume the name of the Greek

Goddess Artemis), would become famous

through its recognition as one of the

Seven Wonders of the World. Like the

other Ionian cities, Ephesus was ruled by

Lydia, Persia, Macedonia and lastly by the

Roman rulers.

This city was one of the most popular

cities of the ancient world, and was given

a special attention by many Hellenistic

kings. For instance, it is known that

Lysimakhos built this city, and gave it his

wife Arsinoe's name, and that the king of

Pergamon Attalos II, enlarged the port.

Because the Romans made Ephesus the

capital of the Asian State, the city became

one of the biggest settlements in

Anatolia. The city was an important

centre for Christianity at this time.

Owing to its wonderful position and

associated ports, Ephesus became

Anatolia's most significant trading centre.

The Celsus library, a theatre, a stadium, a

gymnasium, temples and the famous baths

are responsible for this city becoming a

spor t s, r e l i g i ou s, cu l tu r a l an d

entertainment centre, especially in the

Roman times.

Turkey has so much to offer her visitors: breathtaking natural beauties,

unique historical and archeological sites, steadily improving hotel and

touristic infrastructure, a tradition of hospitality and competitive prices. It

is not surprising therefore that this country has recently become one of

the world's most popular tourism destinations.

Due to Turkey's diverse geography, one can experience four different

climates in any one day. The rectangular shaped country is washed on

three sides by three different seas. Its shores are laced with beaches, bays,

coves, ports, islands and peninsulas. The summers are long, lasting as long

as eight months in some areas. Turkey is also blessed with majestic

mountains and valleys, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and grottoes perfect for

winter and summer tourism and sports of all kinds.

ISTANBUL

Istanbul, which has a history of more than

2,500 years, Is situated on a peninsula

surrounded by the Marmara Sea, the

Bosphorus, and the Golden Horn.

Istanbul.

Istanbul is a holy city, where mosques,

churches and synagogues live side by side,

and even declare their fraternity. Istanbul is

also renowned for its palaces, mansions and

monumental buildings - each a unique

example of architectural styles that were

inherited from the Ottomans. Dolmabahce

Palace, Tophane Mosque, Galata Tower

(Christea Turris), built by the Genoese,

Sultanahmet Mosque, Ayasofya (Hagia

The history of Turkey tells of a 10,000 year-old civilization. Anatolia is a

melting pot where cultures from Sumer, Babylon and Assyria interacted for

centuries with peoples such as the Hattis, Hittites and Hourrites. The result was

a unique Anatolian civilization which has long inspired the thoughts and legends

of the West. The ancient Bronze Age witnessed the establishment of the first

independent city states. At that time, the center and southeast of Anatolia were

inhabited by the indigenous Hattis. The most spectacular findings from this time

are those of Alaca Hoyuk in the Kizilirmak region and of Horoztepe near Tokat,

in the Black Sea region. They are contemporary with the royal tombs of

Mycenae in Greece.

The era of Roman Empire is an essential chapter in the history of the region. In

330, Constantine, the Roman emperor, transferred his capital from Rome to

Roman Empire. Roman Empire, at that time a small city founded 1,000 years

earlier by Greeks on the shores of the Strait was henceforth called

Constantinople. The centre of the Empire thereafter became the Orient, in

particular Anatolia, inhabited by the descendants of Hattis, Hittites, Phrygians,

Greeks and others. Roman Empire became the Eastern Roman Empire; its

official religion was proclaimed to be Christianity in 380 and in 392 paganism

was banned. In 476, Rome collapsed and Constantinople remained the sole

capital of the empire. Roman Empire was both a state and a civilization, built

along the lines of the Roman state, the Greek culture and the Christian faith.

The emperor enjoyed divine power and relied heavily on the Church.

HIERAPOLIS

According to the legend that spread the

mystery of Hierapolis to the wide world, an

ugly shepherd girl, fed up with the burdens

of life, cast herself into water, but turned into

a beautiful maiden in the waters of

Hierapolis.

H i s tor y and nature meets in an

extraordinary manner at Pamukkale. The

name Hierapolis also means the sacred city. It

has the Necropolis, the Domitian Road and

gate, the temple of Plutonium set in a square

area, the theatre with reliefs depicting the

mythology of Apollo and Artemis, the

Frontinus street and Gate, the Agora, the

North Byzantine Gate, the South Byzantine

Gate, the Gymnasium, The Fountain with

Triton, the House with Ionic capitals, the

Apollo sacred site, the aqueducts and

Nympheum, the city walls, the Martyrium of

St. Phillip and bridge, the Column Church,

the ruins of Basilica and Roman Baths. These

are still standing in all their glory.

The Pamukkale travertine was created by

thermal water depositing the calcium

carbonate it contained. The natural wonder

of Pamukkale travertine deposits span a 160

meters tall and 2700 meters long cascade.

With its brilliant white color, it can be seen

about a distance of 20 km. At Pamukkale

there are 17 thermal springs with water

temperatures between 35-100-C.

Homer (Homeros) was born in Izmir on the west coast of Turkey and he depicted Troy, which is north of Izmir, in his Epic the Iliad. ?

Roman Empire knew its first golden age under Justinian. One thousand years of

Roman jurisprudence were gathered together in four volumes, a work which had

a lasting influence for many centuries. Justinian was also a great builder. The

Basilica of Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) (AD 532-7) was constructed during his

reign. The history of Roman Empire is one of alternating periods of glory and

decay, of religious dissent, of conflicts and wars with Persians, Arabs, Seljuks,

Ottomans and peoples of the North.

By the 13th century, Roman Empire was drawing her final breath. After the

mortal wound of 1204, when the Crusaders occupied Constantinople, sacked the

city, forced the emperor to leave and established a Latin kingdom, she was a

small state. Bulgaria declared her independence and a new maritime power,

Venice took for herself the whole Aegean complex of islands. In 1261, the

Byzantines had regained possession of their capital, but there were new threats.

TROY

The ancient city of Troy, famous as the site

of Trojan War that Homer described in his

epic poem The Iliad, was inscribed to the

UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.

With its four thousand year history, it is one

of the most famous archaeological sites of

the world. It is located on the lower slopes of

the Mount Ida of antiquity, within the

boundaries of Canakkale province.

First mention of Troy was made by Homer

in his epic poem The Iliad, where it is the

ancient site of the Trojan War.

According to the Trojan Legend, the sea

goddess Thetys and the titan of Atlantic Sea

Oceanus had a daughter called Electra.

Electra would become Zeus's wife and would

give birth to Dardanus. Dardanus would

found the city of Dardania. Dardanus's son

Tros died in the Turas lands, and Darnanus's

grandson llus founded the city of Troy. Close

by Mount Ida was the site of the infamous

beauty contest that gave rise to the Trojan

War. The three beauties of the contest were

Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, and the judge

was Paris. Paris chose Aphrodite, as

Aphrodite promised Paris the love of Helen

of Sparta, wife of king Menelaus. Paris

abducted Helen and took her to Troy,

provoking the war.

Troy is known to have 9 archaeological

layers, and, to date, house foundations,

theatres, a sewage system indicating quite

advanced technology, public bath houses, and

various artefacts have been found date in the

various layers.

The Nemrut mountainside with the tumulus containing the tomb of King

Antiochus of the Commagene Kingdom and several giant statues was inscribed

to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1987.

Nemrut Mountain is also known as the highest open-air museum in the world.

With its enchanting statues standing ten metres high, and meters long

inscriptions and the ancient Commagene sanctuary, it is situated in the Kahta

county of Adiyaman province.

Nemrut Mountain was one the most majestic place of worship in ancient

Anatolia. According to the inscriptions, Antiochus built a monumental tomb, a

tumulus of cut stones built over the tomb, and terraces along the three edges

of the tumulus.

Those terraces are known as the East, West and North Terraces. On the East

and West Terraces are giant statues, inscriptions and reliefs. Five statues depict

the gods, and, among the deities, the figure of Antiochus.

?Did you know that

Ishak Pasha Palace is more of a complex than a mere palace. It is the most famous of the palaces built in the decades shortly after the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. The palace, which was built on a hill at the side of a mountain 5 km east of Dogubeyazit District is the last large monumental structure of the Ottoman Empire in the "Lale Devri" (Tulip Period). It is one of the most distinguished and magnificent examples of the 18th century Ottoman architecture and is very valuable in terms of art history. According to the top of the door inscription at the Harem Section it was constructed in 1784 (1199 H. according to the Islamic calendar).

As the foundation rests on a valley slope, it is rocky and hard. Despite the fact that it is at the center of the Old Beyazit city, its three sides (north, west, south) are steep and sloped. There is a suitable flat area only to the east. The entrance of the palace is on that side. It is also its narrowest facade. As the palace was built in the age when castles ceased to be of use and fire arms were developed and abundantly available, its defense towards the hills in the east is weak. Its main gate is the weakest point in that respect. The structure of the main gate is no different than those seen in the palaces built in Istanbul and elsewhere in Anatolia and has neat stone workmanship and carving.

Hagia Sophia is considered a unique monument in world architecture, and it's magnificence and functionality has been a good example in construction of countless Ottoman mosques. Hagia Sophia with its exceptional history constitutes a synthesis between east and west. This monument is one of the wonders of the world that has remained intact until the present day. One can find many attractions in Hagia Sophia - interesting forms of Byzantine architecture, mosaics of the Christian period as well as structures added during the Ottoman era.

Hagia Sophia has been a Christian place of worship for 916 years, then converted into a mosque and served Muslims for 481 years. Hagia Sophia Museum was opened in 1935 and ever since it has been attracting thousands of visitors every year.
