Mysore seed cocoon production is animportant occupation in Kunigal talukof the district. Chikkanayakanahalli,Tiptur and Turuvekere taluks areBivoltine seed areas. V-1 and M-5 arepopular mulberry varieties grown in thedistrict.
Industry profile
Dominant fruits include Mango, Areca nut, banana and pomegranate. Common vegetables include tomato, onion, brinjal (eggplant), sweet flag, betel vine and tamarind. Jasmine, Chrysanthemum and Marigold are the flower crops which are grown.
Ragi and Groundnut are the majorcrops of the district. About 30 percentarea previously under cereals have beendiverted to oilseeds. Hybrids in Paddyare the ruling varieties in the district.Area under Maize is increasing everyyear.
Rice mills, Coir industries, Oil extraction mills are the major agro-based industries in the region. Owing to the expanding horticulture in the district, opportunities to integrate the value chain through VAP based industries are high.
HF and Jersey Crossbred Cows arepopular in the district. Graded buffaloeslike Murrah are also reared in largenumbers. Poultry and goat rearing isextensive in the district. Sheep rearing ispredominant in Sira taluk. Piggery is alsocatching up in the district.
Availability of tanks and reservoirsmakes the region quite suitable forinland fishing, especially in theornamental fish segment. Theincreasing domestic demand for fishcan be leveraged by development oforganised markets and kiosks.

Physical infrastructure
• Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) is responsible for supply of electricity in Tumkur. In order to deal with the increasing population and industrialization in the area, major public investments in power generation and transmission is being introduced. In the rural level, consistent effort to enhance biogas based projects are also being made.
POWER
• There are no perennial river in the district. The minor rivers originate from watersheds and empty into the reservoirs and tanks in the district.
There are 1462 minor irrigation tanks in the district irrigating 57,132 hectares of land.
The Hemavathy project which on completion is expected to irrigate 237,000 acres of land in Tumkur districtWATER
• Tumkur has 3897 primary schools, 569 High schools & 132 Pre-university colleges.
• In higher education segment, the district has 69 general colleges, 1 medical college, 6 engineering colleges, 10 ITIs, 1 dental college, 2 law colleges and 1 polytechnic.
EDUCATION
• Tumkur has close to 75 primary health centres along with 10 major hospitals.
• Dispensaries and drug shops are also available in plenty in the district.
• The district has been a centre for various healthcare initiatives at Government level like Tuberculosis control programme, polio immunization programme, etc.
