Located in northeastern Oklahoma’s “Green Country” is the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma. With nearly 400,000 residents, the city prides itself on combining the amenities of a big city with the personal connections of a small town. Known as one of “America’s Most Livable Communities,” Tulsa boasts a diversified business base, rich arts and cultural legacy, and a temperate climate.

The city had previously worked with Buxton to choose a location for the successful Tulsa Hills shopping district, so when the city decided to take an even more focused approach to retail recruitment and development, they knew exactly who to call.

AN EASY DECISION

Tulsa was impressed by Buxton’s web-based SCOUT platform, which gave the city a convenient and efficient way to run reports and find answers to their retail development questions. When answering daily calls from developers and residents requesting specific retailers in certain locations, the city simply runs SCOUT reports to see customer profiles and household concentrations to determine whether or not the endeavor would be successful.

Tulsa also uses SCOUT to run retail match reports to show potential new retailers, and credits Buxton with helping them to be more proactive in reaching out the development community.

SCOUTING ANSWERS “It’s really been beneficial to be able to reach out to the public and show that the City is actively trying to recruit retail and help the development community.”

Tulsa has also used SCOUT for a variety of projects outside of retail. When applying for a Brownfields Program grant, which is designed to clean up and redevelop abandoned or underused industrial areas, Tulsa used SCOUT to pull census numbers and medical reports showing the health problems occurring in the area. The data provided the evidence the city needed to successfully win a grant for the project.

Additionally, Tulsa has used Buxton to track factors such as the aging of their population, trends in population size, and public park usage. The City Council regularly requests special reports and presentations using Buxton’s data, which can quickly be pulled through the SCOUT platform.
