Tullie House and Prism Arts are excited to be working together on aninter-generational project inspired by the life and work of Cumbrianartist Percy Kelly. Children from Distington Community School arecreating a performance devised from illustrated letters by the CreativeArts and Conversations Group.

This spectacular exhibition showcasing over100 of Percy Kelly’s works continues into theNew Year. Visitors have called it ‘the mostabsorbing exhibition I have seen for a verylong time’ and ‘excellent and wonderful tosee.’ The exhibition is specially curated byChris Wadsworth, the leading expert on thelife and work of Percy Kelly.

Our juvenile Fin Whale skeleton, Driggsby, willbe on display for the first time. Be amazed bythis huge 12 metre (39 feet) long addition to theAtrium, best seen from the Border Galleries.Explore Driggsby’s fascinating story from thestirring discovery in 2014 on the West Coast ofCumbria, to the final mounting and installation. The exhibit will beaccompanied by a display investigating how Driggsby is related to youand me, which will feature the skull of a Minke whale and a skull castof the extinct whale, Dorudon, which lived 40 million years ago.

Riches of China: Splendour, Status and Symbolism

Inspired by traditional Chinese crafts, art formsand artefacts, we are working with Prism ArtsStudio Arts Group on the creation of aninstallation to complement the China exhibition.

Artists and participants from Prism Arts will be co-delivering creative workshops in theCommunity Room on Saturday 24th Februaryand Monday 5th March.

China: Through Our Eyes

A major new exhibition introducing and exploring the fascinatinghistory and stunning art of China. Costume and embroidery from theEmperor’s court, alongside pottery, jade and artefacts from the Shangto Qing dynasties and beyond will bring the splendour of ImperialChina to Carlisle.International loans will be shown outside of China for the first time, supplemented by objects on loan from UK organisations and Tullie House’s own Chinese collection.Discover the role of warriors and scholars in the Emperor’s court,explore the rich symbolism of Chinese art and learn about the ancient Silk Road that linked China to the West for thousands of years, bringing Chinese goods to Carlisle and taking ideas and tastes from Britain back to the producing centres of China.Admission charges apply. We will be keeping the exhibition open late once a month for a chanceto experience the Riches of China out of hours. Late opening will befollowed by our monthly China Café, a chance to learn more aboutChinese culture.

Haltwhistle Film Project has worked across Cumbria and the North-East for 20 years making films and animations with people as young as 3 and as old as 104.

They run a mobile cinema, learning disability film company FilmAbleand have made films for many organisations including the NHS and RSPB.

Come and hear some of their stories about pirates in biplanes, flutes made from sticks, animations of sea monsters and find out how they tackle important subjects.

Back by popular demand is our fantastic Nature Explorers’ Weekend.Join us for another fun-filled weekend exploring what makes Cumbria’s nature so exciting. We’ll also have Cumbria Wildlife Trust,Natural England, Carlisle Natural History Society, Eden Rivers Trust,Solway Coast AONB and Cumberland Geological Society as well ascolleagues from Manchester Museum and Keswick Museum runninghands-on activities suitable for children of all ages.

There will also be some amazing creatures for you to meet and we’llbe once again joined by the world-famous Professor Pumpernickel andhis spectacular science show!

Our friendly and engaging toddler sessions run fortnightly on aWednesday. Our drop-in sessions are for children up to 5 years old,they have a relaxed atmosphere and always involve a range of activities,including crafts and sensory play and toddler suitable toys and games.
