Rescuing the girls of Korogocho

Pauline Wanjikus life has significantly changed since she joinedthe TULIP family. Born in 1985, Pauline has lived much of her life in

Korogocho's Highridge village. The last born of 4 children, she wasraised by her mother and only came to know her father in the year2000. Her mother (presently a born again Christian) was jailed in1993 for 3 years, in the course of which Pauline dropped out ofschool and did house chores for relatives.Pauline has experienced first hand the physical danger of living inKorogocho. She specifically recalls an incident in which sheescaped rape by a whisker. Once as I had to buy groceries lateand15 boys abducted me, she narrates. They took me to the riverside to rape me, but as they tried to undress me an elderly manappeared and scared them off with his stick. Pauline attributes herclose call to God's grace. TULIP exists to mentor girls like Paulineand provide avenues for nurturing their dreams, talents andpotential.

church involvement.

TULIP is registered as a Non GovernmentalOrganization serving to empower teenage girls fromthe poverty stricken slums of Nairobi. The Ministrystarted as a social justice initiative of Nairobi Chapelin the year 2002 and it is located in Korogocho slum.The name Korogocho is synonymous with the word'chaos', which aptly defines the lives of many youngpeople who reside in one of Nairobi's largest informalsettlements (slums). Due to abject poverty(household heads earn less than one dollar a day)Korogocho like any other slum has beencharacterized by disorder in the form of drug abuse,alcoholism (chang'aa), prostitution, violence, childlabor, racketeering as residents struggle for

survival.Amidst all these, the girl child is at a higherrisk, given the socio-cultural tendency to deny herequal access to education and resources.
