April 25th was Good Shepherd Sunday and I thought of how fitting it was that our 2nd graders received their First Holy Communion on this day. There are so many stories of how Jesus is our shepherd; the one who would die to protect us, the one who loves us unconditionally, and the one who always welcomes us back when we stray. The Eucharist is the perfect way for us to be one with our shepherd, Jesus, and it was beautiful to see our 2nd graders receive it for the first time. As an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist at school masses, I am often moved to tears to see the reverence our children show when they approach me, whether it be with outstretched arms and hands shaped like a throne for Jesus or crossing their arms over their hearts to ask for a blessing. There is such sweetness and innocence on a child’s face when they receive the Eucharist. Tomorrow, our 2nd graders will get to attend Mass as a class with their 8th grade buddies. The bond created between these two classes is a tight one, and I know that tomorrow will be a special day for them all. Please join me in praying for our 2nd graders and our 8th graders as they enter new phases of their young lives; may they always remember that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, will never abandon them.

BASEBALL: Baseball season is coming to an end, but we have one more opportunity for you to come out and watch our tigers

play. This week, they will be playing against a super tough team called Parents. That’s right, the 7th grade team will take on their

parents tonight at 5:30 p.m. on the Sacred Heart Baseball Field and the 3rd grade team will play against their parents tomorrow

night at 5:30 pm. also on the Sacred Heart Baseball Field. We hope you can join us for this fun event!

THIRD GRADE PLAY: This Thursday, the 3rd grade will perform the musical “Fish Tales”. Parents and siblings of 3rd grade stu-

dents are invited to attend. Everyone else is welcome to watch live on Facebook.

REMINDER: The last day to bring in non-perishable food items to vote on the lip sync battle is this Friday.

VOLLEYBALL PICTURES: Volleyball team pictures will be taken Tuesday, May 4 at 8 a.m. in the gym. Volleyball players should

come to school dressed in their volleyball uniform, but bring their school uniform to change into after pictures. You will receive a

No Switch Tasking at the Table!!

Before the term switch tasking was popular, I had a rule that there would be no phones at the dinner table. In fact, the

kitchen at our house was a “phone free zone.” We had a basket on the coffee bar where phones lived during dinner. I knew

that having a phone at dinner meant attention diverted away from family time and I just would not have it. Like most families

with three active kids playing sports and other activities, family time was precious. We frequently had one of the kids’ friends

over for dinner. It was my child’s responsibility to tell the friend to turn off the phone and put it in the basket. Many confused

and bewildered friends of my children dutifully put their phone in the basket on their first meal with us. On their subsequent

visits, not one of them had to be told to put their phone in the basket. This is about the time you ask me why. What happened

was something magical. Everything was geared toward the outcome of being present and enjoying each other’s company.

Of course, we were asking about each other’s day, laughing, joking, and of course eating. No matter how grumpy you were

when you came to the table, you were happy when you left. Ah ha! We were still multitasking in the respect that we were

doing more than one thing at the table and indeed we were.

What about multitasking?

We pride ourselves in multitasking. How can we blame our children for wanting to do the same? The real question is are

any of us really multitasking? When most people refer to multitasking, they are really talking about switch tasking. What is

the difference?

Multitasking is doing multiple tasks at once, but they are related to the same outcome. Take my story about the

dinner table as an example. The phrase “but they’re related to the same outcome” is a crucial part to the definition. In

computer terms, multitasking is the concurrent operation by one central processing unit of two or more processes. This is

not accomplished because computers can perform multiple processes at once. They simply give the appearance of

multitasking because they can switch between processes thousands of times a second.

Multitasking applied to human beings is not much different. We have a central processing unit – the brain – and give the

illusion of multitasking by switching between tasks performed in the same time frame, but not at the same time. I am not

proposing that people cannot multitask. We can, but only when the tasks performed are simple and familiar. The reality is

that usually at least one of the tasks being performed is complex or unfamiliar. In these situations, we are not

multitasking, we are switch-tasking.

It is also playing a big part in the mastering of the skill that most people seem to disregard. Try this exercise. Get a blank

sheet of paper and put it beside this article. As you continue reading, write your name in cursive on the blank sheet. You

were probably successful at multitasking and signed your name although it probably does not look as good as usual. In this

case, both tasks, reading and signing your name, were simple and familiar tasks that you perform frequently. Now, without

looking at what you are writing, continue reading and write “I am an effective multitasker” in cursive. How does that look? In

this case, reading remained a simple and familiar task while writing the phrase was simple and unfamiliar.

Understanding the Difference: Driving and Schoolwork

Understanding the difference between switch-tasking and multitasking is important to many situations. In Louisiana, texting

and driving is not permitted. The problem is that there is no such thing as texting and driving. There is texting instead of

driving. You stop driving and start texting, which is not multitasking – it is switch-tasking. The problem is that when you

stop driving your vehicle, it keeps going.

Studying works the same way. This weekend, I walked into my daughter Amanda Grace ‘s room to ask her a question. She

was watching a movie while studying for calculus! “I don’t know how you can effectively study while watching a movie,” I

say. “Oh mom, I have to, so I am not distracted,” she says. Since this story is at the bottom of my article, it is probably a lot

funnier and more disturbing than if it was at the top. The moral of the story is “your brain can’t do both.” Unlearning this

behavior is a lot harder than you think. Start by only doing one thing at a time for a few minutes a day.
