Social player honored by Goodwill Committee

On the first Monday of every NABC, the Aileen Osofsky Goodwill Committee meets to celebrate progress in promoting friendliness at the bridge table and to recognize ACBL members who contribute to the effort.

At each NABC, it is customary for director of the host district to select a member of the district to recognize for significant contributions to the game, particularly in the area of goodwill. At this tournament, District 9 Director Jay Whipple made the choice.

He selected Maggy Simony, who made a name for herself late in life by publishing book about social bridge, with a strong emphasis on the fun aspect of the game.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSDo’s and Don’ts to help

your game – Part 5By Brent Manley

DOGive count

to keep declarer from running a long suit. Here’s the situation: The opponents have bid to 3NT (your left-hand opponent opened 1NT) and partner, bless him, gets off to a heart lead. Dummy ♠ 8 7 6 ♥ A 2 ♦ J 6 5 ♣ K Q J 10 9 You ♠ Q 5 3 ♥ K 7 6 4 ♦ Q 9 7 ♣ 7 6 2

Partner’s brilliant lead essentially takes out the only sure entry to dummy. Declarer plays low, hoping your partner has led away from the ♥K, but you win and return a heart. Declarer’s next move is to play the ♣K. Now what?

The card you play to this trick could be the difference between beating the contract and letting it make. You must play the ♣2. Partner surely has the ♣A. If declarer had that card, he probably would have claimed by now.

Partner is relying on you to give count with the card you play. If you and your partner have not discussed this defensive agreement, I encourage you to do so before your next session together.

To indicate an even number of cards, play a high one and follow with a low one, e.g., the 8 from 8-7-5-4. If you have an odd number of cards, play low-high, e.g., the 2 from 6-5-2.

When you follow with the ♣2, partner –

holding ♣A 8 4 – will know you have an odd number of cards, i.e., one or three. If you have just one, declarer will have four and will be able to knock out partner’s ace while retaining a club to get to dummy.

If you have three clubs, declarer has only two, so partner must hold up just once. Ducking a second time would give declarer two club tricks, which might be enough for him to make his contract.

It is vital for you and your partner to be on the same page in situations like this. I urge you to discuss this thoroughly with your partner.

DON’TGive count without some reason to do so.

Some partnerships agree to give count as defenders from the first trick to the last. This is losing strategy. If you are a known count-giver, declarer will pick up all kinds of tricks, finessing left and right as you aid him in figuring out the distribution of your hand and partner’s.

Apart from trying to strand a long suit in dummy, there are times when it’s important to give count. For example, if declarer in a suit contract has a strong side suit and is, say, pulling trumps, it could be useful for the player “behind” that strong suit to give count so that when declarer leads that suit, partner might be able to read declarer’s card as a singleton and take his ace rather than ducking and losing your side’s only trick in that suit.

Take all your chances, No. 5

By Eddie Kantar

Dlr: South ♠ K 10 2 Vul: Both ♥ A 6 3 ♦ A K 10 ♣ Q J 7 6

♠ A Q J 9 8 5 ♥ 5 4 2 ♦ J 4 3 ♣ 8

You open 2♠, weak, in first seat. West passes, partner bids 4♠, everyone passes and West leads the ♣10 to dummy’s jack, East’s king and your 8. East makes the expected shift to the ♥Q. Plan the play. Both opponents follow to the first round of spades.

Solution The idea on this one is to appreciate the value

of your lower club spot cards once the 10, jack and the king are out of play. At this point, the two highest remaining clubs in the opponents’ hands are the ace and 9 and your side remains with the Q-7-6. What does it all mean? Watch. Notice you have four possible losers, two hearts, a club and a

diamond. Win the ♥A, draw as many trump as necessary,

ending in dummy, and lead the ♣Q, which will be covered by the ace (or else you will discard a heart and have 10 tricks). Say it is covered and you ruff. Now cross to a high diamond and lead the ♣7, intending to discard a heart if it is not covered. If East has the ♣9 and covers, you ruff, cross to dummy with a diamond and discard a red-suit loser on the ♣6. If West has the ♣9, he will win the trick, be able to cash one heart (all you have left) and your possible diamond loser vanishes on the ♣6, no diamond finesse needed. Loser on loser plays like this abound.

Florida players are flocking to the NABC: Partners Dianna Stolpmann and Sue Subin of St. Augustine FL played in yesterday’s 49er Pairs.

The full deal: ♠ K 10 2 ♥ A 6 3 ♦ A K 10 ♣ Q J 7 6 ♠ 7 6 ♠ 4 3 ♥ K 8 7 ♥ Q J 10 9 ♦ 8 7 6 2 ♦ Q 9 5 ♣ 10 9 5 3 ♣ A K 4 2 ♠ A Q J 9 8 5 ♥ 5 4 2 ♦ J 4 3 ♣ 8

Second in the Super Senior Pairs: Richard DeMartino and Pat McDevitt.lead was substantial enough to hold off a late charge by runners-up Pat McDevitt of Brookline MA and Richard DeMartino of Riverside CT. McDevitt and DeMartino, who won the World Senior Pairs title in 2010, posted a 73% in the second final session.

The Super Senior Pairs, restricted to players 70 and older, is the second NABC title for the Schulte-Kniest partnership. They won the NABC Fast Open Pairs in 2012.

Goodwill

the game over a long period. “He has given,” said DeMartino, “without thought of reward.”

Also honored at the meeting was Eldon Clayman, 2017 Goodwill Member of the Year. The formal presentation of the honor will take place at the Spring NABC in Kansas City MO next year.

Clayman, of Valdese NC, is a transplant from Michigan who has been working for bridge in a variety of capacities for more than a quarter century. He has served as Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference president and vice president and as president and treasurer of Unit 244.

Goodwill Chair Sandy DeMartino said the nomination form for Clayman noted that “he always put people first, is a tireless worker and is constantly looking for ways to improve the players’ bridge experience.”

Also recognized at the meeting were new members of the committee, notably ACBL staff members: TDs Nancy Boyd, Tom Marsh and Brian Russell, plus Meeting Planner Wendy Sullivan and Carol Robertson, manager of Club and Member Services at ACBL.

ACBL President Ken Monzingo addressed the group and thanked the committee members for what they do to promote a friendly atmosphere at bridge tournaments. “You are the ACBL,” he said. “You are our face. What the players see in your face hopefully is what they will see of us as a whole.” Monzingo said that, except for the births of his children, being ACBL President this year “has been the highlight of my life.”

DeMartino thanked Canadians Richard and Janice Anderson for their contributions to bridge and the ACBL, and she did the same for Dan Morse, who has represented District 16 on the ACBL board for decades. He is leaving the board at the end of the year.

DeMartino concluded the meeting by recalling the quote from Osofsky about spreading goodwill: “It is nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.”

Aileen Osfosky Goodwill Chair Sandy DeMartino.

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal a

director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what is wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Renew onlineDue to new laws that prevent ACBL staff from

manually recording credit card information, we ask that members who wishes to renew or reinstate their memberships using a credit card to do so online at www.acbl.org/join.

The 2015 winners of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs were John Hurd and Joe Grue.

Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs

The eventThe Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs ranks with

the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs in the summer and the Platinum Pairs in the spring as the most prestigious — and toughest — pair events on the ACBL calendar. Like the LM Pairs and Platinum Pairs, the Blue Ribbon Pairs is played over three days and includes two qualifying, two semifinal and two final sessions.

Entry is restricted to winners and runners-up in regional championships — plus high finishers in North American championships, members of current Grand National district championship teams, members of current official teams representing ACBL and the top 100 lifetime masterpoint holders.

The Blue Ribbon Pairs was renamed the Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1999 to honor one of bridge’s all-time great players, writers, administrators and the authority on the laws of the game.

Kaplan (1925–1997) won his first North American championship in 1953 – the Vanderbilt – and his last in 1997 – the Open Swiss Teams at the Spring NABC in Dallas.

Kaplan was recognized as the world’s foremost authority on the laws of duplicate and rubber bridge. He became co-chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission in 1978 and was co-chairman of the WBF Laws Commission at the time of his death.

He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1993. In 1995 he was inducted into the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame and the WBF Hall of Fame.

The trophyThe event is contested for the Cavendish Trophy,

awarded for the National Open Pair Championship and donated by the Cavendish Club of New York in 1928. Since 1963, the trophy has honored the winners of the Blue Ribbon Pairs.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Stop!Using the Stop card during the auction requests

the next bidder to pause 10 seconds after a jump in the bidding. TD Matt Koltnow explains that using the Stop card is optional, and that while the procedure is included in the regulations and is not a law, employing the Stop card helps players comply with Law 73D: “It is desirable for players to maintain steady tempo and unvarying manner.”

The purpose of the Stop card is two-fold:1. It helps the opponents avoid transmitting

Unauthorized Information by acting too slowly or too quickly.

2. It helps all four players “play bridge” by looking at the auction rather than reading meanings into fast bids and hesitations.

Players who employ the Stop card must consistently use it in all jump-bid situations, lest the inconsistency be interpreted as information. For example, a consistent Stop card user must employ it preceding 3NT in an auction such as 1NT–(Pass)–3NT, and the next bidder should still pause and look at their cards before making a call.

“Taking time, even in an easy auction, allows you to use that same 10 seconds that you’re legally entitled to after any skip bid,” says Koltnow.

Like the Alert card, the Stop card is used for the benefit of the opponents, not partner. Koltnow says that more experienced players are expected to take time after a jump in the bidding whether or not a Stop card is used.

Youth and Junior entriesCoupons will be made available for junior

members in good standing for entry into events at NABCs:

Any player under the age of 26 years who is a full-time student (must provide proof of eligibility) will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any event. These coupons will have a value of $10 per session.

Any player under the age of 21 years will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any event.

These coupons will have a value of $10 per session.

Any player 19 years and under will be granted free plays for each session of regionally rated events.

Players under the age of 26 years

named to teams to represent Zone 2 NBOs in world competitions for NABCs occurring between the time they are named to the team and the world championship will receive free plays at NABCs when playing with members of their team or members of another team representing a Zone 2 NBO.

Richard Popper of Wilmington DE was elected chairman of the ACBL Board of Governors at its meeting on Sunday. Popper’s two-year term begins Jan. 1.

The 2015 Whitehead Women’s Pairs champs were Emily Harrell and Benedicte Cronier.

Women’s Pairs compete for Whitehead Trophy

Play begins today in the Whitehead Women’s Pairs with two qualifying sessions, followed by two final sessions tomorrow.

This is the 79th Women’s Pairs. At stake is the Whitehead Trophy, donated in 1930 by Wilbur C. Whitehead of New York, a great bridge authority and a member of the team that won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1928, the first year it was in play.

Whitehead (1866–1931) was president of the Simplex Automobile Company, but bridge held such a fascination for him that he retired from business in 1910 to devote his life to bridge.

He was the inventor of many bidding and play conventions, the quick-trick table of card values, the Whitehead system of requirements for original bids and responses and the Whitehead table of preferential leads.

Whitehead was instrumental in standardizing procedures in auction bridge and later in contract bridge.

This event was for many years played at the Spring NABC until moving to the fall last year.

In a matchpoint event, we are always looking for that extra trick or playing in a risky major suit or notrump rather than a poorer-scoring, but safer, minor suit. Why? Because it pays off big time when it works.

We may even risk our contract to make a play for an overtrick. On defense we strive not to blow a trick rather than beat a contract.

In IMP scoring, however, the considerations change drastically. Now just making or beating a contract can give us a big score, but extra tricks are chump change. (OK, I know we have all won or lost a match by 1 IMP.)

Winning IMP strategies include:Make your contract. Do not worry about

overtricks or undertricks. If you are in the right spot, things will usually work out in your favor.

Trust your bidding system. Even at pairs, you will be a winner if you are in the right suit at the right level despite blowing an overtrick once in a while.

Stretch to bid a game. If vulnerable, game should be bid even if it is as a low as a 40% chance. If not vulnerable, it should be a 50% prospect.

If you bid three vulnerable games that your opponents do not bid and you make only one of them, you break even. If you are in an auction and the decision is now in your hands whether to bid game or not --- if you have to think about it, bid game.

Do not double their partial. You better have them down two in your own hand before you chance a double of a bid below game. And ‘down two in your own hand’ means you have a fistful of trump tricks. Do not count on your partner for many of these tricks.

Do not go for numbers. Don’t make some wild,

preemptive bid just because you have six or seven (or more) cards in one suit. It is not worth it.

Your competitive bidding should be more constructive at IMP scoring. Upgrade your overcalls by at least a queen. This means that if you would overcall with 8 points at pairs, overcall with 10 or more at IMPs.

Play your safest contract. If in the bidding your find you have a better fit in a minor than a major, play in the minor, especially at a partial. You want to make whatever contract you bid. Plus 110 is only a bit worse than plus 140 and it may not even make any difference sometimes.

This also applies to game and slam bidding. If partner opens 1NT and you have a four-card major with at least invitational values, bid Stayman. Plus 620 and plus 630 are the same at IMPs.

Do not stretch to bid slams. Bid slams only when they have at least 75% probability of success.

Do not stretch to bid slams. Oh, is this a repeat? Well, good. The point needs extra emphasis.

You have partners at the other table. Don’t make a risky bid or play because you think you are down in a match.

Once, in a seven-board match, we bid a slam down two vulnerable for minus 200, bid 3NT with a combined 21 high-card points after a bidding misunderstanding --- which my partner played well for down one and minus 100 --- and doubled them in 4♥, making five for minus 990. We thought we were slaughtered. Wrong. We won IMPs on all three boards and blitzed the other team.

Don’t be a hero. Do not make a confusing bid that (1) may be passed when it is forcing or (2) shows extra values that you don’t have. Make the call that

shows your strength.Take out insurance. In every team game, there

will be a hand where both sides can make game. Usually it is a wild hand with lots of distribution, doubles fits and long suits. It is usually right to bid one more – unless you are sure they are going down and you cannot make your bid.

On defense, strive at all costs to beat the contract when when it means giving up an overtrick. You may take risks that you would never dream of at matchpoints – such as leading the king from K-x, hoping to find your partner with the ace of that suit or the queen and a quick entry in trumps. Sometimes you give up an overtrick, so you lose 1 IMP. If your bold play sets a contract just one time in 10, you are ahead.

If it’s hard for you, it’s hard for them. The player sitting in your seat at the other table is holding the same cards you are. This guiding principle will help you on several of the points already listed.

IMP Strategy (for Swiss teams, knockout teams and IMP pairs)By Steven Gaynor

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

The Past Comes AliveDutch players Frank van Wezel and Hans van

de Konijnenberg collect books, magazines and Daily Bulletins about bridge. They especially enjoy reading Daily Bulletins from the pre-Internet era B these periodicals are a treasure trove of wonderful photographs, marvelous sketches, splendid deals and tremendous stories and anecdotes.

Van Wezel and van de Konijnenberg decided that this material should be at the disposal of all bridge players. At the same time, they want to save the history of bridge from oblivion. Therefore they launched a free website: www.bridgedailybulletins.nl

On this site you may find thousands of bulletins, both from the digital era and before. WBF, EBL and ACBL championship bulletins are posted, as well as many from miscellaneous tournaments around the world.

If you have bulletins that they are missing, please contact them. Contact details can be found on the website.

Runners-up in the Mitchell Open Board-a-Match teams: David Gold, Boye Brogeland, David Bakhshi, Daniel Korbel, Richard Schwartz and Espen Lindqvist.

Easy does itEd Schulte and Tom Kniest won the Super Senior

Pairs Monday night, and on this deal from the first final session, Schulte found the best contract by resisting the temptation to jump to the “obvious” spot:

With both sides vulnerable, Schulte picked up: ♠A K Q J 6 4 3 2 ♥Q 8 4 3 ♦10 ♣ —

Dealer, on his left, opened 1♣. Partner Kniest overcalled 1♦, and RHO passed. Many of the players holding Schulte’s cards either blasted to 4♠ directly or bid 1*S followed by jumping to 4♠ on the next round. Schulte decided instead to cuebid 2♣ first to find out more about his partner’s hand.

LHO bid 3♣, and Kniest bid 3♥. Whether this was intended as heart length as a chunky fragment, it didn’t matter to Schulte who nextn jumped to 6♠ after RHO passed. His wait-and-see approach – and Kniest’s nice 3♥ call – was rewarded when this was the full layout: ♠ 7 ♥ A 10 5 ♦ A Q J 6 4 3 2 ♣ 5 4 ♠ 9 ♠ 10 8 5 ♥ K J 9 ♥ 7 6 2 ♦ K 7 ♦ 9 8 5 ♣ A J 10 8 7 6 3 ♣ K Q 9 2 ♠ A K Q J 6 4 3 2 ♥ Q 8 4 3 ♦ 10 ♣ —

Declarer ruffed the opening club lead, drew trumps and took the diamond finesse. When the ♦A dropped the ♦K, Schulte had all the tricks.

Every other declarer had 13 tricks in spades, too, but most of them scored just plus 710. Plus 1460 was a tie for top, earning Schulte and Kniest 26.5 out of 27 matchpoints.

You’re invited to Italy Over the past couple of years, European Bridge

League President Yves Aubrey has become a semi-regular visitor to the U.S., mostly to cities where NABCs are organized.

He was in Orlando for about five days with several goals in mind.

First, he wanted to make contact with ACBL executives in person to continue improving relations between the two largest bridge organizations in the world. Between them, the ACBL and EBL represent more than 85% of the world’s tournament players.

Aubrey also discussed possible joint efforts regarding cheating, an issue that has touched both organizations over the past couple of years. “The EBL is very pragmatic,” Aubrey said. “We are trying to be involved with the fight against cheating.”

Then there is the invitation he extended to bridge players throughout the U.S. – to attend the 8th Open European Championships scheduled for June 10-24 in Montecatini, Italy. The city of 21,095 is about 28 miles from Pisa and 31 miles from Firenze (Florence). Players interested in attending the tournament would fly into either of those cities. Aubrey said there will be shuttles from the airports to Montecatini.

The city is located in Tuscany, where the weather is mild during the summer, featuring high temperatures in the mid-70s. Tuscany is known for its landscapes, traditions, history, artistic legacy and its influence on high culture. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and has been home to many figures influential in the history of art and science, and contains well-known museums such as the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace.

Aubrey said the EBL will arrange special rates in many hotels of Montecatini Terme available through a travel agency (Ranieri Tour Operator at [email protected]). He said all the hotels are within easy walking distance of the two tournament venues: the Palazzo dei Congresso and Teatro Verdi. “You can go everywhere on foot,” he said.

The tournament schedule features Mixed Teams, Mixed Pairs for the first four days, followed by Open, Women’s and Senior pairs and teams for the rest of the tournament. In the two-day events, players who do not make the first cut will have games available to them.

The tournament is open to any player who is a member in good standing of his own bridge federation.

Once the long events begin, pairs who don’t make the cut in one event can drop into a concurrent event – for example, from the Open Teams to the Open Pairs.

Aubrey said bridge play will end each day between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. All events will be limited to 50 deals per day.

The EBL president said the tournament is continuation of the inaugural open championship in 2003, when the first was organized in Menton, France. U.S. players won two events at that tournament and have done well at others. “There are many Americans who are now European champions,” Aubrey said. The championships take place in odd-numbered years.
